The Clash: Was 'ageist' BBC wrong to replace Steve Wright on Radio 2? 

The ✴rse is gonna drop out of the listening figure in the afternoons once Steve Wright , 66 , aka the "king of the afternoons" goes into enforced semi-retirement.

How the hell he got to where he is now...I'll never know...!!!

To be fair, I like Zoe Ball…. Possibly as a neighbour. She would be great as a neighbour! She’s light and fluffy. Everything is “ amazing “. “ Fantastic” She would be the one who would offer to look after your dog, tortoise, feed your much loved fish. Also now that she’s older, she would nt be having the loud raucous parties as much! However….. as a broadcaster especially in the morning. I want a little bit of humour, great music, as well as someone who might not agree with the guest all the time. Or even disagree occasionally with the Traffic guy! In other words. I don’t want vacuous continually!! But according to the grate BBC ( I used the different spelling there, as that is what they are doing now- grating on me!) 🤷🏼‍♀️ BUT as I said before Zoe would be great as your neighbour!

That frightful Vernon 'Kurrr' last week was just as bad.

I love Zoe Ball herself. What I hate about her show is it sounds like she's got a whole classroom full of people in the studio with her. But maybe that's because I'm not much of a morning person!

Yes, he's rubbish and slow as hell. Listening to PopMaster when he does it is excrutiating. I bet he would not have got the afternoon show on R2 if he were straight. This is about the BBC wanting to be seen as woke and inclusive.

Mike Read rocks. The most talented breakfast DJ ever. Shame he's most famous for banning Relax. But he has always had the best sense of humour, and a lot of common sense, and never afraid to speak his opinion.

​@Amperzand I believe he was forced into doing that by Radio 1 controller Derek Chinnery because he & the other BBC bosses weren't comfortable at him playing Relax & also presenting Saturday Superstore on TV at the time. Typically it caused a backlash against the BBC & eventually leading to the said Radio 1 controller stepping down

don't forget Tony B.. he's the only one I listen to regularly.

The perfect replacement for Ken Bruce would either be BBC Radio London's Gary Crowley or Robert Elms...

In a country of 60 million people there are plenty of young talented people. And they deserve a chance.

The problem, ironically given their ageist attitude, is that the BBC is a dinosaur that doesn't realise it's dead yet. They are desperate, in fact perhaps obsessed with hanging onto youth culture, not realising that young folks today are going elsewhere for their entertainment. Spotify being a prime example. So they chop, and change, and move things around hoping to find a magic formula to bring kids back to the station, and in the meantime piss off their true audience, older listeners. It's no coincidence that Radio 2 blows Radio 1 out of the water in audience figures these days.

He's playing music I don't like, if it wasn't for pop master I wouldn't be tuning in at all. I used to listen to Johnnie walkers rock show on a Saturday at eight they've now bumped him to eleven on a Tuesday night, probably hoping that he looses listeners so they can cancel it altogether.@@raymondbonington9355

Exactly . None of them do and they have many alternative outlets that cater for their ‘music’ that don’t require a licence . If they want us to continue to pay for a licence they need to cater for those who actually pay for it ….and it ain’t teenagers . Radio two needs to return to the values of the Terry Wogan era . A gentler time ….not the raucous stuff we get from the likes of Zoe Ball .

Steve actually plays to much (c) rapping to try to stay down with the kids but it didn't save him. Ken Bruce is still good but by the time Zoe is over I forget to switch on until he's nearly over.

@@SheilaTitchener Radio 2 is for people above 25 - 30 years old. Terry Wogan was only 39 when he started on the station. Steve Wright has been on for over 20 years and it's time for the next incumbent to get the job.
