Steve was part of my life for so lng, what a DJ he was!!! He was the best ever, without a doubt. I can't help feeling that the BBC decision had something to do with his early departure from our lives. And they never even asked the listeners for their input. What a disgusting organisation it is.

He brought light and warmth to weekday afternoons and a smile to everybody who listened. The BBC don't care one iota what listeners think. The damage started with Radio 1 in the nineties aka Matthew Bannister and Trevor Dann, and then, the Beeb thought they could pull it off with Radio 2 in the current decade. Shameful, shameful, shameful if you ask me. Current DG Tim Davie and the current R2 controller have a lot to answer for and should be dragged over the coals to get an answer! They've had a few presenters die since they got rid of them, and yet they're HAPPY TO LOSE AUDIENCE SHARE! Pathetic.

About 25 years ago I txt'd him. I was in my piano delivery van with my mate. we had no radio but speakers in the doors and we drove past that massive radio mast place at Rampisham north of Dorchester and were able to listen to "Steve Wright in the Afternoon" for about 10 - 15 minutes. We even got a mention on the show and he talked about how people sometimes hear radio coming out of their refrigerators.

An absolute legend of the UK dies and yet we still get these right wing nutters using his death as an opportunity to slag off the BBC. Steve wasn't bitter that his time slot was given to someone new. He understood that's how it works. The BBC gave Steve the platform to entertain us kids back in the 1980's and we loved it. He was still working for the BBC over 40 years later. Give us all a break and appreciate the talent we have just lost. RIP the best DJ we've ever seen. ❤

RIP Steve Write. The same happened to poor Benny Hill after another BBC b'stard John Howard Davies infiltrated Thames TV pretending to be freelance, made deliberately bad programs to alienate viewers over to the BBC then fired 300 loyal Thames staff including Benny Hill who always beat shows Davies produced like Monty Python in the ratings and then he went back to the BBC. It was telling how none of the Pythons spoke up for Benny and then we had the absurd sight of John Cleese standing up for comedy freedom afterwards alongside Rowan Atkinson who took Bennys hard earned prime time spot with vastly inferior Bean.

I went off Steve Wright when he started slagging of The Smiths, The Pogues, The Housemartins, Billy Bragg, Echo and the Bunnymen and other similar acts who were the real musical talents of the 1980s but heavily promoted the likes of Duran Duran, Wham, Spandau Ballet as well as all the dance music and the rest of the bland pop that dominate daytime Radio 1 airplay at the time. I’am sure he was a Thatcherite because he described the CND protesters at Greenham Common as ‘naughty peace women’, he criticised the striking miner during the bitter dispute and always pulling down cricket, golf, darts, snooker and indoor bowls, describing them as boring sports.

Once again the media is swamped with accolades for a "celebrity" who had practically no talent and has died. What talent did this guy have? None, other than the "Gift of the Gab". For someone who did nothing but talk and present radio shows, this nationwide grief is so over the top it's untrue. I remember the same thing happened when Wogan died, another "celebrity" who did nothing but talk yet managed to convince millions he was a giant in the entertainment industry. I expect the BBC will name one of their buildings "Wright House" as they did with Wogan. It just seems odd to me, that when someone dies who really did do something for people they often don't get mentioned, yet alone have a day of mourning for them, yet someone who just plays music sets the nation in emotional turmoil. What a peculiar race the British are now. No wonder the country is in the state it is.

I think you've missed the point here. If one of our friends or one of our family dies, the loss is the PERSON not what they achieved, or what they did or what they were good at. Ironically, even though Steve Wright was in the entertainment industry and 'did nothing but talk' as you claim, he occupied a place in millions of people's afternoons for decades whether it was helping them to get through a shift, keeping them cheerful while getting from A to B or working outdoors in the rain or even keeping someone company. It actually isn't to do with his 'celebrity' at all but wholly to do with everyone's personal reflection on their own lives, where they were, how they felt, what they were up to while SW's show kept them going. If you don't understand that then there's nothing more to say. As it happens, I was a part of his show and I had the pleasure of witnessing his sincerity and genuine care off-air. Of course people die every day who are equally sincere and genuinely caring but the memorable ones are those who haven't much time and nothing to gain but still MAKE the time for you, just you. The tributes I'm hearing from personal colleagues are vouching for the same thing. He positively impacted millions of lives, five days of the week, whether you like it or not. That's why they're sad. Kapisch??
