I was planning to buy the 4k, after this video I will get the standard blu-ray! This transfer is like terminator 2! Full of teal and sound effect change!
@@WhiteSilverback I have no idea. It always looks like crap. I no longer buy any blu-ray before I see screencaps first. If it's slathered in teal, I won't buy it. I'll even stick to a DVD, if I have to.
Bought the Burton set and they look Amazing. One thing that really popped out that I never noticed before is that Joker’s suit in the joy buzzer scene is actually pinstriped and not a solid purple. I did find the skin tones a little over saturated at times in the first movie though.
Well Olivier, do you have this new edition ? You can write what you want but the result is what you see and I surprised myself with this colorimetry too. This is not what I prefer but believe it or not, this HDR is identical to my comparison.
Keaton's Batman is the scariest imo. The lighting, cowl, and overall design of the suit often make him to look scary af, especially when the eyes are in shadows.
This is dreadful. Whatever SDR conversion settings you're using the colours are way oversaturated and favouring teal and pink. The actual disc looks far more natural, nobody's skin is blotchy red and The Joker's makeup certainly isn't teal.
Holy HDR, Batman!!! Those are some inky black levels. Also looks like WB decided to change the aspect ratio from 1.77 to its theatrical 1.85. This studio hasn't done that since they stop making LaserDiscs.
6:59 says it all. The level of teal in some of these scenes is borderline ridiculous; it's as if these guys have some issue with studio lighting. Can't they understand its of its time?
Jimm Needle I agree! All the other movies look how they should, Batman returns, Batman forever, and the dark knight trilogy all have the correct color timing, but for some reason they ruined This one.
Teal & orange all over it.... it takes away it's original look... why but why every movie today has to look the same with this HD Filter teal and orange thing!
Love what you're doing with your comparison videos! Really helps me decide when a 4k upgrade is warranted. This is one of my all-time favorite movies made even better in 4k. Keep up the great work!
The standard Blu-ray looks much better IMO. The blue tint on the 4K changes the look of most scenes and not in a good way. The saturation and contrast are way too high. Everybody is freaking orange.
@@Mymoonization I just watched your entire video again...these alterations RUINED the film. Gotham looks like shit now. This obsession with "inky blacks' bugs the hell out of me. It's obvious from the opening shot that Gotham is supposed to look foggy/smoggy. It adds to the mysterious look of it. By upping the contrast and applying that damn blue tint to everything they completely wiped away the original atmosphere of the film. Stupid.
I was almost sold on this, but I'll stick with my Bluray thank you very much. I don't like the faint blue tint on some scenes, the white highlights are too bright. A little over saturated on some of the bright scenes too.
Why not just enjoy and own both then ? That's what i do. I own every version of Batman 1989 & Batman Returns since there my favorite Batman movies ever made
@@Mike-t5r9q Afraid not, the 4k releases of Batman and Batman Forever as a bastardization of these movies. The blue tint ruins the picture and is not the intended look of the film. To add to that no option to have the original audio. No thank you I am sticking with my blurays.
@TheHolisticVegan Fair enough i can totally respect that. My favorite version of all Batman 1989 & Batman Returns is the original dvd release from 1997 looks super crisp with the original film grain and the original audio
ME: "Damn, Batman, why so blue... is it 'cause your parents died"? BATMAN: "No. It's just me in another My Moonization comparison video". 😔 Man, I'm watching this 4K 30th Anniversary edition right now and, guess what, no blue tint! I'm sure ol' Moonie will ask if I have the "new version"... answer is yes(what other 4K version is there?). Some might also tell me me that my TV isn't "calibrated" properly, and try to make me feel uncool because I don't have a billion dollar entertainment set-up. But, hey, at least my set-up makes the movie look like it actually takes place in Gotham and not Tealtown, USA. 😉 Either way, I don't think people should put too much stock into these kinds of comparison videos, as everyone's displays are different and a movie image can't be judged on one persons opinion alone. This is not THE definitive take on the 4K quality of this movie, people. Sad, because videos like this will probably detour some people from buying this otherwise AMAZING movie with an AMAZING 4K transfer. At any rate, judge for yourself consumers. If it means anything to anyone, I wholeheartedly recommend this version for any fan that's on the fence as far as the quality is concerned. Plus, if your display shows up "too blue" I'm sure it can be adjusted, somehow. 🤷🏼♂️
@Nolberto Cales, no problem. I found no problematic issues with the color on my set-up. But, it could just be an issue with certain systems and how they're calibrated. It should always be determined through the eyes of the beholder. Like I said, I thought these remasters looked great... to each their own, I guess. I sure hope you are able to enjoy them as I did. If not, then I give you full permission to hunt me down and beat your Amazon refund outta me! 🤣👍
First do you have this new edition? Maybe your TV is badly calibrated. Because the result is identical to what you see on my channel. Everything is comformed. However you should also know that this version contains a lot of blue hue and a slight saturation and relatively black tones in some dark scenes. Anyway I'm sorry Man !
