Spent nearly 30 years in Marine Corps aviation working on jet engines. Never saw one throw a compressor blade, but we had one once in an A-4M at MCAS El Toro circa 1982, that had a 2nd stage turbine nozzle guide vane (the fixed vanes before the turbine) fail and go into the turbine. Sheared the outer inch or so off of all the turbine blades. The pieces exited the turbine case and side of the aircraft at about the 10 o'clock position. Fortunately this was on takeoff roll and just after brake release. The other fortunate happenstance is that it didn't spit the debris at the 5-7 o'clock direction, which would have been right into the wing fuel tank. Aircraft was repaired. Replaced plenty of engines after ingesting a bird. Smelly.

For anyone unfamiliar with these tests, The purpose or goal is to design an engine that, when it fails for any reason, can contain the failure, blow it out the back-side to reduce damage to the fuselage (main body of the aircraft where the passengers/your amazon package are). my favorite is the bird test. they shoot a dead chicken out of an air-cannon into a running engine to see what happens :DDD

That's not quite true. Engines are designed to keep the effects of most likely failures 'contained' which means no part of the engine can escape radially (falling out the back is allowed). This is what you see with bird and ice injestion, and the single blade separation. No engine is designed to keep disc failures and multi-blade failures contained. These types of failures are deemed to be unlikely. But they do occasionally happen.
@tyson9419
@tyson9419 2 года назад
Fully. I've seen pics of prop failures and they sometimes shoot a blade into the fuselage. Pretty scary.
@jstephenallington8431
@jstephenallington8431 2 года назад
The look on the engineers faces when the blade separates, they jumped, and you could see them actually wince just the slightest bit. You have to imagine just how many hours they put in attempting to build something that will NOT fly apart like that, and watch as one actually does. In contrast, they literally built this motor to fail just like what you saw happen. Again, you can see the relief on thier faces when it failed as they had planned it to. Amazing.

It’s interesting how some people treat brands like sports teams and ignore the technology. Although, we do make all of Rolls Royce seamless rolled rings in Verdi, NV. To my knowledge, all turbine and rocket engines have them because nothing else is strong, consistent and balanced enough to withstand those forces. I don’t even have to look to know there’s probably a mixed origin for the parts found in many top performing products because being competitive means you take your advantages wherever you can find them (right, wrong or indifferent).

The GE9X weight about 23000 pounds, has about the same power as the Titanic had and it's diameter (at its widest point) is just under the diameter of a 737 cabin. It costs 43 million US.

Beautiful technology. I was doing a study for 7 years in mechanical engineering and I was always thinking like how in earth it is possible to end up with this stage of invention. All over the world you find high end inventions. Almost in everything country. Now I am curious about the proces of every invention. First it was handmade tools and in this stage humans were developing for years new inventions. Only in this stage it was very limited comparing to the stage of inventions in the time of machine making machines. Love this kind of information.

Fair play to the engines integrity with the blade off, but also a huge pat on the back to the engineers for the pylons holding that massive trauma.

Imagine the pain of seeing the result of years of engineering get purposefully blown up. Not to mention the thousands of hours of machining on the titanium and inconel parts of the blisk. Painful.

No pain at all. The engineers planned on the outcome. If the test had failed then they would have been disappointed.

@@tazman572 have you worked in product engineering? From personal experience, failure testing is bittersweet. Hello there! On engineering, these test are among the more important steps we make on a project. Knowing the limit we can measure safety guidelines and features, like limiting power and speed at a range below the 100%, providing safety and durability at its finest. It literally worth on every dollar applied for it. No matter the tech, it only becomes viable when the user is safe :)
