Agreed. It only took watching one of the his vids to know Marshall knows what he's talking about. I've rebuilt hundreds of Porsche transaxles but I'm new to automatic transmissions and I'm all ears...
Wow Mr. Sanders, you're a natural teacher! I'm new to transmissions but, I felt confident I could figure it out with my skill set and some good research, but now I'm sure I can do it with your help. Thanks for sharing your hard earned knowledge! Truly appreciate it! My rig has 268,000+ miles, and my TC has gotten so noisy I can't take it anymore. Was going to just replace it and see how far I could get, but figure it's silly not to bite the bullet and do it right. I'm hoping to get to 400,000+ with my trusty 7.3.
Marshall it took me an hr to get that output shaft snap ring out today. What a great tip on placing the beveled end down so the pliers can get it without slipping. THANK YOU!
I have a 1996 diesel E4OD 4X4, and im thinking about rebuilding it myself, I love the detail you have in this so far. I just would've liked to see you install the bushing also , beings thats part of the rebuild. Thank you for sharing these videos, you have my attention sir.
Yes sir ! I was only in the you-tube video game a short time at that point but determined to make good videos. I am going to talk deeply about bushings in a video it just hasn’t happened yet stay tuned and make shit happen!
I agree with everybody else who feels they can now do this job! If possible could you tell us where you purchased the new planet, kit and thrust washers that you had to replace?! Just brought home a new project that has me watching your vids on the daily! I feel like we're almost friends! Great videos sir!
Great video. Over 100,000 miles on a heavy duty rebuild, I would hope so, stock behind a 7.3 get well over 300,000 miles, heck here in Canada we get around 500,000 kms 👍🇨🇦
Yeah I've gotten some flack on that comment! What i meant really is that if the part seems it will go 100k miles then it should be fine for 200k+ miles. There is just a fine line between a part that is ok to use and one that will go the distance. Many rebuilders just put in the OK to use parts not worrying about whether it'll go the distance or not. I don't like to use any part I feel won't go the distance! Thanks for the comment.
Mr, Sanders YOU are invaluable.Thank you so much. Building a 1993 e4od f150 with I6 can not get 4 clutches and steels in packs and big snap ring wont go in, Everthing after cebter support is off. Any ideas?
Sounds like you have 3 clutch drums being a 6cylinder transmission. As far as the snap ring issue it sounds like something is misassembled, possibly intermediate sprag race in backwards
About a year ago I had to delete the channel and reupload every video on a different channel (long story) but all my videos are up on this channel. The tear down video has a picture of a Red Ford F-250 on a lift! That was the first series E4OD I posted. Just go to my channel and search my videos you should be able to find it. The E4OD tear down is very close to a 4R100 tear down ! Hope this helps. Not the best video but it literally was my first You-Tube video.
I somewhat have a video on this, my "E4OD/4R100 TCC/PWM Lock-up systems explained" video shows a problem I had with a Pump body/Stator. The stator must be pressed out of the stator body. Its not to hard but support the body right where the stator comes through and it generally comes right out. 6 minutes into the video I explain what happened.
So I have an e4od and it is not going in to lock up. Now I changed out my TPS and Speed sensor to see if that would help and it didn't. How ever I disconnected the TPS and ran it. The shifts were harder and the lock up didn't engage at all under a load or where my peddle was. So I am not sure what is inbetween the TPS and the transmission that would cause it not to go in to lock up. And ideas?
Hey Marshall! I just found your rebuild vids. It looks very difficult to do. I have an E4 out of a 95 F450 and the First gear slips bad and when it does catch, it shudders. Truck will not take off under load. I never tore one apart so I was wondering if you had vids or tips how to disassemble. local shops want 5k to build and i just had this thing rebuilt less than a year ago and it failed already. Im pretty mechanically inclined but I dont know if this is something worth tackling. Any thoughts?
I have a question, I recently repaired the transmission of my ford, year 99 7.3L engine, the problem I have is that it is not making the respective speed changes automatically, it stays in the first, for it to release the other speeds I have to accelerate to 2500 rpm and release the accelerator and accelerate again so that it goes to the next speed and already in the third she makes the change automatically to 4
Good question! ANY gear wobble and the planetary is no good. As far as gear end play they are all different. You just have to look closely at the thrust washers on the side of each gear and make sure there not worn. Mainly looking for one or two with a lot more ENDPLAY than the others. Best explanation I can give on that one!
Hello Marshall. First off thank you so much for your videos on this e4od transmission. They have been really broken down and easy to follow so now I'm not as worried about tackling my own. I was hoping I could get your input as to what direction to go first. Long story short. I have a 95 f150 4wd with the e4od. Has 290000 miles on it. While out driving it suddenly quit. Won't shift into any gear but now makes a whining noise. Checked for fluid and it full (and has been taken care of multiple times). And there is no check engine light. Should I have a transmission shop look at it first? Or is there anything I can check to narrow down what could have happened? I appreciate it if you have a minute to help!
Your welcome ! Nothing really to check out on that one if it has nothing in ALL gears then some inside the transmission Stripped or Broke ! Only other thing to verify is the transfer case ! If it has park and it holds then it is ok as well. Be sure to check out my latest videos as the one you watched is one of my first You-Tube videos. There is Everything needed to properly build an E4OD/ 4R100 on my channel. The latest series is a 1994 Ford Lightning. Thanks for the Comments
No gears? Sounds like the 97 E4OD i'm doing now. Turned out to be the OD planet splines stripped out. Marshall talks about that as the number one failure.
Thanks Mark A. I'm currently in the process of making room to do the project. I think that will be harder than doing the actual rebuild 😅 but yes I'm dying to know what happened!
@@ryantreuter I bought a used known failed E4OD for a couple hundred and using Marshall videos to do build it. I have a small backhoe that's heavy so i'm beefing it up. I overheated the original transmission, but still driving it, when I was going up a couple mountains in TN with a heavy trailer in tow. I wanted very little down time so i'm building this one so when I go to pull my original, I can just swap the two, on top of adding a bigger cooler, 3 clutch billet converter and more. I can't afford the down time lol. Cleaning and inspecting, i've found, is what burns the most time in this so far. I'll be ordering parts next week and begin puzzle it back together. Cleanliness is critical! If it's not clean, the filth could be hiding a bad part so make sure it's clean, then clean it again and inspect. Im taking my time only because I have a second tranny in hand. Gooooooood luck my friend. Keep us posted!
No ! Only real reason would be if your building a Super Heavy Duty unit that requires a 6 pinion rear planet for strength. Most heavy duty units are just fine with the 4 pinion aluminum rear planet and drum
Ay chief, a little disheartened when the first part ( the low reverse inner sprag race) was needed !!! im looking at a 3.398 O.D. ( only specs. i could get) ( ibelive if it is after 97 it should be good ?) for my year 2003 f250 4r100 4x4 5.4 is this correct ?
Yes you are correct late 97-05 uses a 3.400 outer diameter race w/17 element roller clutch. 89-early 97 uses a 3.200 outer diameter race w/16 element roller clutch.
Where are you ordering your rebuild kit and parts from? I'm about to start my 4x2 1996 E4OD rebuild and want to get the borg warner clutches but don't know who sells kits with them.
@@marshallsanders5672I was lucky enough to find that WIT is just down the road from me! Perusing their website I found that they don't have an option for 97's, they start at 98 for the 7.3! Of course I'm going to poop by and see if the 98 is compatible! Thanks Marshall have this dude on the road (in a few months... Lol)