@@Mymoonization Yea i have the new release, arrived yesterday, my Tv is pro calibrated , its a 2018 panasonic oled and my player is the panasonic UB9000 , I'm seeing a Teal tint in the video, the Joker makeup looked teal instead of White, but no need to Apologise mate its for Entertainment Only as you state..
4k version looks awful. The blue filter look stinks like someone has their RGB levels badly adjusted the whole time. Also, skin tones look horribly unnatural in the 4k. Hate what they have done to my favorite movie, I'd rather watch my old laserdisc copy over this new 4k version.
I don't know, I think the original color balance and sound design is superior. It matches the tone of the film, this doesn't. I wonder if they'll release a more authentic version.
Good lord that teal wash along with a huge splash of over contrasting to a point where a lot of the mid tones are nearly blown out!🤦♂️ All the actors look like they’ve been in the sun too long, I’ll stick with the subtle, elegant tones of the original!
Eddy Wells but hope u won’t mind the audio changes they’ve done using Dolby Atmos. For some reason they didn’t include the original audio as an option for fans who prefer it. Example they changed the sound of the gun shots and explosions. I don’t mind it though. I always found the guns shots sounding fake and odd.
This might just be one of those instances where I'm better off holding onto the regular Blu-Rays. Some shots in the 4K version looks really off. Then, Oliver Harper mentioned and showcased the new sound effects and that sealed the deal. Thanks but no thanks on the 4K versions, I'm afraid.
The 4k has some improvement but I'll stick to my blu-ray because batman is not teal 7:46 😂 I wish this was as good as beetlejuice or batman returns transfer
06:00 look at the radioactive light bloom around the curtain and Alfred. The 4k version is not quite right in some scenes. Very strange, some shots are still warm on the 4k despite having a teal tint.
I really don't understand how anyone can stand the blue saturation of the 4k version. It butchers the original film, I don't care how much clearer it looks. The Blade Runner final cut did the same shit.
There is something that I will never understand, what is the true color palette according to what was filmed, I say from the original master tape ?. There are big differences between a vhs, dvd, bluray, and 4k
@@Mymoonization But nobody tells me what is the original color of the master tape, how will you know from vhs to 4k they look very different, so which is the closest to the master tape?
Well the problem is that for years people got used to seeing this film with different colorimetries and no one complained. But since the arrival of Blu-ray with the HDR mode everything has changed. I think this version is definitely the fairest one because it's a dismal film noir and with a touch of blue that I think makes sense. But that remains my opinion of course.
From my recollection, this version is definitely closer to what I saw in the theaters during a mid-2000s screening I saw at an older theater. Before they closed down, the last few months, they did screenings for a ton of movies using older prints they still had. This movie was a tad faded, and had a few areas where it was starting to turn a bit pink (film breaking down due to age), but there was definitely a blue tint on the night scenes that I noticed wasn't there when I got the BD release. I will say though, this release seems to amplify it a bit, and it's likely due to the HDR mastering.
LOL ….Horrible!! I think in most scenes the original looks better. All they did was add a contrast filter and a color palette to the whole movie. ABSOLUTELY NO DETAIL DIFFERENCE! You can't add detail where there is none, but by increasing the contrast you can make it 'appear' sharper. And looking at it they didn't put much time into the filter because some scenes (when batman is holding the crook) the detail in the eyes are gone because he is too dark (contrast is too high). WB did a bad job.
jchuck316 u are just going off this RU-vid video and u are wrong first off with hdr on it doesn’t look nearly as teal as this video and there is a lot more detail then the Blu-ray
I like the 2013 better its how I remembered it watching it on VHS that over color grading can ruin it in some scenes. Same problem with the Matrix they are using this over saturated green for the newer blu ray release, Thank God , I have the original DVD which has no color grading
Don't forget that these comparison vids are not thst accurate as these vids on you tube are not actually UHD. It loosely gives you an idea but it's not truly faithful. I can confirm first hand thst both batman and batman returns both look stunning
finally watched it on 4k and irs not tinted like Terminator 2 is in every scene. People are missing out. Theres a bunch of blue lights in the cave if you pay attention.
