Exactly why I love this episode. His expression is exceptionally good. You can see he feels sorry for her, that he didn't even think she could be a murderer, and that he is broken after realizing the truth. 7:33 Pure look of sorrow, Incredible.

That’s how good of an actor Hugh Laurie is. He can say it all with his eyes and body language.

House is always like that when expressing himself. When he's talking with 13 after she gets out of prison and she finally tells him what happens he doesn't say anything. 13 takes this as him being detached from the whole thing then throws a jab about how she's not surprised Cuddy broke up with him, except as viewers we get to see the other times House behaves in this manner and displays emotion entirely with his body and eyes without needing any words. The problem as mentioned is that not everyone will realise House is showing emotion in those situations, and to be fair the characters are written to miss that. The very few times House does show emotion with words are always extremely intimate and private moments with no others around, like this, like when he promises to kill 13 when her condition gets to the point it did with her brother, like when he tells Wilson the sacrifice made in the last episode isn't as important as spending the coming months with his [only] friend.

@@nlbadguy small, but IMO important, quibble, but she wasn’t a murderer. It was a tragic accident that she was responsible for. That’s what allowed him to empathize with her.

100% agree. Shows now a days just like to explain everything rather than, at least, show or better yet trust the viewer to understand what a scene implies by building the story and characters currently. and why would they? people are too blinded by flashing lights that they think a show is good because of "fantastic visuals". Fight scenes is the best example I can thing of. where every fight scene now is all special effects and break as much stuff as possible instead of having a good fight choreography.

@@creatip123 I don't know exactly what it is but Hugh has such a way with expressions, his face just hits the right notes when he's trying to convey a strong feeling, mainly empathy, pain, and anger.

They kinda do still make shows like this. Well, not sure if they belong in the same category but Better Call Saul is an excellent show with great acting and directing. But you probably know that one already. One you probably don't know about is a show called Mr. Inbetween. Not gonna say what it's about, but if you like Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, Mr. Inbetween is a must-watch IMO.

@@bassandbucks4282 If that were the case he wouldn't react the way he does when losing a patient, his emotions are as plain as day when he bonds with the woman trapped under rubble in Season 6's finale. When he loses her he is devastated, same with Amber, there are multiple examples of why he uses the "I don't care" approach is a defence mechanism, he cares too much about them but thinks showing it would make him a lesser doctor.

I agree. He was able to make us feel the weight in this scene and most of it was via his eyes. I just let out a heavy sigh to blow the 'weight' of the scene out. Masterful acting. Seriously. I don't say that lightly.

It's ironic how despite how great his acting is, he claims the most difficult part of his character was faking an American accent

She also played SGT Frankie Gonzales in Grimm - another character who was attempting to cope with a horrific tragedy that truly wasn’t her fault. Emily Rios’ facial expressions are so subtle but intense, and it’s amazing to see the absolute range of emotion she can deliver with something as small as shifting eyes or a stiffened jaw.

@@richa.s9912 Guilt is one hell of an emotion my guy. The girl said every time her parents looked at her it was like she had killed her brother all over again. Her parents might not have said anything, but the guilt she feels might be so intense and the sadness they have from her actions might make her feel like they wouldn't give her their marrow. Its very likely if she had gone back to them sooner they would have helped her, but when you've done something horrible that you cannot even forgive yourself for it, its hard to believe anyone would help you, let alone the people you hurt with said action.

@@richa.s9912 It's the pain of going through grief of your second child, the grief of being mad at your first child for the accident that killed your second child, then having your first child run away causing you guilt, and then finding out that your first child died as a way to punish themselves for the accident. It doesn't seem like her parents are mad at her or kicked her out. It sounds like she ran away because the guilt was killing her.

I can relate to that.

What I find really interesting about this show is that again and again, it comes by themes of peoples attempts to justify pain. From pain we inflict on ourselves, to pain our body inflicts upon us, to the pain we inflict on others, ever character struggles to try to find rational and justification for said pain. Again and again, the anwser we keep coming to is, there is no justification, pain happens no matter what, to the lucky or unlucky, to the careful or the carless, to the cruel or the kind, doctor or patient, pain comes and it doesn't have any justification other then it's there, so it is. House is a character who, on one hand, lives by this rational the most closely, that pain is random, it can't be controlled, sometimes can't be cured, only treated. He stands by this pretty firmly on a biological and emotional level. He is criticized most for being cruel when he doesn't have to or shouldn't be, but no one can deny that house is a rather miraculous doctor, he's good at what he does, and he's almost always right. HOWEVER, despite this seeming to be House being the most pure ideal of this concept, he is CONSTANTLY justifying his own callunuss and cruelty with his own pain. He lives to rebuddle every point, to scoff at every principle, and as much as he detests excuses, he lives for justification, lives by the idea that everything has a reason to it, or it wouldn't happen. He constantly justifies his own cruelty and selfishness through his effectiveness at teaching and saving lives. And both the series and House himself have to confront this several times and time again. Everything can be justified by nothing can be absolved. Taking responsibility for your actions when you can, because of care, I think that is the crux of what's great about this show and his characters development.

