Because american studios often do it for profits. So it's just a lame retelling that will get people in theaters because they like the original. Also why come up with your own stories when you can take an obscure interesting foreign movie and remake it? "The Ring" is an exception though. I like the american one a bit better.

Often because they think people are stupid so they feel they need to like Americanize things that don’t need Americanization to be enjoyed by American film fans. These movies are also more often then not assigned to American directors by studio heads who want to replicate a successful foriegn film but the american directors rarely to never are invested in the project…it’s a project either for a nice paycheck or their resume.

Well I'm a victim of incest so thank god I trusted my own instincts and decided to watch your video before watching the movie even if I had interest. Thank you for the trigger warnings because I just somehow had a feeling that's what it'd be about. I'll also add from my perspective that the whole "that's how my father showed love" thing, while probably delivered in an extremely goofy way, kinda tracks to how some victims of this try to cope with that situation. There's a whole normalization of that abuse that occurs to protect the abuser from all family members generally whether they know, are victims themselves or just dismiss completely the "bad vibes". So it makes sense that Adrian's understanding of the situation as a child would be that. It's not uncommon. That's why sex education is as important already early on because once you can understand what sex is you can start being like "okay this is an insane situation and my feelings of disgust and fear are appropriate and not me being 'disrespectful' and 'rejecting' a member of my family". Cuz when it's the people who are supposed to guide you and you're supposed to learn from telling you shit like that, you don't even think it's weird enough to ask other people if it's a dynamic that happens in their family or not. I remember being very confused when I'd hear other kids IRL or media being like "ew I accidentally saw a parent naked that's so gross and made me wanna throw up". Cuz it'd just be a 🤷moment for me.

Thank you for your comment. Lately, I hear more and more people saying that sex education should not be done in school but be left to the responsibility of the parents and I find that idea so dangerous. Yes, sex ed can make some kids uncomfortable and embarrassed but it also saves lives. That's how my cousin realized what her grandpa was doing is not normal and, by being the first to talk about it outside the family, she allowed 2 generations of victims to start the healing process and saved her sister from being the next victim. So proud of her, and you kind stranger, for your strength in sharing your story so it may help others.
@ArturGlass.C
@ArturGlass.C 4 месяца назад
@@Nl0R I was already too old when I had my first sex ed and I remember the teacher trying to explain the risk of assault to us all. We must have been 8 or 9 by that time I think. So I basically got no understanding what what I went through was assault but also told that assault is a really big deal and I don't want that to happen. So I was then scared and paranoid it would happen to me because that sounded traumatic without realizing yes it sounded traumatic but mostly I didn't want to be re-victimized. None of the teachers assumed that one of us could have already been assaulted and they expected us to understand the general concept without telling us about consent or sex in general. That's just not how you go about it. As for people fighting sex ed being taught I saw that too and it's why I'm sharing. Because I really can't stress enough that there's only two reasons that happens. 1. People being dangerously ignorant Or 2. People who benefit from kids not knowing. Which is a HUGE case for the people who try to advocate and push those laws. At some point you have to ask yourself, who benefits and it's REALLY BAD. Predators know what they're doing and they've been coasting on non-predator being so disturbed by the idea that they don't think about it or the implications. So telling people why it's important is a first. But there's gonna be people having pushback and they need to be investigated quite frankly. As an example, there is a reason the christian religion puts such a big impact on "letting the parents and the church have as much control as possible on a child's education" and also happens to have such a csa problem. Not a coïncidence. (my family got generational trauma around small town christianity doctrines so that's something I'm familiar with) I am really glad your cousin had a better experience with sex education and they're really strong for speaking out. I genuinely truly believe while it probably wouldn't have been avoidable for me it would have stopped me from normalizing a lot of stuff and revictimizing myself in many other ways if I'd been able to know and speak out earlier. Cuz the only people I thought I could turn to were untrustworthy af.

Thank you for making this comment, even though I'm sure that was hard for you. I do strongly advocate for sex education in schools, but I had never thought of this reasoning for it. Thank you so much again for finding the strength to speak out to try and help others.

Comparing Old Boy to Ole Boy (2013) it's really striking how... aimless Joe feels? With Oh Dae-su you can follow his line of logic: why he would do things and has reasons for the way he reacts to situations. But Joe just feels like a dick who just lashes out b/c the film doesn't set-up ANYTHING. Like just beating up soccer players and harassing random Asian people 😭 This remake literally can't stand on its own because it's borderline incomprehensible if you don't have the original context.
@purrgundy
@purrgundy 4 месяца назад
Not to mention the fact that at the beginning, Joe didn't give a fuck about his daughter and after seeing her 10 years later, he suddenly remembered she existed? Oh Dae-Su thought she died with her mother, so he had to grieve her. Two completely different situations and levels of character humanisation. Plus, if Marie did her research with the articles she read, she would've recognised her mother on the picture, no? I know she was young, but surely she would've investigated on her identity, her history, at least just a name or a face... or even the house it happened in!

