As an Aussie Boomer, I love Latika's interview and am also disgusted with Australia's Government attitude to Ukraine. We are becoming an increasingly populist country with a very superficial approach to world politics. I have contacted several MP's to no avail. If I talk about Palestine they all jump onboard.

More great coverage, thanks guys. As an Australian I am extremely disappointed with our mediocre support for Ukraine. Australia's Defence strategy and procurement policies and activities over the years have been at best dysfunctional and have been a mixture of "toys for the boys" from overseas junkets" , dismantling of local Defence manufacturing and Defence dept expertise, over reliance on consultants and confusion over strategic vision.

As a Tasmanian living in the South, I might be far from the action, but I've been following this podcast religiously since its early days as the ongoing crisis in Ukraine is something I believe affects us all, regardless of where we are. It's disheartening to see the lack of action from our government towards supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression. In times like these, strength and unity are crucial, and I stand in solidarity with Ukraine as should all Australians. Huge thanks to the Telegraph team for your insightful coverage. Slava Ukraini!

I have been arguing with the Ukrainian leadership in Australia to be more vocal and radical but they like to kiss the arses of the Labor party. This problem very serious and I plan to make a bigger protest outside Richard Marles’ office in Geelong . His constituents can vote him back in and the destruction of Ukraine can be on their watch

Australian here. I believe I have been listening essentially every day to this podcast since week 2 of the pod. Was very happy with our initial efforts but our military and political leadership has been completely lacking in imagination and credibility. I am a labor voter generally but may cross over if libs are sane on other policies and are clear they will do more for Ukraine. We can do more in the private sector and it would be good if the government was supporting trade with Ukraine, the Baltics and Poland in a major trade engagement effort that is both good business and helps deliver new tech and products that we have into Ukraine and its immediate allies.

I am a solid supporter of Ukraine and as an Australian, I wish we were doing more, i was outraged about the Tiapan helicopters not being offered to Ukraine, but the less said about Tony Abbott the better, he does not speak for us and I loathe hearing any suggestion of Abbott as a representative of Australia and lets not even mention the previous prime minister, a leader he was not. I am truely disappointed about the lack of strong leadership to stand up against the likes of Putin and not only provide leadership on the world stage but in providing leadership domestically of their people to unite them in the need to take a stand.

One minor quibble with Tony Abbott’s quote, as an American lefty: the supposed “Trump derangement syndrome” partially exists BECAUSE we’ve been frantically trying to warn people about Trump’s “Putin fascination syndrome.” Ronald Reagan would be spinning in his grave if he saw what Trump has done to his formerly staunchly anti-Russian GOP.

Aussie buying these submarines is the greatest betrayal of the Australian military in its history. The pie is only so big and these subs come at a detriment to all other branches of the military. Only $5 million a day for 33yrs that's all. These assets are so expensive even America can't afford to build them and any ways are unsuitable for the supposed task at hand. They are far to big. The draught of Chinese boats is 6mtrs. The draught on these boats is 12mtres. They are designed for the Nth Atlantic not, i repeat not for the shallow water of the Sth China Sea or around Taiwan. What a con job !
@FactCheckerGuy
@FactCheckerGuy 3 месяца назад
Silly. Any boats that Australia buys will have to be big to transit quickly from Australia to patrol zones in the East China Sea. Even the Collins class was very large for a conventional sub. Nuclear boats will be far faster and be able to stay on station much longer. The US currently supports about 70 nuclear boats in addition to its other armed forces. Australia's economy is far smaller, but it can easily support 5 or 6 modern nuclear attack subs.

US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland’s contribution to undermining the relations between Moscow and Washington is colossal, she put all her efforts into destroying the dialogue, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said, commenting on Nuland’s retirement on the sidelines of the World Youth Festival. "She should have used her knowledge about Russia on upbuilding, but she used it on destruction of bilateral relations. And, in general, I believe, her personal contribution to undermining the trust between our countries was colossal," the diplomat noted. "It’s a different story, though, that she is most likely not the only one or the mastermind, but, one way or another, she has become the face of everything that is happening around Ukraine right now." "She did not engage in diplomacy, she engaged in interference in internal affairs of other countries, primarily our country, Ukraine, Eastern and Western Europe," the diplomat said. "She engaged in implementation and forming of a destructive course - destructive not only for other states, but for the US as well, because it has led to a fiasco of the US foreign policy." "This fiasco is total. Zelensky rushes about, he is begging for anything at all, the White House denies his pleas. There is a total disarray within NATO," the spokeswoman noted.

Yeah, take Latika's views with a grain of salt the size of Gibraltar. She's always had a cosy relationship with the conservative Liberal Party here in Oz and pretty negative stances towards Labor, so her views are not surprising. The Abbott government was **the worst** government on every quantifiable metric Australia has ever had (and her interview was as softball as they come). Whilst they might have been right about putin and russia, the Abbott/ScoMo governments since 2013 have been the most destabilising, divisive and incompetent governments Australia has ever seen. The Albanese government might a better 'administrative' government, but they are far too timid in the international sphere and absolutely **are** dropping the ball on russia/Ukraine.

