Part 2 of a series where I modify my Zagreb '59 Series chessmen with Chessnut sensor chips so that they can be used as a premium set of chessmen on the Chessnut PRO electronic chess board!
One of the challenges with modding premium chess pieces is the removal of the installed metal weights. I've found a great method to remove the weights with minimal risk of damage to the surface of the chessmen!

Well done. Now apply the proper thickness green felt and you are done.

A couple more steps! The clay does shrink as it dries. Once the clay has dried enough, I'm going to use a filler putty to make the bases completely smooth prior to applying the felt!

@@chessnoob64 tell me more about the filler putty please, I’m also doing the process

@@ThisIsTBChannel - I bought this off Amazon: www.amazon.com.au/dp/B09H7C9D6W Something like this - basically - a dry wall repair kit. Wood putty probably works fine as well.

Do you happen to know if I have to do the wrap on plastic pieces also? Thanks for this video I really needed this!
@chessnoob64
@chessnoob64 Год назад
The plastic wrap is to protect the varnish used on the wooden pieces. Assuming that the plastic used in the pieces isn't damaged (e.g., melt) by scalding water, then it should be fine. This is assuming, however, that the plastic pieces themselves don't have some sort of finish/paint that will be damaged by hot water.

I’m planning to do this pretty soon. Are you happy with the clay brand you got? I found the same brand on Amazon. Did it work well or is there a different product you wish you would have used instead? Also, I’m interested to hear about the weight of the pieces considering there is not added weights. Are they too light weight? Thanks

The clay is fine? I didn't select it specifically for its brand. It works as intended. The weight overall is still light. It's better than equivalent wood, but I'd need to fill the void regardless. A potential alternative would have been to use a quick set epoxy resin, but this will need to be done very carefully to avoid a mess and to avoid a mistake. There would also need to be some system to hold the pieces upside down while setting, and being absolutely sure that the sensors are in the exact correct location. With clay being malleable for some time, minor adjustments to the position of the sensor are possible after packing the piece.

@@chessnoob64 thanks for your quick response. I guess I was asking if the brand you got worked fine because I read reviews online that after drying it tends to crack. Would you say the final weight of the pieces is about the same as the original pieces that came with the Chessnut pro? Or lighter? I just ordered the board yesterday, I really can’t wait to get it!
@chessnoob64
@chessnoob64 Год назад
@@gza864 - the final weight of the pieces will be similar to the original pieces, but likely a little more. There is also better weighting of the pieces towards the bases. The original pieces are all wood, with only a hole drilled for the sensor. As the clay is denser than wood, filling the void from the metal weight with clay means that this part of the piece is denser, and thus, has more mass the if the region were wood.

How did you get the sensor to stay put inside of the hole?
@chessnoob64
@chessnoob64 Год назад
In this video series, I used clay to pack the void/hole. This held the sensor firmly in place. However, as per my final video, I don't recommend using clay given the problems with mess and shrinkage, requiring a second pass with a filler. I suggest using an adhesive putty like Blu-Tack to fill the void. This is what I used for the White king which I had to redo as I damaged the sensor. Information on this is in Part 5. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dhVCbO-OSF0.html
