Mike, I'm so glad you could witness this most unique and rare 2 ship arrival using with just one lift. And not just any ships. The most famous old school classic laker, and one of the most well loved 1000 footer. ...the largest ship on the Great Lakes. The weather was great. The moon only helped create the neat atmosphere! Starting at 3:35 it was funny to watch that lady say to her hubby "I'm not walking in that water. You go right ahead". Beginning at 6:10, we get a really nice view of the flying bridge. Night helps bring out all the equipment. I've posted this before, but thought it appropriate to post again for any new boatnerds. I grouped the items by category. Thanks for producing this video. It was stupendous! Common Devices/Features found on the Flying Bridge. Also called the Monkey Bridge. This area is the upper most level (roof) of the pilot house. VDR capsule (Voyage data recorder. Like 'Little Black Box' on an airplane) AIS Tx/Rx antennae (Automatic identification systems - transmitting and receiving) Satellite C/F77 Tx/Rx antennae, VSAT (TV, telephone, facsimile, data services, Internet) Miscellaneous Antennae (VHF, SSB, possibly even CB, other line of sight radios) Automatic Radio Direction Finder Antenna (Loop) Magnetic compass (inside fiberglass dome) Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) Antennae DGPS precision position finding equipment Radar scanner(s) attached to the radar mast Radar Reflector Anemometer (wind speed), Weather vanes (Wind direction), Temp Sensors Sound Reception Device Loudhailer speaker/horn Ship bell/s Ship whistle/s/horns Multiple searchlights Daylight Signaling Lamp General area lights The mast leading up to the ‘Christmas Tree’ (navigation lights) Lightning Rod called dissipator/s Security Cameras Video Cameras (Navigation/Docking Assist) Various halyards (ropes) connected to the yardarm (cross posts) to hoist flags Ship Nameplate
Wow you really know your stuff 😮 I never knew there was so many things on a flying bridge sorry I'm just amazed I'm just getting into ships and don't know much about them but just amazing.
Offroad, thanks for stopping by to watch the video. I think you’ll really like learning more about Duluth and the ships. Hands-down the best documentaries I’ve ever watched about Duluth are these two, Lost Duluth 1 & Lost Duluth 2. If you want to learn about the ship canal start at exactly 19:33 in Lost Duluth 1. I have linked these videos below for you. These documentaries tell the whole story of Duluth’s beginning and shipping industry, it’s absolutely fascinating with the photos and videos. Lost Duluth 1: www.tpt.org/lost-duluth-i/video/lost-duluth-i-38108/ Lost Duluth 2: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8LtrsYVWezY.html
Katherine, that was definitely a rare moment for me to see those two ships together. Aerial Lift Bridge only lifted once for both of them.👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️
Wow Mike, just wow. Great view of Duluth before the main show. Such a historic ship in the Arthur M. Anderson. Then the giant PRT. "A downtown skyscraper that floats." I'm going to watch this multiple times. Awesome!
I’m serious! I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to top this ship video! Ever cool thing can together! The two ships! Famous ships at that. The sky and moon were awesome. It was night! Both did salutes. Signal lift by the bridge for both!!!!!!!!!⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️
Wow! What a wonderful and rare sight to behold!! Between the beautiful night sky, the city lights, and the history of these ships, stirs emotions I didn't even know I had. Beautiful video Mike, thank you Sir!
Mike, definitely your best video to date, no over exaggeration. Beautiful calm water, pretty sky with the cloud covered moon, and the top two ships on the Great Lakes. Wow, what an amazing evening
I’m incorporating more artistic shots into my videos. The more you do something the more you learn. Somethings will work, and some things will not. We will figure it out together. I had such a great time with this video. The ships are the best. Thanks for watching my friend.
Hello Mike watching this on twofer Tuesday here in cold rainy Bismarck. I guess these two are probably ranked 1 & #2 in popularity on the laker vessels chart. Big Hoss is the biggest vessel on the lakes, and the Anderson’s historical respect is off the charts. Your photography is really beautiful showing the skyline of Dtown at nite. This really was one of the best videos you have ever had, much respect to you!
David, these ships really impressed me for sure in person. They’re elegant, powerful and beautiful all at the same time. Thank you for watching. Have a wonderful Tuesday night.👍⛴️
As always you go above and beyond in knowing the history of the ships . I have watched one other video and you are tops. Im in Milwauke, Oregon and find this educational and interesting. Thank you.
