Todays Satori Graphics tutorial talks about the design movement of brutalism or brutalist design. This is something that is really misunderstood by a lot of designers, and we will look at exactly why in the video itself.
Are you someone who confused brutalist graphic design with 'anti-design'? Because for some time that was me too. Brutalism has it's foundations in functionality, minimalism, and the raw essentials of what a design should be. Anti-design on the other hand is more punkish and dysfunctional. And as said in the video, I do prefer a combination of both movements, and conventional design; but moreover that all of these things are just tools that designers use.
If you found todays video on brutalist graphic design enjoyable or useful, let me know in the comments section and drop a like on your way out. Subscribe to stay updated to all of my uploads and until next time, design your future today, peace ✌️

Thank you for this! Please make more of this! We would like to learn more about different styles, philosophies, categories and "genres" if you may, of graphic designs. This is coming from a beginner designer. The context and historic background is a chef's kiss! This is so informative and an easy watch, well we could research more on our own, just the main ideas, I mean. Thank you!

This is basically a rehash of graphic design from the '90s and early 2000s (with some '80s thrown in) when designers were becoming more comfortable with using Adobe software. David Carson, grunge, techno-design, skateboard aesthetic and DIY "zines." The only thing missing is Xeroxed art and torn edges. LoL

Using the correct form of graphic design is similar to choosing the correct music for a setting. You may find playing Sex Pistols - Bodies as the bride walks up the aisle does not suit the occasion .... but on the other hand it could go down a storm!

My understanding of brutalist design (as it applies to architecture, anyway... though I think the same idea can be applied to visual design) is that the different components which make up the entire structure are not hidden away or subverted but allowed to own their own space. Basic geometric figures are used in creating these spaces which, in their turn, are inhabited by functional elements. The intentionally bold juxtaposition of these geometric figures as they serve their respective functions, both within their individual spaces yet also as a part of the whole... that's what gives brutalist design its particular flavor. Contrast this to minimalism, which at its root is an Occam's razor, less-is-more sort of principle. Brutalism, on the other hand, is essentially a distillate of minimalism that allows basic design elements to fully bare their essences while at the same time achieving a bold aesthetic statement by contrasting these elements to one another.

Thanks for the vid ! I dont see antidesign as a teenage version of brutalism though, I'd say anti design could bee seen as the child of brutalism but I think it is too much thought to be compared to an angry teenager, plus brutalism can be silly sometimes...! What do you guys think ?

A time and place.... it all started with the decadent movement and then the futurism; the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th European movements were a melting pot of new ideas, extremes and experimentation, what seemed chaos was actually the continuation of what started a couple of centuries before with the enlightened movement. The major difference between Brutalist and Antidesign is that the first is a moment in traditional sense and like all the other movement arched across all the arts, Antidesign is just a spinoff of the 70’s punk era, that apart from music and a bit of fashion didn’t have much to it; we may argue how punk visuals have influenced the successive periods, however can’t really say that punk culture and ideals have influenced that much, if they ever existed, take as an example Vivian Westwood, started on the Kings road and developed to a major fashion brand, not exactly a prime example of anarchist ideology. Unfortunately, IMO, movements have died with Y2K, Punks were the beginning of the end, the 80’s and 90’s created the last concrete attempt to a movement even if it didn’t have a name, a manifesto, it was the ideal of embracing and celebrating differences. I short brutalists have a manifesto, Antidesign doesn’t.

You have to be careful passing on these definitions. Brutalism was never really a thing in graphic design. Anti design isn’t really a thing, there has always been mavericks that fought against the grid - David Carson, Johnathan Barnbrook for e.g. a healthy thing that you were on the edge of and should push- it’s good for people to understand movements- when and why but to see them as points on a ladder through time. You’re on that ladder further up- what do you want to deal with and what do you need to learn from the past? That’s yours rocket fuel. If you understand the concepts then that what you fight with and when you’re finished fighting and stand back, that’s what it looks like. Just understand Modernism and read the early books on grids and be careful not to get caught up in the current anti design etc categories, honestly, it’s a bit of a misunderstanding. It’s probably too vague but hopefully that helps!

I sat watching this whole video thinking the same thing. I try not to be overtly negative but this video, in its attempts to definition brutalism with sweeping declarations such as “brutalism usually uses this composition, or features these colors” totally missing the mark on a conceptual level.

@Satori Graphics Ok! Thanks for the videos. I wanted to ask because you have a weird blooming effect. The image is not really sharp, and that contrast a lot, when you're switching to and from screen captures. Hopefully, the content itself is always excellent and insightful! Thank you again.

Thanks for the video - i didn't know modern brutalist design by that name before. I find both styles A Game, but modern brutalist design might be a bit better, maybe because I associate it with architecture now. You often see graffiti styles "Throw Ups" now - does this design also fall into one of the categories?

I dont agree. To be good qt brutalism you would also probably be good at doing basic comfort design. I think it's more of a ladder. If you can perfect assymetry and rawness arguably harmony and symmetry you have to be equally aware of

I love brutalism, but it is rearly a good choice for commercial design projects. I often see it used by creative agencies or freelancers on their website, but i’d argue it’s one of the worst places to use brutalism. As a designer you need to show you skill to non designers. Brutalism is a very difficult style to get right and doesn’t really speak as well to non designers. And anti design had no place in commercial design. It’s cool, as art, but if you use anti design to promote and event or your business you sre surely negatively impacting your designs effectiveness