If she wasn't family she would probably be charged with Manslaughter by criminal negligence.

Maybe your parents shouldn't have used a child to watch a child. Too often older siblings get roped into childcare for children they didn't have themselves. I wish you peace.

That is an awful way to find out. I feel for you. I am also the third child, and I had a brother who died before I was born. However nothing to do with my sister - he had a severe heart defect and died under anaesthetic. I knew bits and pieces, and like you I always felt the family dynamics was not healthy. It wasn’t until I was in my late 20s my mother told me the whole story of how he died. She was only in her early 20s when it happened and 30 years later when she told me the full story the pain was still raw. My sister was only 4 and I think she blamed my parents for taking him away and not bringing him back. Guilt and blame is so often misplaced.

@@brontewcat even though parents might not have a direct role to play in the death of the child, a lot of the time they, especially the mother, cannot help but blame themselves that if they had done this or not done that the situation/outcome might have been different. Mothers are especially vulnerable to blaming themselves if a child is born with a congenital problem ("perhaps I ate something I shouldn't have" "perhaps I did some wrong exercise or slept in the wrong posture").

Same thing happened in my town with a person I went to school with. Girl I knew had 2 brothers and one of the brothers was swimming in the river while the other was supposed to keep an eye on him. Well he ended up turning away and not paying attention and the brother ended up going under the water and getting dragged down stream where he drowned. Never let children babysit children. It's never a good idea.

While I agree with your notion that he can come off as "cold"....... he's never been apathetic. One cannot be both apathic and sympathetic....you don't understand house at all if you ever thought he was apathetic.

Very good point you make, didn’t realize that.

He understands how it feels to have choices taken away from you. Stacy went against his express wishes while he was unconscious and changed the nature of the surgery he had on his leg. Maybe it worked out better than it would have otherwise, maybe not. The point was that he was denied his own choice of his fate.

i don't think he knows who her parents are. i think all that commentary was to get her to change her mind about killing herself and get her to call her parents.

@@takumi2023 Well he doesnt know at that exact moment but he has plenty enough options to figure it out. When it comes to minors doctors, police and other have a lot ways to legally figure out the parents. In some circumstances its even their duty to do so.

Both of them should have stayed in the control room while confronting her to observe for other lies.

The whole production team level of amazing, is, um, off the charts. How that last scene was written and cameras framed, with Hugh basically giving a masterclass in just what his eyes alone does to convey, is just *insert superlative here*

I've had *alot* of MRI's, literally wore ear protection once. That's it. You don't really need it. Of course it's a bit noisy, and uncomfortable, but personally I love MRI's.

When I was in it I literally fell asleep without them. It's not that bad.

In the 90's ear protection wasn't common. I had 3 MRIs and was never offered ear protection.

I saw a Nurse at a hospital as I was being discharged. This RN is talking to me and smiling cuz she sees my jaw drop when she walks in lol. All this time I am thinking "I don't want to leave, I am still sick! LOLOL". Never ran into her again , unfortunately. Folks, the issues with patients AND family members complaining about things they know nothing about is very stressful for nurses. Sometimes the only way they can cope wit it is through food. So next time you want to lash out at any nurse that "isn't doing things the way you think they should", back off! Dedicated to Jessica B. and all the other nurses from the guy in Room 214. Hope you loved the lunch I made...

I work at the ICU, one of my co-workers is just the most beautiful girl i had ever seen. Everytime we laugh about how our unconscience patients regain conscience just by hearing the sound of her voice

It would have to be a functional MRI-those put a special kind of glucose into the body that can be viewed by MRI machines!! usually they're performed to detect tumors, because malignant tumors use up a LOT of glucose. but neurons also require large amounts of glucose to function, so you can see which parts of the brain are most active during FMRIs! it's super cool!!

oh god never mind, i mixed FMRIs up with PET scans 😭 but yeah the blood flow measurements would show the same thing, because it'll tell you which parts of the brain are using the most resources!
