“BLISTERING SPEED!! // The VITAL Role of the TRAIL ARM!”

In this video, I delve into the crucial techniques for optimizing speed and ball contact by mastering the *TRAIL ARM* movement in the golf swing.
1. *TRAIL WRIST* hinges towards **TRAIL FOREARM**, setting the club on plane and leveraging the golf club.
2. The *TRAIL FOREARM* folds towards **TRAIL BICEP**, creating good arm structure early in the backswing.
3. As the swing progresses, the *TRAIL UPPER ARM* elevates the club from the rib cage to above the **TRAIL SHOULDER**.
In the DOWNSWING, the opposite actions occur:
1. Unpacking the *UPPER ARM* towards the rib cage reconnects the trail arm to the body, shallowing the path.
2. Similarly, unpacking the *LOWER ARM* creates width, allowing the club to fall out instead of spinning the body and hanging onto it.
3. Unpack the “TRAIL WRIST” by allowing the butt end of the club to work towards you as the club had works out towards the ball. The trail wrist simply unhinges and rotates towards and through the ball!

I used to hit my 8i 155 yds with all arms swing that was very disconnected to my body. This past year, I worked hard on shortening my backswing, focusing a lot on body rotation, but lost some distance, probably club and half. This drill got me back my distance and then some. Now I'm carrying my 8i 165yds with traditional lofts! Gotta let your arms and hands relax and let it drop to create speed! Thanks andrew!

That’s awesome to hear! The arms swing and the body rotates. Once you marry these essential ingredients you create more speed with less effort. Great job! Best, Coach A. 🏌️‍♂️⛳️🙏🏻

Andrew Emery, Mike Malaska and Chuck Quinton are all now teaching somewhat similar patterns. They advocate getting the arms and hands working EARLY in the downswing. The body reacts to the arm swing, rather than the other way around. The body still turns, but it doesn’t overturn or spin out. For me, focusing in the trail arm and wrists works much better. The club comes down on plane and the over the top move is gone. It’s true that good players can start by opening up the lower body while keeping the shoulders closed and the club shallow. But this type of separation move in the early downswing is a very athletic move and very difficult to master. Thanks, Andrew. Great video and excellent teaching!

You are such a great instructor Andrew. I've gotten to the point of playing pretty decent consistent golf because of many hours of RU-vid instruction videos (with your channel at the top my list). Still, your "elevate" point towards the end of the backswing really resonated with me. I can see now how I was swinging a little too "compact". I didn't need to make a big change, but allowing more elevation really does seem to be releasing more freewheeling clubhead speed! Granted all I've done so far is get off my exercise bike while watching your video to test this on the carpet in my office with my 7 iron : -), but if feels great! Looking forward to taking it to the course. Okay, now back to the exercise bike to watch the rest of your video.

Makes so much sense, especially for me as a senior golfer who has a bit of difficulty rotating as fast as some teachers want me to do. I’ve always thought the arms, hands in combination with rotation is where power comes from. Anything else natural we do in life works the same.

Andrew, I always look forward to your videos coming out on the weekend. This one does not fail to disappoint. I did notice that when I was really working on firing that right arm I was initially hitting lots of fat shots for some unknown to me reason. However, I was really working on keeping that back to the target feeling as I am shifting left and firing the arms down and I was really surprised at how good ball contact felt. The swing looked good on video as well as I was getting my hands more in front of my right thigh at P6. I look forward to actually getting out on the range and seeing how my distance is affected. One question I have is I do notice on some swings my path is well inside out. I can see a hook developing. Any ways to combat that? Anyways, keep up the good work. Your videos, I believe, have to be helping out the golfer looking to improve their games and hit the ball farther.
@AndrewEmeryGolf
@AndrewEmeryGolf 4 месяца назад
It’s hard to say without seeing your swing but somewhere in your swing the club face is too closed. Generally that forces the golfer to swing inside out to avoid the left miss which makes things worse over time! It could be something as simple as weakening your grip. It could be an early release!? But without seeing the swing I’m like a ship without a rudder!! Don’t want to miss-advise you! If you have any interest in online coaching then shoot me an email. I’m confident it would help you springboard into golf season! ⬇️⬇️ www.andrewemerygolf.com/contact Best, Andrew ⛳️🏌️‍♂️🙏🏻

5 Stars. This tip makes my swing feel effortless with more speed and I finally have an unforced release. Was trying to keep my Right arm bent too long to create lag but that was inconsistent and backfired. Currently 16HC but have had many rounds with 3-4 over for a front or back nine. I can see how this can make these much more achievable for 18 for 2024 and lower the HC.

Amazing lesson Andrew!! Funny sometimes that when the student is ready, the teacher appears. I feel that this is exactly what I need to do. I’ve been trying to figure out why an old guy at my club hits it an absolute mile with hardly any body turn and a bad back. He starts cocking his wrist’s very early and doesn’t look to have much width. Now I know how he does it :) I make a pretty swing that usually goes very straight but not very far. All body and passive arms.

