Happy Tuesday everyone. Ever since I made my first heating pad, I have been making bean bag gifts. From games for adults and children to house hold items, these are gifts that people appreciate. I sent every kid off to college with the draft blocker and use mine every time I film a RU-vid video. The weights I use everywhere and recently took one outdoor for our bocce games. I hope that you give some of these a try. And the best part is that you use up your scraps and orphan blocks. Enjoy!!

retired nurse brain activated, lol. Fabric, thread and snaps used by you that are microwave safe would be lovely to list. I was a bit shocked to see plastic snaps. Kim snaps are meant to tolerate 60C water heat but don't know about microwaves. Also for gifts do you sew instruction label in or on bag and if so how do you create that tag/label. I sew for charity so interested in being updated if it means it could make creating them easier/safer without blowing a ton of money. Thanks

White millet from the bird seed store makes great heating bags. It is light, inexpensive and shapes to your body. I keep one in the freezer for a cold pack, too.

I love these ideas. I make lap robes and wheelchair lap robes (all with pockets) for my doctor to give to her homebound and hospice patients. I think I will start making some Tic-Tac-Toe games as well as pocket tissue holders to go along with each lap robe. Since I am in a wheelchair with a progressive spinal disease, and will eventually need similar type care, these patients are special to me.

For competition bean bags, they must weigh between 15 and 16 ounces. AND I do not recommend using beans, corn, or other grains for bean bags that are being used outside. You're in trouble if they get wet... Mold, deterioration of the beans, corn, birdseed, etc. I use plastic pellets. If the bean bags get wet, it's no big deal to leave them in the sun to dry out or even toss them in the dryer.

Where do you find them?
@NickUncommon
@NickUncommon 2 года назад
Eating cherries, or making marmalade, jam, cake, you produce your own, but I also found them on bio pages, as well as grape seed kernels, lin seed or strawberry seeds have been used by vendors of those heatable bags on christmas markets, I have seen. Small decorative sand kernels make a good filler for smaller baggies, too. If the tactile sensation is asked for, you also can use spelts. Making a sensory memory with pairs of bags with different fillings comes to mind. I want to make a weighted blanket, where you can switch out the little bags for different weights, so they can grow with the user and their weight needs.
@Bearleena

Cherry stones are the traditional filling for head pads here in Germany. Of course you can prepare your own by just washing and drying them after the fruit has been eaten, but I generally buy bags of them from organic stores designed specifically to be used as heat pillows. Cherry stones are great at retaining the heat longer than other fillings, but without getting burning hot.

Hi Karen in my bean bag but I call the ones I make “boo-boo” bags. From 2” square to larger size. I fill them with cow corn feed. When microwaved they do not pop or put out moisture. We keep them in the freezer so if the little kids need ice bag they get them and apply to the boo-boo sight. If you want a hot bad put it in the microwave 1 to 2 minutes. Thanks for all your videos!

My sister used quinoa and cinnamon for the heating pads she made. She also used flannel. Rather a neutral smell, but helpful to family members that were bothered by lavender. Of all the the gifts I've been given, this was the best loved, most used until my puppy decided he liked it, too and chewed on it.

Love the ideas. Some are great for reaching little ones tic-tax toe. I’ve made heat bags filled with feed corn. They heat and last forever. I usually make a double bag for the interior from muslin, then the outside from blocks, or decorative scraps. I love the idea for the weights. I usually use feed corn when ever possible as it’s cheap, doesn’t pop and retains moisture also.