Another great video Mike. These two ships are like Great Lakes royalty. Seeing them at night with all the hillside lights twinkling around them made this a magical video. Thank you.
2 BIG ships and only 1 lift ... AMAZING Mike ... PRT is such an enormous boat, I would so much like to see it in person.AMA is a beautiful old school style boat ... THANK YOU Mike for this video!!
The Tregurtha is roughly ONE FIFTH of a MILE long!!! It carries almost the equivalent of SIX 100 car, (100 tons each) TRAINS worth of bulk material. Thanks Mike! That’s truly “THE BIG TIME!”👍 Sam Towson, MD
The two popular ships are coming through Duluth Harbor at the same time 😊! That has to be the first time ever. What a beautiful and gorgeous night! The moon is amazing with the painted sky. Mike, a great amazing video in Duluth! Now shipping is at a standstill 😢.
Applause for the two beauties with such great conditions to welcome them. Just when you think you've seen your best video you, Mike, out of yourself. Amazing narration. Applause for Mike.
Just what the Doctor ordered, a doubleheader of awesomeness. A perfect evening for a perfect video. Mike, it just doesn't get any better. So many postcard shots. Thank you for making my evening, prior to the Phillies game. Peace!!
Wow Mike!! SPECTACULAR JOB!!! Thanks for what you do....bringing the wonderful visual and delightful narration to all of us who love the magic of our Great Lake and her vessels!!!
I always feel a smile coming on when I watch your videos! I like the little "warble" that the PRT put on its horn too. Thanks for the spectacle and the history lesson. Keep those feets dry and Happy Tuesday!
Thank you . ❤ enjoyed 2 ships tonight. I have feeling they were holding bCk on the ships horn and the lift bridge because of the time. Nice to see the crew acknowledge the crowd 🎉
Well. That was just super special. I'm so glad you were able to get down to capture it! Maybe I just hadn't noticed it before but it seems like in the last couple of months the people on the piers have started cheering the boats. I don't remember that happening before. It didn't happen when we were there in May even though it was crowded. I think it's fun, though!
Jodi, there have been many situations were two or three ships go under the bridge with one left. When have you ever seen the AMA leading the PRT, and they both come in under one lift? I knew it was a rare situation.
I agree with your opening comment of No Doubt this is the coolest video you have done with ships. This night video under moonlight captured the show perfectly. Great work Mike.
The PRT is a beautiful ship in its self but nothing can compare to the shot you did with the Anderson and the moon , it was breathtakingly beautiful I would like that as a screen saver hands down. Awesome job Mike just awesome.
Wow! This was an awesome video! I have a new respect for the Anderson. I didn't know it was the last to contact the Edmond. I'll think about that everything I see it now. I'm from Ohio, and it makes me proud that the Anderson, and the paul r were built in ohio. Great job on this video! It was awesome!
Diane, I noticed you had a few words about my talking when I record videos. Remember, there are many ship channels with ZERO talking, actually, 99% of them have zero talking on RU-vid. I wanted to do something completely different from the other channels. I approach my videos like a live news report, so there's always talking like a live reporter does. I chose to do something different from any channel in Duluth. I'm sorry to hear your recent comments about my channel.
@@vibewithmikeI have seen so much Ships arriving to Duluth on Videos or Livestreams. But i never see these two beautiful Ships arriving directly behind under one Lift of Aerial Lift Bridge. Historical Arthur Marvin Anderson and the Queen of Great Lakes Paul R Tregurtha. Awesome. Thank you so much Mike. ❤️❤️👍👍👍🫡
@andreasgroeller1083 I still can’t believe I saw these two super famous and popular ships come in hundreds of feet from each other. Unbelievable moment.
J, this was like having Christmas early. Can you imagine how excited I was looking out and seeing the AMA and PRT that close together on their way in? It was absolutely unbelievable. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to replicate the situation again. Those two ships and that close. Both coming in under the same lift!⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️
Hi Mike another great night video, fantastic view on the Duluth skyline and the harbor and a classic and the biggest laker come in, its a pleasure to watch the video. By the way yesterday we had a ship colission here i Germany between the British general cargo coast freighter " Verity " which sank and the Polish registered bulker " Polesie " from Polsteam which already also has been in Duluth. One sailer died an two are still missing
Hey, Hey Capt. !!! You have a beautiful night going there and two awesome ships coming in!! Nice view from the North Pier Lighthouse. The Anderson is such a majestic ship. All that history(if she could talk). She is always an awesome sight to see!! The PRT is a great ship too. The steam is really cool. Glad that it is steam and not smoke. Love watching the turn. The Captain definitely makes the turn look like a very simple thing but it must take years of practice. This was really great Mike!! So glad you could catch both of these great, great ships for us. Hope you have a good evening and I will chat later. 🙋🚢
That’s the first video. I have done with two ships. It was totally awesome. It was unbelievable to see them in person like that. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to capture a video like that again with those two specifically. I’m looking forward to some of the snow and ice videos. I think a lot of people from warmer states will really enjoy them. I hope everything is going great for you in Saint Paul.
