It's nice to hear from someone who knows what they're talking about, very knowledgeable about the outdoors, the materials in the environment you are in, and appreciation for the outdoors.
Thanks Uncle for a great video..I really enjoyed it..Your a very humble down to earth man and I like that..good tips on how to use a survival knife..I love Gerber knives..have a couple myself..strongarm my favorite..thanx again Uncle 👍
It’s not a bushcraft knife, it’s a survival knife and that ferro rod is not a primary rod. It is an interesting setup for whatever reason I’m tempted to buy even knowing I have better knives for the job.
@@IndianHemlock Thank you for the information I am considering getting one it looks like a solid knife. Plus there’s nothing wrong with having another knife 😎.
I have the original bear grylls knife for 12-13 years. It’s generally a good camp knife like you said. Steels soft so the edge needs to be dressed up more often but the stainless keeps it a low maintenance. My mora heavy duty is a better bushcraft knife and cheaper but needs to the be maintained a little more.
Thanks for the thorough review! Like other viewers, I’ve had my eye on this knife for a while. Amazon has it listed for a decent price, so I’ll consider picking it up this spring for hikes and camping. I wish Gerber had this knife in a full straight edge version; I believe the Bear Grills knife offered a straight edge option. Great video!👍
I have the original BG knife and lmf 2. The serrations are awesome if you're a hunter they go through small bone and cartilage like nothing else I've tried.
first thing i did after getting this knife was to attach the whistle to the fire rod. you can loop it through the horizontal belt loop if your really that worried about the rod falling out. you can also pull the whistle apart and add a longer lanyard as it is a simple bind connection if your worried about being able to use the whistle quickly. that way you can loop it around the sheath and just flip the Velcro and bring it up to your mouth. also a way to store a good length of paracord for emergencies or to use the spear attachment holes.
I have the Bears Grylls Ultimate Pro non serrated and believe it or not, it's a good knife. Although I have many high dollar knives that I use regularly, I still use it from time to time. Great video thanks for sharing
Thanks Thomas, I’ve been using this one regularly and it’s not bad at all, I like when I have it on it’s below my waist strap of my backpack so I’m able to take it out easily, thanks for watching !!
Hi there. I have the same knife and I noticed the same problem with the ferro rod. I just tied it with elastic rope through its lanyard hole and with the bottom velcro strap. The knife is okay, but two biggest downsides are that the knife is too thick for food prep (but manageable) and hole package wit the sheat and all is just heavy. Good review nonetheless, thanks.
Very good video . Knives like these are great for when you can't afford the " good " ones . For the price you can outfit yourself , wife , & 2 kids with a decent knife for about 100 bucks which I did when we started hiking etc 👍 thanks
Well said Gary !!, affordable and half decent , wish it wasn’t made in China, but unfortunately 90% of our household items are !! Appreciate your honest comment and thanks for watching !!
Just received this as a gift. I like knives of all sorts and I guess this has its place but my go to’s are the bk2 for bushcrafting and the old hickory for camping and light bushcraft. But of the two I like the old hickory best.
This isn’t a bad knife, I could do without the serrations. BK2 is a great knife, my son has that one and he always liked it ! Appreciate ya stopping by and leaving a comment ! Take care and have a great week 👍🏼😃
It's not a bad beater knife TBH. Not sure that that I would trust my life to a Chinese made 7cr17mov steel blade though. For messing around at camp or a gift to a kid just getting introduced to knives it's great, but for those of us that can spend the bucks there are far better options out there. 7cr17mov is a very cheap steel and they heat treat it to make it quite soft so it's durable. It also means that you will be sharpening it every time you sneeze. If you got to have Gerber, I would recommend the Gerber Strongarm it's a solid knife, and the 420HC is strong and stainless.
A lot of good points there bluegrass !! It’s a good camp knife . I heard a lot of good on the strong arm ! Appreciate your feedback and comments ! Thanks for watching !
I have the original BG knife and I smack it around super often. I have yet to have an issue with it. I don't chop with it though. I cross-baton it. Far more effective than chopping and far safer because you're not swinging the knife around. I won't chop with any blade smaller than 10 inches
I really like this knife !! I could do without the serrations ! Yes cross battening would be more effective ! Appreciate ya watching and commenting !! Take care and have a great week 👍🏼
replace that rubber o ring on the fire starter, you can get pack of o rings for 10 bucks with ton of different sizes there always handy anyway. And the price of 26 dollars for a knife like that is awesome Really.
I wish the blade material was of a higher quality, but for the price ($25 on Amazon) there's no room to complain. Great review though, keep up the good content! 👍🏼
I’ve been wearing and using this knife more and more when I go to the woods, it’s becoming a favorite, I believe you will like it as well !! Appreciate you watching !!
Question are you in the eastern woodlands? Cause I live in the Carolinas years ago I lived in the southern part of West Virginia the outdoors are the best.
@@IndianHemlock that's great to hear about of the RU-vid videos that I watch are all north of me all the way to Maine. Keep it up and enjoy seeing your videos. I'm working on getting a second cutting tool that I find to be a awesome tool I would like to see if you can get it to use out in the bush you won't be disappointed with it.
I have gerber strongarm, prodigy, SOG seal pup, and KABAR BK2. And I think gerber knives are most attractive for its design and effectiveness. I feel rthat ultimate knife is also attractive in outdoor with your review.
Well thank you very much !! It is a very nice all around knife, well made !! My son has the KABAR BK2 as well and that’s one of his favorites ! Thanks for watching !!
I never had my hands on the Swiss tech so I can’t say for sure, Swiss tech is definitely less expensive, and looks more like a combat style knive, now it is a lot longer and you would have to consider that as far as being able to handle a much longer knife and does weigh a little more. Swiss tech 10” blade 15”overall length 14.5 oz. Gerber 4.8”blade 10” overall length 11.02 oz. Both Made from Stainless Steel Good luck with your choice and Thanks !!
It’s hard to find any info in this !! I didn’t think it was, but I’m hearing this newer version of this knife are full tang, back when it was produced as the BG survival knife it wasn’t full tang ! Hope this helps ! Thanks for watching !!
Sorry sir but I'm gonna stay with my KBAR. I chopped a 4×4 pine in half with this KBAR along with pipe, metal rod with a hammer on the back of the blade. KBAR just an awesome tool. I like Gerbers smaller knives though.
No apologies needed, I love all brands of knives, KBAR is excellent knives, my son has a couple, he loves them !! Thanks for watching and commenting !!
I bought the black strongarm and the ultimate fixed blade at the same time, both were on sale at cabelas, just ordered an LMF II just because. Love the sheaths on the strongarm and the LMF,will keep the ultimate in my car😎.
Hi 👋🏻 our Ash trees get what they call the emerald ash borer 🪲 beetle. And they lay eggs in the crevices of the bark, and the larvae feed underneath the bark, and make tunnels through the Cambian layer, which interns kills off the food supply of the tree. We do have young ash trees that pop up then and a lot of suckers, and they can survive a while until the bark starts to get more mature, and then it starts all over again, thank you for watching and for the question. I appreciate it, take care😊👍🏼
Awesome John , I hope you like it !! I tell ya, I have many knives, but I tend to use this one a lot !! Great knife! Appreciate the visit, have a great weekend 👍🏼🔥😊
I've never been a fan of knives with a serration for outdoor use. They take away a good useful chunk of real estate of the knife. Won't be buying this one Sir! Thank you for the video :)
I would agree with that ! I don’t like serrated blade when splitting or battening wood it wants to go off to one side ! I certainly appreciate your visit and for your comments ! Take care 👍🏻