EYYYY HOLY SHIT THIS MOVIE. Freshman year of college, first semester, my one professor invited the class over to his house to watch a movie. He ended up convincing us to watch the original Oldboy because. the allegory of the cave or something. and the four of us who showed up said cool whatever. we were all very nervous and overly-polite and sitting on couches and armchairs and eating popcorn lovingly prepared for us, hand-buttered, by a professor none of us actually really liked. and then we watched the movie and none of us were prepared. I think that exact scenario is the perfect way to experience oldboy 2003.

Another thing we have to discuss is the fact that studios have too much power over films and the direction directors want to take them. We've seen so many movies but come to fruition, cancelled after filming and editing, and edited so badly. Black filmmakers constantly talk about how much they have to fight studio exes and how controlling they are. Like why is a studio controlling heavily over a film by Spike Lee, one of the best known and respected Black directors? They wouldn't have done this if it was Fincher or Nolan.. I'm actually sad that this remake is one of the worst by Lee. He's not my favorite Black director, but he's done films with surreal moments and dark humor and he loves Asian cinema.

Don’t crucify me but I saw this Oldboy first with some friends in college. They showed it to me with no context and everything that you described about the og Oldboy was what I felt watching this. I was horrified by the twist and just in shock and then I went home and showed it to my mother.

That's hilarious but I still feel bad for ppl who saw this first. The og one was/is incredibly good. When it first came out my brother would show it to every single one of his friends that came over who hadn't seen it yet lol I recommend YMS's video comparing the two scene by scene if you have the time to spare

Not gonna lie, throughout the whole commentary, I felt like I would definitely have had a good (for lack of a better word) time watching this movie (my partner had already explained the plot of the original movie to me to my horror, so I would have already known the trauma waiting ahead). I actually felt it when Josh's character screamed / growled / cried at the news of the murder of his wife. I thought to myself that investigating the food you've eaten for 20 years everyday was actually really clever, and cooking the mice friends, the only solace he had found in those 2 decades kind of broke my heart for him... I am an avid animes and kdramas watcher. However, a lot of times when I'm watching some of the movies, the acting, or the amount of evil and plot twists will be too over the top for it to make sense to me and it'd take me out of the movie. When she showed homeboy from the original movie on the floor barking, I was convinced it would be one of those cases... People would probably brand it "camp" instead of unrealistic though. I'm also not convinced that characters stating some things to advance the plot is a downgrade from voice overs... I feel like voice overs can be a lazy option. I've met several people who considered OB their favourite movie. I don't know if it's because it makes them feel like they're edgy or provocative, or if it's because they've been told it's a great movie so they parrot it... But I've been duped before both ways: people giving horrible reviews to things I found perfectly entertaining, and amazing reviews for the most boring or underwhelming pieces of cinematography I've ever had the misfortune to watch, so if I have the stamina one day, I'll watch both of those movies to get a feel of them myself (:

@@Blullabythis made me giggle a little bit because the idea of Oldboy being mindlessly praised by edgey guys because Korean acting and directing is overdramatic is a really ironic take. I get where you’re coming from, but most people come out of watching controversial subject matter films with a sense of confusion, anger, and disgust. Cuties. Blonde. 50 Shades of Grey. 365 Days. The Old Boy remake. It’s a hard sell. The first Old Boy had to sell it to a completely fresh audience. There was no original Old Boy to explain details or soften the horror. That it made sense and succeeded almost universally to both Korean and non-Korean audiences alike, both critics and laypeople, is insane, especially considering how rare foreign cinema is to your average American. Like Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite was YEARS later. On top of that, the fact that you’re comparing Kdrama acting to Josh’s scream is IRONY. Screams and huge emotional moments are easy for audiences to feel for. You know, overdramatics. Nuanced acting is much harder. Kdrama acting is over dramatic because it’s made-for-TV and needs to get you quickly emotionally involved. They’re not trying to get prestigious awards, they’re trying to get high viewership. Same thing with American TV vs American Movies. TV acting is less prestigious to film acting. The very thing that you praise in the Old Boy remake is what you deride in Kdramas. However, I will say that Original Old Boy is understated in its acting even if the movie is more surreal/slapstick, especially compared to the remake, allowing the director to truly shine in letting you feel what the character is feeling while still maintaining nuance and ambiguity, which is hard as duck to do when the subject matter causes such instinctive gut reactions. Stuff like the barking is more due to the surreal script in a way that makes sense rather than bizarre acting choices to show grief. I think where you’re coming from is that you’re probably thinking Old Boy as comparable to films like Joker (2019), where the themes are shoddily explored but pretentious enough to get awards and praise, especially from edgey people. And Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite would be the equivalent of Spike Lee’s remake, where it better explores the same themes of Joker in a non-edgey, nuanced way, hence it winning the Oscar over Joker in 2019. But original Old Boy is actually the Parasite to the remake’s Joker. You’ve been led astray by people before, so I totally see why you’d think this way, but I swear to you this time it’s not just the edgey guys. 😂😂😂 If you can stomach the theoretical edginess of the remake, the original should be fine as well.

