The Prime Minister has promised that individuals capable of working who refuse job offers will lose their benefits after 12 months.
Rishi Sunak, outlining his plans to reform the welfare system if the Conservatives win the next general election, saying that "unemployment support should be a safety net, not a choice."
He aims to ensure that hard work is always rewarded and the government plan to be more proactive in helping people return to work and less inclined to over-medicalise everyday challenges.
Proposed measures include, ending benefits after 12 months for those deemed capable of working who fail to meet their work coach's conditions, such as accepting a job offer. Making the work capability assessment stricter, expecting those with less severe conditions to seek employment and
reviewing the fit note system to focus on individuals' abilities, conducted by independent assessors instead of GPs.
