I always remember the Scots racing onto the pitch at Wembley, tearing up the place. Still miss the home championships though.

A fantastic fixture, been to quite a few being Anglo- Scottish ( Dad was English- Mam was Proud Scottish), always wanted England of course but if Scotland weren't playing England I would always want them to win their game. In the 70's growing up I loved watching Scotland, half the team were Leeds players so I had that connection. Some fantastic players on both sides but Scotland had some world beaters, Bremner, Lorimer, Jordan, McQueen ( RIP), Harvey, Stewart, Eddie Gray, Frank Gray, Bobby Collins. (Graham, Parlane, McCluskey, McNiven, McAllister and Liam Cooper in later years.) England had Jack Charlton, Reaney, Cooper, Madeley, Hunter, Clarke, Cherry, so the training sessions at Leeds were extremely fiesty and competitive. Norman Hunter once giving a recap mentioned they were sometimes broken up by the Rest of the squad Welsh, Northern Irish and Republic Lads, mainly Sprake at 1 bit or Giles. Reminding them they had a big game the day after and take it out on the opposition but Revie would be laughing on the sideline. Great times and stories of Proper Football, a truly great Rivalry.

1977 at Wembley the mounted police were checking that we had tickets, by 1981 they were asking we needed tickets...if not their horses would eat them!

We did them a favour in 1977, wembley was getting re-turfed directly after that game so we reduced their costs by removing the old turf for them but do we ever get any thanks for it ??

Not sure about that. I was at the game. Went back to the stadium on Sunday where they had a weekly barrow market in the parking lot. Tunnel end doors were wide open. Three of us walked up the tunnel and looked all around. The terracing was littered with debris but there were dozens of groundskeepers working all over the pitch. Two of us were still wearing the tartan, naturally. One of the workers saw us and shouted over asking if we'd brought their sod back. it was an amazing sight and eerily silent considering the constant and glorious din of the previous afternoon.

We were rubbish in the 1970's. Even though we did beat Scotland 5-1 in 1975. Whereas Scotland had a brilliant team with some of the best players in their history. It's no surprise that Scotland qualified for the 1974 and 1978 World Cup tournaments, while England didn't even qualify. Scotland should have reached the semi final in 1978 at least. They had a team full of world class players, yet typically they lost and drew to the teams considerably weaker than them, yet beat the mighty Dutch team.

Scotland were 5th favourites for the 78 World Cup! The 3-2 win over Holland wasn't a surprise,the lose/draw with the other 2 were!

@@loftlegacythere was a cartoon in the daily record the day after we beat Holland, it showed Ally stepping off the plane at Glasgow, with the enscription " Now we are only going to cut off your ears" alluding to the higher punishment he was in for prior to beating the Dutch of having his goolies cut off.

60,000 times five pounds = 300.000 pounds. I think that covered the cost of a set of goal posts. The way the English commentator says "for these people " is so racially loaded. For clarity, read up on the exploits of Lord Kinnaird. A Scottish baron who did more to create and develop the sport more than any Englishman. Also the passing game was invented by the Scotts. The book called "A century of great soccer drama" by John Cottrell details the development of the game in fine detail.

It’s the Man Utd “numbers count “ in this fixture…hard to fight back when 60,000 descend on Wembley but slowly and gradually the English started to sort it ….in the 80s jocks used to get ambushed from the moment they crossed the border ….Carlisle was the start and by 1989 the boot was on the other foot …we used to face up with the hordes who stopped in Blackpool on the way home and settle scores …..

Lot of truth in what you say. Main reason being Rangers fans stopped following in significant numbers. Rangers fans made up the original Tartan Army and transferred their usual behaviour away from home to Scotland matches. You only need to look at the archives for the catalogue of fan misbehaviour. It changed significantly after the 1986 WC. By that time, the English firms were in their pomp and it just wasn't that organised in Scotland. Have to say though, there was little sign of Scotland fans getting set upon at the last Euros. Quite the opposite. Times have changed of course. But Rangers haven't. Rarely, if ever, do travelling fans get trouble. Numbers dictate that. Never less than 5-10k at every away match outside Scotland. At least 10k in Leipzig recently. And more than 100k for Seville. Nearly 200k in Manchester. Nobody in the history of football has travelled like Rangers. Even Liverpool and MU don't travel in those numbers.
@den264
@den264 10 месяцев назад
@@robinmcewen3286No one in history destroys cites like the Rangers fans. Yes the behaviour of Scottish traveling fans improved immensely after the Union Jack mob decided to stay away. Irrefutable proof that the disgraceful violent behaviour of Scottish fans was in truth Rangers fans wearing tartan Tammies. Good buy and good ridance. We are getting on just fine without your "support " Please stay home and support your favorite team England, when Scotland proudly takes the field in the World Cup in Germany.

How can England control Scotland and it all go back to Bannockburn - Edward II was not English, and England has not been ruled by an English monarch for over a thousand years!
@den264
@den264 10 месяцев назад
Edward ll was not Anglo Saxon, but of French decent, like all the Plantagenet Kings before and after him, right up till Tudor Kings came to power under Henry the seventh of the Lancastrian house. The throne of England stopped being Anglo Saxon after the battle of Hastings, when William the conqueror defeated King Harrold. Then the Normans ruled , then Plantagenet's, then the Tudors, then the Stuarts, then the Hanovarians, then the Saxe Coburg Gotha's, and finally today we have the Windsors. The Stuarts have ben the closest to a British monarch since King Hardold.