@@allyli1718 I don't think I said Korean acting in general was bad (that'd be very rude and like I said, I avidly watch anything Korean. Especially if I feel like crying!)... I also don't think I said that the remake was edgy / edgier... If anything, that might dissuade me from watching, as my main problem is I neither understand nor enjoy edginess just for the sake of it... But I am interested in the vision. And I can find entertainment in darkness, hence why I said I'd watch BOTH movies to decide for myself one day (: ... This way I would finally be able to decide if the brooding Asia obsessed teenager who told me Old Boy was his FAVOURITE movie did so just because it's a shocking movie, and it sounded cool to say that, or if it's genuinely a really well thought out and well made movie. And for the remake, I'm curious to see if it really is worthless, or if it is an enjoyable watch in spite of what the loudest people say (: ... But I chuckled at your Joker commentary... I did hear soooo many praises about it to just end up being very underwhelmed 😅. So yes, in that regard, you're correct that my scepticism is anchored in those repeated situations (:

One small thing - I really, REALLY appreciate the trigger warnings you put in all of these, it really means a lot to me that you care enough to do so, but do you think next time it comes up, you could add a warning for animal violence and/or animal death? (Especially when the animals are treated like pets beforehand) Of course, up to you, it's your channel, and I'm not MAD you didn't or anything, it just would've been good to know going into it. Either way, thanks for the great content as always, and hope you're having a good day!

What a coincidence I'm catching up on BMaaB because I learned of the existence of this movie recently from my students' textbook. I'm teaching English in Korea and one of the units in my middle school class' book was about hallyu. He did see spike lee's movies before watching this though. He mentioned it in the oldboy (2013) video he made. He acknowledged his bias against spike lee and said he kind of hated him. He told a story about how spike lee had screwed over an artist hired by lee's production company to make the posters of oldboy (2013), about how he (the artist) was not paid even the already small amount that was given to him because "it was the exposure that counts", but continued to use the posters (or at least, a version of them) for promotion and didn't credit the artist. When the artist tried to explain how this was an incredibly fucked up thing to do, spike lee denied everything on his twitter in a very rude way compared to how the artist had first approached him. Yms had mentioned that he was a very pro-art and creativity person in his videos about the lion king and kimba contreversy, and that must have affected his dislike for spike lee. Despite this, to challenge his (yms) bias he decided to watch some of lee's better films and then said something along the lines of "at this point I don't really hate him... he's clearly got some talent" and even points out how spike lee was clearly not proud of this particular project compared to other projects that he was more proud of or interested in making and how that affected the movie. I don't know if that makes him racist or he just prefers other directors or didn't like the fact that spike lee also had some faults and failures during the production of this movie. I don't know if he is a racist. I haven't watched the guy much just because I kind of moved on to other creators i was more interested in, and the fact that yms can be too critical and "logical" about things started to negatively affect how I viewed and enjoyed movies, simillar to how cinemasins has ruined movies for me. But it's certainly not because he doesn't like this one particular director.
@user-zo3cb4ce5t
@user-zo3cb4ce5t 4 месяца назад
@@mariasti8726 Yes I also watched the video, I know this. I misspoke about one thing: he'd watched 1 of spike's bad movies (miracle at st anna) before embarking on the oldboy review. all of his issues with spike concerning the stolen posters came after. The fact remains that YMS hadn't explored spike lee's oeuvre at all, despite touting himself as something of a film buff; and yeah he's pretty fucking blind to his own racial biases, since he very rarely has any overt praise for Black actors/filmmakers and is borderline dismissive of representation efforts in cinema.
