Ok so I am from England UK and forgive my obvious lack of knowledge here but we are led to believe here in the UK that Harlem is the roughest and toughest of places in New York and if you visit it you have a good chance of getting robbed or attacked. This seems lovely. I mean Die Hard 3 at the start is kinda what I'm thinking. Am I wrong,?

I'm a Cop in NYC and live in NYC. For the most part Harlem is in the process of gentrification. Rich/white/foreigners moving in and buying Brownstones like this; in areas that are getting renovated/revamped. But it's still by and large a cultural center for the African American community. Are you gonna get robbed? probably not. It's not the 90's anymore....big large gangs don't run the same way, It's a group of kids and adults who live in 1-5 streets in the local area who are dealing on the corner and just sitting on the street that do the violence. Rival gang shootings will take place in those areas, as well as near and around the housing projects. Best thing for normal people to do is just stay away from homeless people and blocks that are hot. Heavy on the stay away from homeless when it comes down to the subway system. They're the only ones desperate and mad enough to bother random people on the street. Random robberies happen just like anywhere else in any place, but its also not profitable to rob a person through force unless you're getting tricked/scammed. but the best thing to do is know where you're at and walk in populated areas. If it "Does" happen to you just give up your shit and call the police it's not worth your life. Other than that you'll be fine, Harlem in the 90's was bad. It's actually the Bronx that's overall the worst borough statistically, and Brooklyn in specific areas that are worse than any other block in the Bronx.

I'd say MrFunnyNacho summed it up nicely. I'm not a cop but been in NYC all my life (40+ years) and you can't always believe what you see on the tele. Harlem has it's spots and can be dicey (around 125th street and Lexington) but times are rapidly changing and new money is coming in as mentioned. I'd say give it a shot and check out Fredrick Douglas Blvd on a Sunday afternoon in summer. Nice place.
