The flickering light of Japanese candles.
A Japanese candle is a candle unique to Japan that is made by extracting wax from the fruit of a broad-leaved tree called Haze.
It began to be made in the Muromachi period, and is used to light the main hall during Buddhist ceremonies at temples and to create an emotional atmosphere during tea ceremonies.
Maiko is also a symbol of Kyoto. By combining the white coating with the light of Japanese candles, the color of the skin is closer to the color of the skin, and the beauty shines more.
The main character this time is HIROKAZU TAGAWA, who makes Japanese candles in Fushimi, Kyoto.
Originally, he had a different job, but since there was no successor to his wife's parent's home, the Japanese candle studio "Nakamura Rosoku," he began training.
TAGAWA has been carrying out various activities for the past 20 years, hoping that a wide range of generations will know about Japanese candles.
One of them is a proposal for a way to enjoy other than lighting a fire.
For example, "picture candles", in which a picture of flowers is drawn on a candle.
Although it is a craft that was born in cold regions such as the Tohoku region, Nakamura Candle has a unique pattern.
In addition to flowers, we have incorporated modern patterns.
This has created a new value for Japanese candles that can be enjoyed as an interior decoration.
However, Japanese candles are now facing a crisis.
What should we do to preserve Japanese candles for the next generation?
Let's take a closer look at TAGAWA's activities and their thoughts.

うちは、曾祖父さんの代までお坊さんと神職両方やってた。親父は神職やりたかったらしいけど、俺はお坊さんの方がいい。
