Thanks for the detailed video! I now know that this process is NOT for me as I will almost certainly ruin the pieces AND hurt myself. 😹

Got the Chessnut air waiting for it to arrive, you are one of the reasons I bought it, after seeing the Chessnut Pro I am still happy with the air since its smaller and I feel like it is better for my small room. Anyways keep making content your are great.

Thanks for the comment. To be frank, the Air is brilliant and probably makes a lot more sense for most people especially when it comes to size, practicality, and price!

Could you have used a drill to drill through the iron/lead and part of the wood? I mean using a professional arm drill. Or do you think the pieces are too fragile and/or the weights will come loose when drilling 12mm and 9.8mm holes?

My view is that it would be very difficult to drill through the iron (I have never seen any modern chess pieces that use lead as a weight given the cost of lead and the toxicity in handing during manufacture) without damaging the wood. I don't own the equipment, but it might be possible to use a fine hot air gun (e.g., those used to melt solder to remove electronic components from a circuit board) and direct the heat at iron weights, while protecting the wood (e.g., with something like Blu-Tac). This will soften/melt the glue used and probably make it much easier to remove the weights. I later used a "hot water dip" method that aimed to do the same thing. I think another RU-vidr has carefully used a soldering iron to heat the iron weights to melt the glue.

@@chessnoob64 Thanks for the feedback and the heat-gun suggestion! I ask this because most shops don’t offer any solution or charge quite a premium for just DGT sized holes (and no weights at all). I was contemplating buying a similar Leningrad set as shown in a YT review. 165 euro’s, or 300+ with dgt holes. Ideally you would want a ring of weights around the sensors, and holes no deeper than needed (1 cm?). So most holes freely present in standard pieces would need little adjustment, I might have a look at tripple-weighted pieces as they will probably contain lead and be much easier to drill.

@@chessnoob64 With the weight separated you could perhaps drill a hole in the weight for the sensor and then glue the whole thing in. It doesn’t even need to be drilled in the center in case of a “leaning” piece, like a grazing knight. I might even have a look at other heavy materials, but some of these are ultra-expensive. A lot of effort.

I own around 5 sets of chess pieces. Generally, all the weighted pieces will use iron or steel weights rather than lead. The "triple weighted" pieces simply use a larger weight (which takes more work and risk for the manufacturer as the body of the piece will need to bored out). It should be noted that you won't be able to use metal weights around the sensor - iron or lead - as it will interfere with the sensor enough to make it unreliable. I learnt this the hard way when I initially tried using fine lead shot as a way of increasing the weight of the pieces. More than one person have reported using tungsten putty as a solution, and it seemed to work well for them. This is a fairly expensive solution, but potentially worth checking out. The density of tungsten putty is approximately the same as metallic lead.

Well done Michael. Won't the clay shrink over time and cause issues?
