You, sir, are a born teacher. Excellent vid dude. I picked up the drums 6 years ago, (I need to put them down, there're very heavy) and had hit a wall, skills wise, until I found your tutorials here. I am reborn. Salutations.
When you go on tangents to show how you can use the fills in other concepts, I love the complete satisfaction on your face every time you hit it perfectly.
Thank you *so* much for posting this! That herta lick is still kicking my ass, but this has been so helpful in showing what the heck I should actually be doing :)
with the herta the last one is on the floor tom. for a while i was trying to do snare hightom snare lowtom snare hightom snare lowtom but then realised its basically impossible to get back to the snare in time from the floor tom. great vid! ...also, with regards to the speed, id recommend to anyone having trouble - make sure you move your right hand to the next drum whilst your left is still there for the last hit, might seem obvious but when i realised that it really helped me to not rush it and mess it up!
Amazing, really good teacher that goes through the stuff technically at various speeds without being patronising. I'll try these again in a couple of hours thanks so much! Subscribed, liked and favourited.
Yeah, don't worry, I get that ALL the time :) Practicing with a metronome is a great way to get solid time. The BEST way though and the more fun way is to play along to your favourite songs. This improves your timing AND teaches you all of the un-written rules of drumming to music. The metronome can then be used to perfect your timing but isn't essential, in my opinion. No, counting out loud is not essential but it certainly helps with the reading! Good luck! Rob
I've looked at a lot of drum tutorials on youtube and this one definitely made me smile the most. You're funny. An excellent lesson too as you've just taught me how to play this song properly (i.e., thinking in triplets) after about a year of playing it incorrectly (i.e., just hitting stuff and hoping). Back to practicing then. Thanks :)
You're welcome, mate. Just get the song up on RU-vid and use a free online metronome to find the bpm. Type "free metronome" into Google and you'll find one. Cheers! Rob
@Graveltongue Thank you sir. I'm really pleased you found this video so enjoyable. Might I suggest a daily dose of vitamin DRUM to get your rhythmic health back together again...I have NO ideas what that means but I'm pleased you're back into your drumming anyway. Happy drumming to you! Rob
@0509killer Good question. It took a good couple of months of solid practice to get it up to speed but it can take more or less time depending on where a drummer is at technically. Thanks for your interest in what I do! :)
You're right about drummers ears pricking up when hearing the Herta. The first time I heard this song, I basically turned into Spock. Without the logical side effects though.
@HuGeEO1 Well, it certainly won't hurt to have a go. Take each part slowly and see how you go. Let me know how you get on or if you have any questions! Rob :)
@Lisa17989 Thanks for the love! The drums on this recording are high in the mix and played super clean by Grohl so are quite easy to transcribe. Also, my "drum ears" have developed over time and are now quite good at picking out drum parts. This would have been impossible for me to have worked out years ago though so I guess it also comes with experience. Thanks for your interest! Rob :)
I'm a guitarist/singer and just happened to stumble upon this in the related field, but I got really sucked into this and ended up watching the whole vid. Really interesting, amazing teaching skills Rob! Been wanting to buy an electro-kit for ages now, so I'll be back after my next paycheck ;)
hey !!! grandioso video , siempre tuve un problema con esta cancion ... y sin duda creo que ahora me sera mas facil ejecutarla .... una felicitacion por tu trabajo desde mexico =) ....
Outstanding video man!! This song has been my bane for years until I actually took the time to look it up, and your lesson is by FAR the most comprehensive and professional. The hurrrtah!! hahah... :P Now when I gig with my band we always start with this one and blow the crowd away. Thanks!! You should do a drum lesson of Danko Jones' Full or Regret before I beat you to it :p
@najretuek Well, I've been drumming for over 20 years now and learnt the Herta about 10 years into that. I think it took me a couple of weeks to get it fast and smooth. Everybody is different though, a beginner might have to wait a year to get this stuff down whilst a pro would learn a new lick in just a day or so.
Love all of your video's, only been playing a year and have had no... 'real' lesson, your videos have helped me allot. Please, if you have time, could you do some paramore lessons? Maybe misery business? And the great escape by we are scientists as I can't find a tab for it anywhere, struggling on understanding how the chorus goes, everything else is gooood. :)
@ctuth Practice, practice, practice mate....come one, you must have known this was coming! ;) Oh, also try to maintain a loose grip as tightening up is part of the speed problem drummers face. Hope that helps a little. Rob
hello! thanks a lot for the great lesson, I am much much closer to get it right now...I would like to ask a favor since you turned out to be a good teacher... could you please make a video explaining the very last drum solo?? (the one that goes along with the guitar solo)
@JacksonKovacs I actually show you how to play the main groove to Assassin in my eBook which you can download from my website...but I might do a full lesson also. Assassin does kick arse! Thanks for your interest :)
@danbomber46 But he doesn't on the recording and that is what I'm teaching you in this video. Also, music videos cut together different parts of the song and so aren't always accurate records of what drummers actually play....believe me, otherwise my job would be MUCH easier! :/ Thanks for your interest and input! Rob :)
Wtf... O_o I figured you'd be somewhere in your mid or late twenties for playing 20 years already and still thought you looked young for your age. But over thirty.... Damn, man, you have it good! :D
@DrumsTheWord Damn, I really had that coming haha.. I managed to get it to the songs speed now, but only on snare or toms... I keep messing up when I switch. Back to hard solid practicing then, thanks for your quick reply and keep up the good work!!
Depends on what you're taught. I say triplet as I was taught to count 8th and 16th notes as 1-and-a or 1-e-and-a for 16ths, so it separates them instead of using the same counting terms for all rhythms. As long as you're counting the rhythms correctly, who cares ya know?
Excellent lesson and well spoken. 4 stars. I took away a star because you didnt mention a few of the famous drummers who use the fast fills besides Grohl. LoL.Good job all around though. Thanks.
Damnit I just paid $4 for this from onlinedrummer! Didn't realise you did the notation for free. I was playing the herta part starting with LH on the snare yesterday I must have been doing something wrong.