@@vibewithmike it was totally awesome!!! I have to be honest with you and say that I am not looking forward to the white stuff but I know it will make for fun videos.
Now that was cool! Great job Mike thanks for sharing with us. I remember hearing about the ship that went back out looking for the Fitzgerald. Please keep the great videos coming. Watching from Athens Georgia.
Hey friend! I lucked out being able to get this on video. I still can’t believe both ships came in and once under the bridge! There are the two best ships out there and they came in next to each other. Not sure I could have scripted this any better. The moon, ships, sky, etc. it was awesome!
Hello, I'm using my wife's RU-vid channel. My name is Stuart. I grew up about five blocks from the East River in Queens in New York which led to the Long Island sound. I saw many a ship go by when I was at the beach or fishing. I've never seen your channel before until I think it was today. He got some great videos. I didn't know that that one ship was 1,013 ft long what do they ship in these ships? I know you said Cole and something called techononic pellets or something okay just I love your channel. Very interesting. I live in Naples Florida now grew up in Queens in New York and New York City. Great stuff. Great stuff.
What a wonderful comment. It is a pleasure meeting you. This comment is absolutely fantastic. I was in Naples, Florida a few years ago and I was in New York City a few weeks ago. Take a look at this video that I think you’ll be interested in from a few weeks back. It’s a livestream I did from Brooklyn. ru-vid.comlqGPbUI_Ygc?si=FQ-_y3cxwxqRlDpo
Michael, I hope all is well in the UK brother. I thought I would have more snow videos for you at this point but the conditions are still warm here in Duluth Minnesota.
I think having this happen at night really set the tone. Those ships are absolute All-Stars and so wonderful to watch. Thank you for watching the video my friend.⛴️⛴️⛴️
Ruth, thank you so much my friend. I’m glad that you really enjoyed the video. I sure enjoyed being there in person recording it. Those ships are absolutely amazing.
Damn man this is awesome! Duluth at night is really peaceful! The Anderson used to be my favorite ship. Might still jointly be with the mighty Munson! The PRT is also mightily impressive! Wow indeed... They really are incredibly agile for such massive vessels! Hope you have an awesome day Mike! 💪💪
I seriously don’t think I could write a better script for how it went down. Everything came together. I still can’t believe they both came under the bridge with the same lift from the bridge. These are the two best ships out there in my opinion. How awesome to see them back to back like this!👍⛴️🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦
@@vibewithmike Its pretty incredible man! This is really rare and special and you caught it on camera along with the majestic moon and clouds, coupled with those city lights!
Sixteen thousand ton cargo capacity, incredible! What many people not of the martime world don't realize is this, hulls come with different drafts, (dept below water) different shapes ,full displacement hull, semi displacement hull etc. Ships that are capable of transporting massive amounts of weight such as sixteen thousand tons are full displacement hulls with deep drafts and usually large in size. Full displacement for reasons that the ship was designed for. The word displacement, 'displace' something, this, that or... In ships it means the draft displacement of water by weight, meaning, the amount of water replaced by the ships hull that's below the surface of the water known as the ships draft, must not exceed the weight of the ship and all potential cargo the ship will transport to keep the ship afloat. If that displacement of the entirety in weight of ship and cargo is more than displacement of water in weight, the ship can't stay afloat, the ship will sink! 🧐
@@vibewithmike Thank you for the comment Mike. Just add this to the comment, weight between salt water and fresh water isn't equal in weight. Fresh water is heavier. That said, cold Pacific Ocean salt water weight is not the same in weight of warmer Atlantic Ocean salt water! This being the reason why where the two oceans meet, the two salt waters don't mix, infiltrate into the other, thus keeping one ocean colder than the other ocean. Colder Pacific Ocean salt water will submerge below the lighter Atlantic Ocean salt water, then begin to disipate within a transitional zone. All so critical in designing of ships and their intended use will be. I truly loved that part of your history lesson in the telling of the Anderson's effort to assist the Edmond Fitzgerald in that ship's desperate need of assistance. It's my understanding, however, it may not be accurate, the Anderson was a sister ship in design to the Edmond Fitzgerald. Curious to know if this to be true. Imagine if so, then we all in a way through your lense, just witnessed something very unique indeed, especially knowing decades have now passed since the tragedy of that tragic stormy night. To see a ship of its kind to the Edmond Fitzgerald in a new century enter the Deluth MN. harbour. Love all your videos of these very special vessels that surface the heavy waters of the greatest lakes on earth, The Great Lakes! 🥸
Hey John. Good stuff to ponder. I love this type of activity. The PRT can carry up to 68,000 gross tons of taconite pellets or 71,000 net tons of coal. The Anderson 23,000 tons of ore. My mind goes hay wire trying to fathom this amount!