I think both movies Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992) looks terrible in the new 4k version, I think Tim Burton used a Turquoise Teal - Greenish color filter process, I don't remember seeing that color tone in the original format in theaters back in June 1989, so why is Tim Burton changing the color format on 4k? The right color format I've seen release on VHS TAPE, DVD and for the first time on BLU RAY in 2010. I'm disappointed, I think both 4k movies I own will end up in the trash. I'll watch the 2010 Blu Ray Version. :( :(
Everything about 4K looks great and sharp, also the sound not so bad either. But the only issue I have with this 4K thingy is that when Batman brings Vicki Vale to his Batcave and the Batwing scenes, it looks so bluish and teal lol. It's very uncomfortable to watch after so many years of watching this movie with its original color. Batman is black not blue or teal lmao. Smh. When it comes to sharpen, 4K wins, but when it comes to color, original definitely and obviously the winner, no doubt about it. For sound, I'd say 50/50. I like some parts of 4K sound and some parts of original sound as well. Overall, I prefer and stick it to the original. Sorry 4K, thanks but no thanks.
Never thought I'd say this but Batman vs. Robin looks a thousand times better than this in 4K. Whoever thought "I think I'll crank up the teal" should be fired. (I know, it's usually just an overall white balance thing gone awry, but still).
It actually damn look good on 4K but to bad I have to get original version blu Ray version because it come with all 4 classic batman movie, Batman 1989, Batman Return, Batman Forever and Batman&Robin. It much cheaper with all these 4 movie as well on best buy. I wish I get 30th anniversary edition. Is there any 30th anniversary edition on original blu Ray by any chance?
In the "I'm Batman shot, his left eye disappears on this artificial "upgrade." Have to winder if the new,1080p BD gas the sane issue. Would prefer seeing a comparison of the new vs old BD, without the gimmicks
Blu-ray is the better choice for me and is true to the original… darker tones exaggerated sounds…with slightly better pixels without changing the color of the movie winner: Blu-ray edition
Bilko Prince I agree too. I thought the 2009 Blu-ray was just an upconvert and didn’t look HD at all. Glad they remastered it from the original negatives
Great. The Blu-ray included in this package is mastered from the new 4K scan. That means it has more detail than before, but also the new color grade (without HDR). It also includes the new Atmos mix.
Whoever was in charge of the 4K color grade should've been fired. The teal / blue is so heavily offensive I don't know how it was ever approved. I'm sure Tim Burton wouldn't have. Awful awful. If a new 4K is released I'm going to throw this into a nice orange / red fire.
It was tough for me to nail down a decision about which is better. Some shots got warmer in 4K while others got a cold greenish look to them. Take 3:06 and 3:31 for instance. In these shots, the color saturation is too high on the 4k release. These people are more orange than the president. Then look at 3:55 where it looks like the color is dialed down a bit on Michael Keaton's face from what it was on the 2013 Blu Ray. At 4:08 there seems to be a green tint added to the frames. I don't like it. At 4:39, Joker's face gets a cold greenish tint in 4k while at 4:54 the shot of Bruce training gets warmer colors in the 4k. Then there's the shot of the Batwing with the moon in the background at 7:58 wherein I think the 4k shot is better in every way. Ultimately I like the higher resolution frames of the 4k but the changes in color break it for me. I'd use the 2013 Blu Ray as my main, but I wouldn't look down on anyone who differs.
Your comparison looks NOTHING like the colors actual 4K disc. What kind of SDR conversion are you using? It’s giving everything a terrible teal overcast that just shouldn’t be there.
Garbage prefer the older print more the way it's supposed to look they've changed a lot of sound effects to like gunshots and explosions which sound worse imo.
4k looks terrible. I think most of the comments are from people that just want to have something that says 4k, but really doesn't make a difference in fidelity. The color grading looks awful. It's like the people behind making the 4K edition never heard of going back to take a look at the color grading of the original film. That's what 4K transfers should be, a faithful reproduction of the original theatrical release source material. Even if the negatives turned to dust, there are plenty of still from the film that was distributed in various forms. They just said, make it have the modern color grading and applied it to the entire movie and called it a day. This was definitely not done scene by scene. As for the sound, at the very least they should have given the option of having the one that they had on the Blu-ray version. They didn't have anything to do other than timing and adding it as an additional track. This was a lost opportunity.
