“I Only Spoke To Him Yesterday” Dickie Bird’s Heart-breaking Tribute To Michael Parkinson

Celebrated chat show host Sir Michael Parkinson has died peacefully at home at the age of 88 surrounded by loved ones, his family has said.
The TV star host interviewed some of Hollywood’s biggest names throughout his illustrious career - with names such as Jimmy Cagney, Fred Astaire, Lauren Bacall and Ingrid Bergman on the list.
A statement from Sir Michael’s family said: “After a brief illness Sir Michael Parkinson passed away peacefully at home last night in the company of his family.
“The family request that they are given privacy and time to grieve.”
TalkTV’s Ian Collins is joined by cricket legend Dickie Bird who pays tribute to his late friend.
“I only spoke to him yesterday morning. We had a good chat and he said to me ‘you know Dickie, I think I’m getting towards the end' and we said our goodbyes.”

Whoever the presenter is. I admire the sensitivity he showed when Dickie Bird became emotional. Sadly it's as rare as hens' teeth among modern journalists. RIP Michael Parkinson.

The presenter is Ian Collins. He’s pretty good. I used to listen to him on LBC radio. My brother’s spoken to him before on the radio. He’s a nice fella.

Watching the Interviews of Parkinson you laugh, cry, feel intrigue, sadness, anger… it was like reading an Awsome book. RIP an absolute legend! NATIONAL TREASURE. Parkinson was a REAL journalist not like wimps today.

I hated Parkinson and his forced laughter at weak jokes. I only ever watched three programmes and was turned off the celebrity cult forever.

@leonardgibney2997 : Perhaps if you watch a few more than 'three programmes' you'll see the wood from the trees. Part of Parky's job was to put his guests at ease in order that they open up to share gems from their life-stories. His legacy is that of a very decent, humble man who could walk and talk with princes and paupers. And thanks to Sir Michael Parkinson there is now a historical record of these cultural icons for all to enjoy.