Hey, I really appreciate the comment. It means a lot. A person that stops for a few moments to write that they appreciate some thing. Trust me, it means a lot and I super thank you for it. I’m glad you enjoyed the ships.⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️👍👍👍
Ralphy! I’m always happy to hear from you and know you enjoyed a video. I don’t know if I’ll ever get these two ships back to back ever again on video!👍⚓️
This is an older video and I’m so glad that you watched this because it pops up and reminds me about it. There was nothing cooler than watching this man. Did you see this from the other day? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cQ3gCuHfg2c.htmlsi=ff3gVqV0riPiwxdw
Ace, the Anderson has so much history. It’s one of the most beautiful ships out there. Did you see this video tonight ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-__zAOtq9L6A.htmlsi=E6qXu7ts-SIpAAoL
Hey Mike! What a beautiful evening you had there! What time was this? What a nice crowd along with the ship crew. These videos always put a smile on my face. Thanks for sharing the moment with these two fine ships! The light upon the water was really beautiful and the ships looked happy.😊😊 Duluth is such a special place. And we will keep saying that when the snow flies too! You might have to take us for a ride on the ski lift and check out the view. 😄
Can you believe they’re talking about a winter mix with some possible snow this coming Sunday in Duluth ? We knew it would be coming. Regarding the ships, this is probably the coolest video I’ve ever recorded. Both of those ships are my favorite and they came in right next to each other, a single lift for both from the Aerial Lift Bridge. As rare as it gets for ship watching fan.
Guess we should appreciate that nice green grass you showed while walking around near the Tug Bayfield. It's going to change to a nice shade of white pretty soon Mike!@@vibewithmike
Wow, how cool was that!!!! Thanks for hanging out and sharing your hobby with us! I am learning so much about ships, who they are, and what their purposes are. Thanks for giving me a new hobby as well!
Elizabeth, this is for sure my favorite ship video that I’ve ever recorded. How can I top this one? It’ll be tough because of the rare situation. I hope everything is going great in Tennessee, snow in Minnesota on Sunday possibly. Maybe the first ship snow video?
@@vibewithmikeOh canNOT wait for the snowy ship videos!! I'm back in coastal NC and it is COLD!!! hahahaha, probably hot compared to your temps in MN!!
It could have been planned. I’m not sure. I have never seen this before and it took my breath away. Unbelievable to see those two fan favorite ships together like that.
YERT Mike… this is Rhonda Lou from Sparta Tennessee…. I keep missing your live stream. I think I’m signed in to watch them. I’m not great at this cell phone technology stuff.
The best two ships out there! They came in together! One lift from the bridge for both! I still can’t believe it! Funnest ship video I have recorded personally. 👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️

Beautiful footage once again Mike. The night lights make the local area pop...and the terrific ships make the story come alive. Thank You ! 👍 p.s. Is there a fee to this app ?
Jim, thank you so much for watching the ships. There is a free version of the app. The app I use is called “MarineTraffic” and it has a blue ship for the logo. You will really enjoy it! You can research vessel names and follow ships all over the world. I hope you enjoy! All the best friend!👍👍⛴️⛴️
The PRT is about as long as the Chrysler building in NYC is tall. Can you imagine laying the Chrysler building on its side on floats in NY harbor and maneuvering it around the way they do these Lakers in Duluth?
Thanks for your reply and for your posting in the first place. I don't want to beat it into the ground but, since the PRT has a square flat stern, how about standing it on end next to the Chrysler building? New Yorkers would just walk by it like it was nothing. "Yeah, we see this kind of stuff every day." @@vibewithmike