I’m an American who has lived in Australia for 20 years. There is little in the news about Ukraine. Really, all the news can seem to talk about is sports & recycle 2 day old stories from US papers. It’s hopeles! I’ve been listening to/ watching the Telegraph everyday along with many other European, Ukrainian & US sources for over a year on RU-vid & iTunes. I’m so embarrassed by my own country (US), I wear pro-Ukrainian clothing everyday, written about the war for our Greek Newspaper & presented on it at an academic conference. Great interview / chat Dom. As an Australian, a former ADF member & avid listener to the "Ukraine: the latest" podcast I am disappointed in the Wests dropping the ball (politically & militarily) with the support to Ukraine. The US Republicans (the House Speaker & some key House Republicans) are enabling Russian success on the battlefield by withholding military support/supplies & all for political gain for their Narcissistic Leader. I am equally disappointed in the fact that key European countries have had 2 years to mobilise their economies in support for Ukraine &/or expand their munitions manufacturing industries... but have failed & this has been exposed with what has happened with the US Republicans turning the tap off in the House. Every day I ask myself ...How is it that 30+ other members of NATO are not able to match (or at least get much beyond halfway) what the US alone could do re munitions supplies to Ukraine ? ...& lastly, yes, I too am disappointed in the Australian Govts drop in military support to Ukraine. ... If Russia is allowed / enabled by Western / Democratic nations to win (by playing the long game), then it will only embolden other such like minded dictatorships to "have a go" at their neighbours & as such get us all.into another World War ...if we're not already there. ....Slava Ukraini 🇺🇦

The Republicans are cutting off support because that's what the citizens want. Our border is under invasion, real life inflation is out of control. It's time to let Europe deal with European security for a change.

Sorry to say it but Australia is not doing the right thing at the moment. I am asking friends and acquaintances to write to their local MP to raise the delivery of Taipans to Ukraine. I have done it. My local MP wrote back to me and explained that the liberals are trying to bring it up in parliament. Putting our head in the sand is just as bad as some European countries do.😢

"The Australian Parliament released their report "MRH-90 Taipan helicopter: a quick guide" in 2021, detailing problems with the NH90 since 2005 and why they will be replaced. There the CPFH is listed as "the helicopter's estimated operating costs were $30,000 to $40,000 per hour, which is 'higher than those combat aircraft with sophisticated weapons and sensor systems' (p. 72). More recently, the cost has increased to $50,000 per hour." Australian Parliament website

Little ol Ukraine going up against what was supposedly the 2nd best military in the world and Russia doesn't control the entirety of a single oblast. That's amazing. Russia expects each EU ambassador to Moscow to explain what they are doing in the country and how they will organize their work in the future, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said. "We are waiting for them to explain what they will do in our country, how they see their functions, how they will build working processes. I think that they won’t get away with a single spokesman who will appear somewhere in Brussels and speak for all of them. Let them - each and every one of them - answer what they are doing in our country and how they are going to organize their work in the future," she said at a briefing on the sidelines of the World Youth Festival. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said earlier that he had invited EU ambassadors to Moscow for a clarification meeting before the Russian presidential election, but they refused two days before the scheduled event.

Let me start by saying that I strongly favor aid to Ukraine. I am not an isolationist. But I think that the podcast badly misunderstands US domestic politics. The podcast argued that the US "right" is fascinated by Putin and his claim to defend Christianity. I think that this is grossly exaggerated. Very few Americans of any persuasion admire Putin. To the extent that the US right has become skeptical of aid to Ukraine, it is because they perceive that Ukraine was integral in 2 efforts to impeach President Trump. They deeply distrust President Biden because he has used government agencies to punish and suppress his political opponents, including pushing the farce that the January 6 protest was an "insurrection." They also see that President Biden is opening US borders in violation of US law and find it preposterous to send money to Ukraine to defend Ukraine's borders while failing to defend US borders. The fundamental problem is that President Biden has not made the case to the American people that extensively supporting Ukraine is in the US national interest. Although I believe that it is, President Biden must make this case to people who do not reflexively support him. He has failed to do so.

How has Biden used government agencies to suppress political opponents, given that Trump broke the law? When talking about the right, primarily the political elite and media are meant, not voters. Bit cynical perhaps, but most voters don't seem have the slightest clue about anything except gas prices. Your examples are indicative of the fact that these voters have not succesfully made the transition into adulthood past puberty, and that their tribal bias blinds them. There is absolutely no indication that Biden uses the judiciary against political opponents, and breaking into the capitol to stop the transfer of power after a fair election is the textbook definition of insurrection. Also, Biden has not opened the border (though the prospect of the Biden presidency has increased the migration movement towards the US significantly), and there is plenty of money and energy to tackle both issues, if there is political will, which there isn't, as republicans also don't want to stop immigration nor fund the immigration agencies.
