If you are like me - a beginner with a basic sewing machine some tutorials out there are a bit scary, when they use the lingo and insist that you have the proper size fitted mannequin you get a bit discouraged. Tutorials like these are absolutely perfect. Direct language and to the point. :) just what I need.

I've never attempted such a big alteration without patterns and tearing my hair out, but no time for that now. I don't have anything like that in my stash but you should be able to use this tutorial to make it smaller 😊 (I'll keep an eye out at the thrift shop for a boho dress to downsize for a new tutorial though!)

Yeah!!! I actually love those grumpy lacy gramma button downs with the awesome big crocheted collars because I bring them home from the goodwill and use this technique you use to give them a fitted look!!!

Thanks Delaina =O) The sleeves were actually too long so I simply them chopped them to my desired length before reattaching them. (I have loads of refashioning tutorials over on my blog too: awesomesauceasshattery.com/

As I had to chop the sleeves and make them shorter to fit & the original sleeve width was tapered, the new length fit perfectly in the new arm hole so there was no need to take them in =O)

Use whichever you're most comfortable with. I grew up using the metric system so usually use cm as I have no idea about feet & inches 😄

Depending on how the lining is attached you can either remove it & use the same steps to downsize it then reattach it or, if it's only attached at the shoulder seams you can try to downsize it while it's still attached. I usually remove the lining completely & simply wear a slip under the dress if needed 😊

Because I also shortened the sleeves (by chopping them off at the top/shoulder area raw edge) they ended up being the correct width for the arm holes 😊

I was a beginner when I made this video 😊 My tutorials are usually my first attempt at an idea & I'm always learning too😄 You can simply skip that step, the final result may not be as comfortable if the sleeves aren't re-aligned with the new side seams but give it a try, refashioning is all about trying new things & revamping old into new to you ♻️ if it doesn't work out, make it into something else!

what if the sleeve hole is not the same with the dress body arm hole?

I need you here in person to help me fix these two new vintage dresses. My heart is broken that they are too big and are not giving me the hour glass hug I desired. My top is more oversized and my legs are small ...so it's difficult to find a perfect dress that hugs my curves right :'(

+T. Thomas I have exactly the same problem! My chestal area needs A LOT more space than my lower half which means that dresses always need to be refashioned :( on the plus side, it means that my tailoring/sewing skills are improving by leaps and bounds =O)

Bought a cute dress but the armholes are to low showing my bra on the sides. Is there an easy way to fix this without having to resew the whole dress? Would someone who does alterations be able to fix this?

Casey meyers If it's a sleeveless dress you can easily shrink the armholes using the technique in the video (stitching down at an angle) or add a coordinating fabric panel to each armhole to fill up the extra space - a tailor would most certainly be able to fix it =O)