To my fellow golfers: Please understand what Andrew is showing you. I use to hit the ball more body-centric than arms and wrists. I had an 8 iron that would go 140 on a good hit...which was inconsistent. Now I'm hitting my 8 iron between 160 and 170 with ease. This was the missing link. The wrist is where the majority of your swing speed comes from. The L to L drill is a great drill for this. It took me years to figure this out. Work at this and you will be rewarded. I wish I had a time machine and could tell my younger self to stop with the other drills. Also, what the winning lottery numbers are, invest in bitcoin ....but I digress. Good luck to all.

85 percent of golfers always turn body ahead of arms as was described , the key is holding your back to the target longer and start arms down while disciplining your lower body not to jump and instead stay squared and behind shot. Exactly what I was thinking. There I was trying to be a little more rotational like Milo Lines which hurt my back, so I moved to another instruction, which said I should keep the arms and hands "quiet" in the transition, almost like you leaving them up there. That ended up being good at times but was an inconsistent feel for me. I like to feel my arms and hands control the swing, so maybe this method is best for me, so I will give it a try, although, hitting with arms usually leads to hooks with the woods. Coach Andrew, when you get to the top, what is the single most important thought to start down? Its impossible to have more than one thought, the swing is too quick. Golf is hard man!
@topgunbass
@topgunbass 4 месяца назад
@wayneharvett6170 I think you have to practice timing the release. If you are hooking you are probably tuning over to much. You are right, it's not easy.

You have to find what work best for you!! This isn’t my method but it works for the vast majority of golfers. I have elite golfers I coach that understand how to use their hands and arms and need to get more open but that type of thought process for golfers that slice or struggle with speed is problematic in my opinion!! Best, Coach A. ⛳️🏌️‍♂️🙏🏻
@AndrewEmeryGolf
@AndrewEmeryGolf 4 месяца назад
Milo is an excellent Coach!! And, an even more formidable athlete!! His swing is more Dynamic than a lot of tour players in my opinion. It’s an anti-hook move which is beneficial for high speed golfers who struggle to control the club face!! He isn’t wrong in his interpretation but I believe it’s problematic for golfers that struggle with mobility and speed. The biggest ‘one’ thing I would say is keeping your back to the target as you transition. That single feel has helped literally thousands of my students with their path and release patterns. I would encourage both of you to consider an online lesson. Sometimes a little nudge in the right direction is all it takes to get the ball rolling. andrewemerygolf/contact Thanks for watching! @AndrewEmeryGolf

Hi Russ, the key to creating lag and forward shaft lean is width! Your ability to sequence your arm swing with your body as you pivot the club through is what this is all about. The irony is that when you feel less tension and more mobility with your arms early, you’ll be less flippy late!!! It’s one of golf’s biggest misconceptions! Faster arms for less flip! Andrew, your videos have really had a positive effect on my golf swing. The notion of linear and angular motion has been a game changer. However, I still struggle with hitting through the ball. No matter how hard I try I know I am hitting AT the ball. I know because my follow through is essentially non-existent. Can you suggest any drills to help hit THROUGH the ball? As a senior (age76) golfer, this issue has been plaguing me since I took up the game 10 years ago. Thanks for your help!

I did a video on getting the club to the Fifth Parallel which might be useful (See attached!!) You have to swing the club to your destination. Andrew great video, just wondering if you have a forward shaft lean when making contact with the ball? Is taking a divot really necessary?
@AndrewEmeryGolf
@AndrewEmeryGolf 4 месяца назад
It’s not necessary but it is preferable for optimal contact! Use a piece of painters tape or a towel and place it perpendicular to the target line about 6 inches behind the ball! Your goal is to hit down past the tape!! Get your arms moving forward as you approach impact!! You have to be linear first! Then put the ball down and do the same thing! Thanks for watching! Awesome tips but I've been struggling with pulling the club too much such that I hit the ground way behind the golf ball - when I try to pull the club down in the downswing. For the shots where the club does not hit the ground, i find my lead arm doing a massive chicken wing in a bid to avoid hitting the ground.

It could be any number of reasons from standing too close to the ball to getting to steep?! Without seeing your swing I’d be speculating. What I can say is put a a few tees in the ground and clip the head off the tees without hitting the ground for a while before putting the ball back on the tee again! wow, it's a great concept that I have to unpack, literally! First, I have to clean out that suitcase I call my brain and remove the dirty clothes from my last trip/lesson.🥴 I was on the range today, trying to understand how to get to that position high on top, but after a quiet hands takeaway, I was having trouble with the feel of step two. What should my hands be feeling specifically? ( is it only the arm that's bending and lifting into that middle position or are the fingers helping this lifting?... or are the fingers very quiet?) I may be overthinking this, (like everything else) but it seems like there are multiple stages in that second sequence. I'll have to find that feel and see what works. BTW... I love this lesson and I'm going to work on this till I get it. thank you

