Mel Powell on piano. If you put his name into google you will get a lot of information coming up about him but interestingly not much about the fact that he was a crucial member of The (Glenn Miller) Army Airforce Orchestra. There is a beautiful composition called ' Pearl's on velvet' which I first heard on an LP I picked up in a second hand shop in Vancouver. Powell was the composer I seem to remember. I must look it out again.

That was typical for the period. But for that period, this movie actually had quite a few compared to others. And they have musicianship roles equal to the white players where in most movies they had only VERY stereotypical roles (like being a maid). If you want to see that topic covered very cleverly, with a lot of truth in its humor, see the 1987 movie "Hollywood Shuffle." Of course, bands at the time tended to also be segregated. However, Benny Goodman was maybe the first to start changing that with Lionel Hampton in 1935, Charlie Christian in 1938, and others. In fact, when a movie studio wanted the Benny Goodman orchestra for a movie, they told Benny the black musicians weren't welcome and not to bring them. Goodman said, "If they can't be there, I won't be there." And Goodman got his way. So, there were at least some people back in that day pioneering some changes.

@@trainliker100 Very true; I believe I saw some of these movies way back when.- There were several jazz musicians who had a great time playing with artists of different races. The problems were created by some politicians and club owners mostly!
@macwyll

@@bobboscarato1313 Very true. Most musicians, including myself don't care about color when it comes to jamming together. The unity and respect for each other's instrumental abilities and passion is what it's all about. Bless all of those men and Virginia for showing the way.

OK! OK! OK! It is just a 'SOBRIQUET' It was just a wonderful moment of fun with some of the great Jazz musicians of the day having a lot of fun., Black, White and Latino and whoever else. They were fully aware of that. It all started with an Afro/American musician by the name of Buddy Bolden. He played Trumpet. When you get a chance just contact your local retailer of CDs/DVDs etc or you can go online and order a special collection of 4 DVDs with the history of Jazz put together by someone by the name of KEN BURNS. Starting from Buddy Bolden to Wynton Marsalis. The bar code number on the bottom of the black and blue package box is 9 398710 295498 and has a picture of Louis 'Satchmo' Armstrong sitting on a tall stool and holding his trumpet., when placed on your bookshelf is what you see. (In my opinion the picture of Satchmo was the best person to be there.) The front picture is a group of 8 Afro American musicians(7) with their instruments. The lady in the middle I take it would be a singer as she does not have a musical instrument. If you really love JAZZ this would be an excellent choice for your collection.
