Love your vibe and your reactions! Calliope Mori is a vtuber (virtual youtuber) so that character you see is her. Kinda like Gorillaz except her avatar is animated via motion capture like a super duper Snapchat filter. Her character is a reaper (shinigami) so that's why she has a scythe and talks about taking souls, etc. She's hella talented and you might want to check out her other songs and content too. The world of vtubers is very entertaining and addicting, seriously one of the only positive things to come out of 2020 for me and many others.

Welcome to the rabbit hole. If you keep goign down, you might not find a way back up. But please, join us. This rabbit hole is one worth falling down, trust me. Also, this song was played during her debut stream. It was really cool, because you see this bumbling, insecure, charming lady playing a reaper persona... then she's just like "Um... can I show you some of my music? I hope you like it..." And then this plays. It was a helluva introduction to her music, let me tell ya.

Some other sniggets of info: She's born in USA, but lives in japan since some years ago, and was always a big fan of japanese rap music. She has many years of rapping and being an underground rapper. Most of her songs are done with the help of KokoroBeats, a mixer and touhou fan music producer than in japan has a good popularity.

also as context, her"character" is a shinigami , aka a death god and she is singing this from the persepctive of that character ,a lot of her rap is like that while mixing in some deeper meanings below the obvious death god/reaper subtext

I had to do a double take there when I saw my name, don't even remember saying anything about Calli's song here lol. Nice, past me. Anyway, welcome to what may be your slow (or violently fast) descent into the Hololive Hole. If you can react to a non-rap song I'd suggest Tokoyami Towa's cover of Error, it may be Japanese but it hits hard with the emotion, if not then Calliope's Deadbeats would be neat.

Nice reaction. Calliope is the most menacing when rapping, specially while keeping her character story of a retired grim reaper in training. And yet, she's the sweetest gal i have seen from the company's group. Looking forward to seeing you guys react to my favorite song, "Live Again", where she opens her heart to express a heartfelt thankyou to her community.

I mean technically yes but also no. She's been an underground rapper for years in Tokyo, Hololive is basically just her big break. All of her old stuff is still here on youtube, and she even still tweets using her old twitter account from time to time. It was brought up in her interview on the Trash Taste podcast and she basically said she wants people to listen to and enjoy her old music still, but to just "don't be an asshole about it" in regards to how it relates to Calliope and what she is currently doing.

Ok, ima throw this one here. I really like watching reactions of Mori, and yet i haven't seen someone react to "her" specifically aside to just her music. As in getting to know how it all works from the perspective of someone extremely new to the vtube genre. She even made an appearance on a talk show and still no one is interested further than the songs. Another couple of people teetering at the edge of the rabbit hole, from what lve read in other comments she's originally from Texas. She moved to Japan for a job and hanging around the "underground" rap scene over there before getting into Hololive back in 2020 just as everything got shutdown.

I see that this is your only Calliope Mori reaction, and she's done a LOT of stuff since this, and the vast majority is really good. On the whole, Hololive has produced some really good material. A good recommendation for another Hololive character is "Gawr Gura" and her original song "Reflect." It's very interesting listening. It combines English, Japanese, and even Greek lyrics.
