*_Former Boeing Everett.... where 777 and GE9 mega engines meet..._* First time I saw a GE9 series engine, it was already on a triple seven (777). It looked like many other jet plus engine configurations I have seen in the past. The true scale was not obvious until I saw a GE9 series engine on it's cart ready to install on plane. I walked up to, then onto the cart. Engine is enormous, front main fan over 11 feet in diameter. Add surrounding cowling, and the engine is too large to fit in a normal house. It would stick through attic and poke through the roof. They are that big. Not only are the huge, they deliver record levels of thrust too. In excess of 115,000 pounds of thrust. The 2 GE9's on a tripe seven give the plane almost sports car performance. They can go from V1 on runway, to V2 and then near vertical like a fighter jet. Truly an amazing sight with even more amazing sound.... Pure Power. GE would make bigger engines, but they have to wait for airplane companies to make planes capable of using them. Right now from 737 to 787 the engines are at maximum diameter to safely miss scuffing on runway, or sucking up asphalt. *_GE9x is larger in diameter than the Fuselage of a 737... yeah it's that big..._*

@@Discoveringme123 Another way to compare size is the engine is larger in diameter than the fuselage of B-737. Yup, it's really big...

At 4:07 and 6:00 I see that the testing control boils down to a throttle taken from a medium sized boat. I guess it simplifies the graphics. Pushing this control one way or the other conveys the 'power' of the testing to us watching the video. It is like "Yeah, FULL SPEED AHEAD!"

its all fly by wire anyways, there really is not throttle control per say, digital servos

When the Challenger shuttle broke up in the air in 1986 , why didn't it have parachutes? Instead, it fell and crashed into the sea with all its crew

Is this an ad for GE? Everytime "GE" is said I wanted to take a drink. And the mid-video jump to afterburner and rockets? Pick a lane.

I got to work on GE solid metal stage one blades while at Airfoil Textron Lima OH. in the early 90's as lead polisher, one of those jobs that you look forward to go to work

7:46 this is not an afterburner. This is an aerospike engine.

I lived in Mukilteo for a few years, from there I could hear the Boeing test lab firing up the big GE's at paine field for boeing... INSANE, then when you get close like the airport

Layperson here. Why do commercial airline jet engines not have blue flame out the back? Something about afterburners?
@steventwiddy3402
@steventwiddy3402 Год назад
Commercial A/C don’t need afterburners on them like military do, afterburner basically dump raw fuel into an area near the exhaust to get a military fighter get loaded down into the air faster and to be able to get higher speeds
@satyris410
@satyris410 Год назад
Most of the thrust of airline jet engine comes from the big fans you can see when you look in the front. about 75% of the air these fans push through does not mix with fuel in the centre of the engine but in fact bypasses the core and is simply propelled rearwards, hence the name high-bypass turbofan engines. You can think of it as the engine burning fuel in order to spin the fan which powers the plane. Afterburners, also called reheat, are a method of extracting more work from the already fast-flowing air in military jets. They are not efficient at all but that is not a concern when the mission dictates speed over all else. Because airliners number one goal is fuel efficiency, they would not spend 3x the money to go 2x the speed. The experiment with Concorde showed that while there is a place for time saving that supersonic flight brings, it is not economically viable to deliver it on a large scale. Private jets provide time savings in not having to wait around in airports for your flight to be called, you can simply arrive at the airport, board, and it's wheels up. It's the one thing money cannot buy - time.
