It did work. Possessing Freeburg was just a means to an end. The real question is whether Freddy possessed a living Freeburg or if Freeburg died when Freddy possessed him, because it certainly looked like it.. And if that's the case, he was a Freddy kill and Jason simply sliced a walking corpse in half

Transitioning from being awake to in a dream is usually seamless within the series. I suppose this is to emulate what it feels like to fall asleep in real life. Many of the victims in the series never realize their asleep until it's too late.

Also, it's never too late to show off a new Freddy ability! Although in a previous movie he did control someone to jump off a building (via puppetry).

It happens in the second movie

Jon Snow Freddy has been able to possess many of his victims. However, he only does so if they will be of use to him in the real world, without causing any harm to himself. In Freddy's Revenge (The second film), Freddy takes control over a young teen when he puts on Freddy's bladed glove, which results in Freddy having the ability to pass into the teen's soul, and back into the dream realm as he pleases, until the teen metamorphosizes into Freddy in the halfway mark. It is implied here that Freddy took control over Freeburg by simply burrowing into his body, then into his soul as the caterpillar you see in this clip.

2 years and nobody pointed out that the worm (which was actually Freddy) got inside his body in the dream. Freddy's made people move in the real world according to his dream, but this is at a level where honestly he's an idiot for not doing it sooner. Of course, Jason also runs during one attack and doesn't immediately paste Freddy in their fight, so this movie isn't exactly canon.