Hi Larry, ultimately we want some width at the top with a box formed between your rib cage and your tricep, and your forearm to your bicep!!💪. The trail wrist hinges, the trail lower arms folds, and the upper arm elevates!! It’s a good idea to do some swings right hand only, just make sure that when you stop at the top you can place your left hand on the grip!! It’s a throwing position is all!!! Above the trail shoulder. Keep it simple and try not to over think. Swing the club over your right shoulder in the backswing and then over your left shoulder in the through swing and allow you body to be employed. The arms swing as the body turns!! Hit the range Gary! Don’t make changes for the sake of changes. You have to find what works for you mate. I’m not a CFI (club focused Instructor) neither am I a method coach. The golf swing is a blend of wrist articulation, arms swing and of course body dynamics. What you need is balance between these movements for consistency! I would suggest spending some time on my channel. I have a ton of videos taking about the importance of using the arms in the swing. Thanks for your comment! Best, Coach A. 🏌️‍♂️⛳️🙏🏻

Joost, my 8i is 33.5. I make sure I drift without spinning and get my left arm OFF my chest. More Linear!!! It’s hard to say without seeing your swing or ball flight! The vast majority of golfers transition spin as they change direction! This problem is usually exacerbated with the Driver! Andrew, I have been working on this the last five days or so. A question involving the wrists. I have seen some teachers say that lag is a product of doing many things correctly in the swing and does not occur as a result of purposefully trying to hold lag. I saw a still photo of Nelly Korda about at p5.5 and, man, she has that club coming in beautifully with plenty of lag. How is she doing it? Is she purposefully holding the lag. Nothing in her swing tells me she is holding anything back. That p6 position of the hands in front of the right thigh is too me the one position in golf besides impact, of course, that, imo, separates the good golfer from the not so good. Maybe over generalizing a bit, but when looking at touring pros and the other fantastic golfers like yourself, by and large they all look very similar at p6.
@AndrewEmeryGolf
@AndrewEmeryGolf 4 месяца назад
They’re actually very often feeling the opposite of holding the angle! That’s the irony. I’ve worked with Tour players that are too narrow with too much lag which isn’t great either! They firstly create a lot more width than average golfers at the top. They also don’t have the club face wide open like so many amateurs. An open clubface paired with lag is a disaster. All elite golfers have fantastic body dynamics. They transition-glide as the club completes the backswing. Combine that with much faster arm speed in the transition and you create lag! It’s far more important in my opinion to get your club face square and keep your lead wrist somewhat flat as you approach impact than obsessing over lag!! Trying to create lag the wrong way is disastrous!! Thanks for watching! Best, Coach A. 🏌️‍♂️⛳️🙏🏻

Andrew why are they telling us to drive that right/trail elbow into the ribs?
@AndrewEmeryGolf
@AndrewEmeryGolf 4 месяца назад
I agree whole heartedly that you lower the upper arm as you change direction. It elevates in the backswing and reconnects w/the ribcage in the transition. That places the elbow in front of the trail hip! While we don’t dump our angles early in the transition it’s essential that we create width as we change direction monitoring the tension in the trail arm so that it unpacks correctly! Most amateurs get narrow/pinched early in the transition and have to unpack everything in a hurry which causes an early release! I’ve attached my “lag paradigm” video below which should help explain further! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-m6eYk0Duojg.htmlsi=V-T0mVB1c8gI5lGS Thanks for watching! Go and take lessons with a good teaching pro preferably someone who play at high level corn ferry tour or retired PGA player, you will find out very quickly that the arms are done at p2 and the body takes over, if your hips don’t pivot properly, you will never play consistent golf, Since I started 5 months ago I can now shoot either par or 2 over par, golf is not easy, put the time with a good coach and put the work at the range, or you can just be a tip that works for you today on RU-vid and start all over again next week
@AndrewEmeryGolf
@AndrewEmeryGolf 4 месяца назад
Thanks for the comment. I couldn’t agree more that golf is a hard game. And, that you should find a coach to help you improve your game! I do have to push back on the arms being done at p2. Especially when peak arm speed is just south of p 6! While I get where you’re coming from - The golf swing is a harmonious motion, wrist mechanics, kinematics and of course force production ALL play a role. Those factors vary from person to person!! In my opinion one size does NOT fit all! While there are of course similar patterns - Release patterns vary, as do kinematics and force production even at the highest level. The art of instruction is finding what works for each individual based on a lot of factors including ‘physical limitations’ which you may not have considered in your comment. - many golfers don’t have the strength or mobility to transfer energy kinematically from their feet to the club head! (I’ve seen it, and helped them!) Heck - Even Tiger has made adjustments!! Bottom line - I’m glad you’ve found what works best for YOU! Best regards, A. 🏌️‍♂️⛳️🙏🏻

But since I started to work the arms and not be as concerned about the open hips at release much easier speed gain and consistency - not forced as much. Thank You Again!!
@AndrewEmeryGolf
@AndrewEmeryGolf 4 месяца назад
Allow your arms to employ your body. I’ve never liked the thought of turning the hips. It’s a disaster that causes early extension for most. Kicking the ground with your lead foot and leg will work beautifully for most. It accommodates rotation in the pelvis which happens automatically with the proper use of ground mechanics.
