I transferred the whistle to the ferro rod, because when you fielddress animals the whistle will get dirty with all sorts of bodily fluids and it's harder to clean. It's a great tool!
I saw this at Target but it's $49.99 in the store. Looked it up online and indeed $26.49EA! Would not have known about this without this video. Thanks for the heads up!
The “eagle” symbol indicates where to strike the ferro rod, it’s supposed to be a flame symbol. I have the original bear knife I immediately bought that when it came out I love it.
I bought the bg model when I was young and naive, the edge didn't hold and the built-in sharpener was worthless. I gave it to a buddy a year later but kept the ferro rod, still have it, the most useful part of the knife. The pocket knife was better.
This version is actually slightly different than the BG knife. Definitely improved. The tang extends much further down. The pommel is bigger. The handle is thinner. The spine that's sharpened for the ferro rod/scraping is longer. It actually weighs more too. The finger guard is slightly shorter. Good video thanks
Target currently (12/12/2022) shows this for $54.99 online, Gerber's online price is $49.99 on sale, free shipping over $50', While Amazon shows it for $54.99 with free shipping for Prime members. Too bad, I'd love to have one for $24.99.
So, Gerber for whatever reason dropped the branding partnership with Bear Grylls. And when that happened, they changed the look of the knife. That's why it's different. What I do wish they would do, is bring back the Ultimate Pro knife. The Ultimate Pro (which I have one), was their extra-premium Bear Grylls knife, with a thicker blade, more premium steel, full tang, and a more burly sheath. It was also non-serrated only. But yeah this knife is a good knife, I have one of this model as well.
Gerber eventually saved this knife. The Ultimate Pro is almost indestructable. Believe me, people tried. It had better steel, a full tang and other improvements. Sadly, by that time BG was no longer popular and they discontinued it about 8 years ago. It went from $81 to $148 on secondatry markets. I picked one up when it came out and I am glad I did.
@@NotNuffKnives Ok, so we're back, and it was put to heavy use: chopping/batoning wood (pine, oak, maple), started a fire by the lake with the flint, dug a hole with it, and cut up fish. Overall, it was incredible. I read how so many fuss about it not being the Bear Grylls model, but this was pefect for heavy, north woods use. All my knives (Buck 692 Vanguard, Rapala filet knife) are all rubber-handled knives, so this is the perfect addition to my working knives.
Woah! JT from NotNuffNerf? :0 Never knew you had a knife channel, bud! What are the odds we have this as a crossover interest, lol. Great review, and love the history, man! Cheers.
Hey man what a small world! I was wondering how you found this channel! I actually started this one in 2013 and use it as a hobby because I love knives and outdoor gear. Love to have you, man!
@@NotNuffKnives Oh, man, that's so cool! :D I just so happened to be looking for reviews on the SOG Seal Pup and the Gerber Strongarm and happened upon this video, and within the first few seconds, I was like "Waiiit a minute..." LOL. Happy to be here, man! I also love knives and fun lil gear, so I'm stoked to see what you got cooking up. ☺
@@Sanguivore Awesome man! I own a Strongarmqa nd Prodigy but I don't think I have a Seal Pup! My collection is decent but far from where I want it to be RN! 😝
Not against serations, but to much of that blade is serations. Would be nice if they offered it without them. Also I absolutely hate the design of that ferro rod storage. Moving through thick bush like I have here in MICHIGAN with that on my belt, could see loosing that ferro rod to a wait a minute vine or bush. Esse had the right idea, put all your essentials including a ferro rod in an altoids tin and the tin in a pouch mounted to the sheath. But to someone else that knife could be just the thing, the price is right for sure.
They did two up grades to the BG knife one the same as the this with out serrations and the later one with a better shealth a pull through sharpener and a steel up grade, blacked out blade instead of the grey and no serrations either. From memory the first was called the ultimate survival knife and the later up grade the ultimate pro. If you can handle the bright orange the later version is good knife for the price around $40 i paid for one. Don't think it's made anymore but if gerber release that later version in the better colors and the price is right it's a good knife.
@@uncletomscabin2073 I don’t see why they shouldn’t unless it’s a contract expiration thing with BG. I noticed their UFBK did not come out until 2019ish so maybe they had to wait 5-7 years for an exclusivity contract with BG to run out or something.
That pommel is not for glass breaking. When they talk about using part of a knife for glass breaking, it is about specifically breaking car windows and other windows that are hard to break because of how they are designed, and the glass breaking portion of the knife has a point. Otherwise, you could use anything that's hard at all for 'glass breaking', so they wouldn't mention it as a feature of a knife. Otherwise, good review.
Probably some online only pricing they had at the time of the video. I will make a community post with screenshots to ensure my community I am not trying to mislead anyone. Quite the opposite. Trying to alert you guys of the deals when they are active. Nothing lasts forever! 🔪
I have one a e look at it from time to time because I'm waiting for a zombie apocalypse and as soon as theirs one and the grid falls and internet dies I'll be back to leave a review.
Sure thing! 4.8" Blade and 10 Inches (H) x 1.25 Inches (W) x .75 Inches (D) Overall. I’m uncertain about the tang but if a company does not openly state it’s full tang, its usually not.
@@Book_of_Mormon I stand corrected, thanks! @Chris M. I was definitely thinking about another knife and I apologize. The dimensions however, are correct.
@@Book_of_MormonApparently the pommel/hammer is separated from the tang intentionally to electrically isolate it in case you cut through live wires. I have no idea what the isolation is like - should try to measure it with my electrical insulation tester.
A lot of people like them more because more of the blade’s length is usable for things like batoning and food prep. They both serve their purpose however.
Yes, the tang goes all the way through the handle with the exception of the rear hummer. That hummer is not attached to the tang, it is attached to the plastic handle. With that said, I would not use this knife as hummer. Other than that the knife is very reliable. This knife, however, has one major problem - it is made of very cheap steel, it wont hold its sharpness for long. I would rather buy Gerber LMF II, Prodigy or Strongarm, they are made of much better steel. But make sure you buy original, made in the USA, not the cheap Chinese replica.
7CR17MOV is a trash steel. The metal is too soft for any real use. If you're just using it for light tasks, it will be fine. But, it is no good as a survival type knife.
full tang doesn't matter as long as the tang is 1/2 as long as the handle. what's more important is how wide and thick the tang is at the point it goes inside the handle. knives can be full tang but snap there because they're thin or narrow down tang length really doesn't mean much it's all about girth
I do like the idea of a full tang but I just replied to a comment above...Apparently the pommel/hammer is separated from the tang intentionally to electrically isolate it in case you cut through live wires. I have no idea what the isolation is like - should try to measure it with my electrical insulation tester.
It's nothing special to be quite honest, and regardless of how tight it fits the ferro rod should have something that makes it impossible to fall out. Just more gerber chinese pot metal
No one should want some dudes name on Thier knife just being honest it's a better knife green gray black charcoal handle and the pummel is a hammer and Fire still a knife sharpener and a whistle and it is very very well built an made right but bg should never be on anyone's knife for good reasons besides the knife sheath can be modified and added to
Was watching this because I can have that in 50% sale and it will be then 30 euros. But... Serrated.. I hate those with passion.. If I get it I will use time to reprofile the blade.. And with that steel not sure I like to waste my time.. Better get 2 morakniv companion heavyduty... There is knifes and there is serrated things.. Even my leatherman wave have 2 knifes.. Serrated get out fast.. I have one serrated knife what I like to use.. I cut bread with it.
I just feel like I never want to be that guy strapped to my car seat when my car is sinking in a lake, and wishing my knife had serrations 🤣. I know it's extreme, but I always think about that lol.