Thanks for this video. Last year, when I found an old bag of rice at the back of the cupboards I was cleaning, I moved it to my craft room to use for heating pads. Almost 3 years ago, when I was making a large pincushion, I bought a large bag of crushed walnut shells at the pet store for around the price of two much smaller bags at the crafting stores. Apparently the crushed shells are also used for reptile bedding. I still have most of that bag left. I think it is destined to be used as pattern weights or tablet rests. (Fortunately no nut allergies in this house. We have issues with gluten, tapioca, turmeric, and other things instead.) 😀

If anyone is thinking of making and donating any of these wonderful projects to shelters, centers, hospitals etc where you do not know the recipient, it's best to avoid buckwheat as it can set off people's allergies due to being close to somebody's face or even small particles escaping through the weave of the fabric. Just something my supervisor let me know when I was beginning to make weighted blankets as a donation for the center I work at (our center happens to prefer rice as we have a laundry on site and a client-base prone to sharing their bodily fluids, so we use the bag and cover method as mentioned in this video. Rice is easily bought in bulk from Asian supermarkets so tends to be cheaper to replace after the heavy use they'll get in a center such as ours. You probably have a lot more choice when it comes to bags for personal use as you can choose what's right for you.)

I love the idea of making game sets now and of course the heat pad and weights idea. I’m thinking connect four and possibly chess. We also purchased a robotic vacuum to help keep our floors cleaner. Our problem though is one of our couches is tall enough that it tries to go under the couch, but too short so it gets stuck and begins beeping. I tried pool noodles previously but they get pushed under the couch because they move too easily. I’m thinking a draft blocker type project may be just the thing to solve our issue. These are all great projects. Just be aware if you have pets they may be very intrigued by the contents of a project if there is any sort of edible insert. I made a heating pad and filled it with flax seeds, then come home to find my dog had torn it open and the flax seed was all over the floor and in the carpet.

Former elementary school science teacher here. When I was learning to teach, the point was made that using beans (or other foodstuffs) for filling is inconsiderate of all those who struggle around the world to have enough to eat each day. It changed my perspective (not to mention some lesson plans!). Besides cherry pits, walnut shells, and sand, what else could we use as fill?

There is never going to be a full that solves every problem. Many people are allergic to nuts and seeds. Sand can leak through the weave, plastics and styrofoam are not good for the environment.

I made bean bags from soybeans. Stored it in a trunk which happened to have my stored wedding dress. A mouse chewed open the bags and made a nest in the wedding dress. What a mess. I washed the prices of m dress and made Bible covers. Redeeming a bad situation. Watch where you store the nags!

Oh dear this probably wasn’t good timing. There is a lot of discussion regarding our soon to be food shortage and promoting a video that uses food that we may desperately need in the next couple months probably is not a good idea. There are so many people who are buying lots of rice lots of beans and flour and freezing them.

@@jayneterry8701 I personally know some truck drivers and they are having a really hard time being able to transport goods because the cost of diesel gas. And at least here in the United States there have been a lot of truck drivers that have just quit. It’s going to trickle down. That’s why it has been recommended by these people called preppers to store flour beans rice and buy canned goods in case we don’t have any electricity. I know it’s sort of seems far-fetched but I don’t want to be cut short. I have about three packages of toilet paper from Costco lol and plan to go to a restaurant supply store and purchase a 30 or 50 pound bag of flour and luckily my neighbor gave me her food saver and who knows she might regret that decision. And I encourage anybody with animals to start stocking up on cat or dog food. There are so many people suffering from hunger that’s why it just bothered me to see this. I am buying extra fabric just in case that starts to be affected at least I’ll be able to sit at my sewing machine providing I have electricity!!! 🤞🏻😳
@susanmei9980

Please keep in mind that food stuffs don’t have un unlimited shelf life. Grains, flour, and nuts go rancid quickly. Beans and rice last a lot longer. But if you’re going to stash up, make sure you are rotating your stock, and don’t store up so much that it just goes bad and gets wasted. I put special stuff in my go bag at the beginning of Covid, only to discover it all expired in 6 months and was wasted. 😬 The small amount Karen is talking about using for these isn’t going to starve anybody. Worst case scenario, open the bags and eat the insides. 😂

@@jayneterry8701 I’ve already found a good deal on fabric it’s a company called “Sew yeah quilting “ they have a RU-vid channel where they do online fabric sales. right now on Saturdays their fabric is six dollars a yard five dollars for shipping to the US $20 for shipping to Canada. But if you buy at least five items then you don’t pay for shipping. I’m going to stock up a little and then I’m gonna stop because I lost so much money in the stock market the last couple of months Better to stock pile food than fabric
