Preach! Certainly been at the top of my list of pet peeves for at least the decade or so since my first on line encounter. My son and his wife recently completed a complete tear down & rebuild of their home that included an open concept grand foyer, living/dining kitchen with 9ft ceiling hardwood floors. Focal point of the living portion room pf the space is of course, the fireplace, above which is mounted a very nice 75” Sony on a full extension swivelling Kanto bracket so they can watch while prepping on the 4x8ft centre island. Very pretty space, but the sight lines from the overstuffed L-shaped sectional are sub-optimal, and the acoustics do little to bolster my opinion of the Sonos Arc and Sub’s performance.

@@KristiWright Were I conspiratorially minded, I might be inclined to think there was collusion between designers and chiropractors. As for Andrew’s apparent disdain for Lazy Boy recliner, I’ve had back issues for decades, and find my slim line LB to be quite comfortable for extended viewing sessions. Admittedly the headrest is a bit high for optimal listening angles from rear ceiling mounted surrounds, but my DIY solution is a simple small accent pillow as extra seating cushion. Don’t laugh, it works like a charm, and I’ve long taken Andrew’s exhortation to heart; “ Remember, the only one who ……., is you”🤭

As a designer, I agree with you about the slats being overused... but... they've been around a lot longer than they've been popular just in different forms. I think they'll be used a bit more sparingly and in different ways. I'm working on a renovation for my home and will likely still go integrate them somehow.

Great video idea for looking forward to the coming year! Wife and I came up with a good compromise that utilizes a projector. We remodeled our living room with a big picture window, removed the 65” tv and put in a UTS projector and floor rising screen. Wife loves the living area more now without a tv screen and I love the home theatre option with a much bigger screen when called upon. We do have surround, but got white speakers to blend in a bit better. Our ust projector is 3500 lumens and works surprisingly well in bright light. I do prefer a tv screen, but hope the projector sticks around for applications like ours. We love it.

We've just done the same thing - it's the combination of the multi-use living area and desire for a large screen. A 100 inch TV has better picture, but it's so dominant in the room... No regrets at all!

Andrew, Kristi, have you ever imagined running another RU-vid channel? This time, focused on interior design. Given the success of your hi-fi channel with Andrew as the star, how about switching things up? Kristi, you could take the lead as the main host for a new RU-vid channel focused on interior design. Expanding into interior design appeals to a broader audience. Kristi, your expertise in interior design will captivate viewers, and switching roles adds variety. Considering the detailed nature of interior design, bi-monthly episodes for "Kristi's Interior Design Special" could work. You can cover room makeovers, DIY projects, expert guests, Q&A sessions, and behind-the-scenes content. What do you think? Is it a silly idea?

not to mention i have a 150" screen , if it was a tv i would have nowhere to puy my speakers because i wouldnt be able to put them behind it. i think thats a big one. 150" tv's would heat up a room fairly significantly and tbh would probably be uncomfterable on the eyes from the direct light brightness lol

@@brucebarnes311 I totally agree with this. I currently have a 120" non AT screen, but hope to some day have a 150" AT screen with a 4K laser projector. I prefer watching movies on my 120" screen with projector over our 75" TV. Now We sit closer to the 120" screen than the 75" TV, but I have watched a movie on my 75" TV from about 8' back and it was better, but not the same as the 120" screen from 11' back.

One potential advantage of projection systems is that a screen is far more acoustically friendly than the hard surface of a massive TV screen. Obviously, this affects some speakers more than others, but could be a factor in making the choice.

The only issue I have with TVs over projectors is that even when the TV is off it's still there. The picture quality of my LG UST projector is obviously not as good as my Sony OLED, but it's still very very good. I'll probably be moved to switch back to an emissive panel when the LED tiles get cheaper. Anyway, great report Andrew & Kristie!
@everss02
@everss02 6 месяцев назад
TV's are heavy ungainly and just too expensive and if you have to move good luck. I only go 65" max, so one person can mount or unmount. I love that the movie room is windowless and quiet, great for napping, and a 125" screen can't be beat. I initially was going to do a 95" inch in our new home, but just moving the thing made me walk away.
@megrey6926
@megrey6926 7 месяцев назад
One thing to add regarding the projectors vs large TVs discussion: a projector plus motorized screen gives the option to have a huge screen without it dominating the room when it is not in use. I'm running a projector with a 110inch motorized screen. A large TV would be too much in our living room from an aesthetics/space point of view. The projector+screen blends in until it's needed. If one's livestyle does not focus around several hours of TV time each day but rather selective movie sessions, a motorized screen plus maybe a smaller TV for 'non critical' viewing is a good option. Regarding image quality it can be matter of preference. I like the technical advantages of an OLED TV but also enjoy the cinema like look of a projector (in a light controlled room).

only caveat for separate/additional gear to supplement and complete singular tasks is with home theater & AvRs penchant for stating '11.2' etc... but then finding out you need a separate amp for 2, or even 4 of the channels. I picked up an RZ50 and then grabbed a simple Fosi 2 channel as the 50 is unable to drive all 11.2 unless you swap the Surround Backs to Rear Height assignment and then pre-out the Surround Backs to the additional amp. . I'm all for it though, as it forced me to finally tear everything down and rewire to eliminate the clutter and improve cable length. 1 thing NOBODY talks about is how aggravating it is to try and order cables for a specific layout and being forced to over-order length because you need 16' and the one you've got your heart set on is only available in 3', 6', 10', 25' and 50' 😡🤬

I definitely agree about the tacky factor relating to "marshmallow" home theater seating. A stylish, reclining sofa from West Elm is certainly comfortable and elegant, but it isn't practical for me and wouldn't be practical for a lot of families. My wife loves to munch on buttered popcorn while we watch movies. It's inevitable some of that popcorn is going to end up on the couch and, if it's an expensive West Elm couch, the upholstery would soon be trashed. This is a much bigger issue with families with young children. That's why durable leather or vinyl seating is essential for many home theaters or media rooms just as it is at a movie theater.

Hi there guys. Loved the video. You should do more of these less review based videos. This one was really nice and enjoyed watching it more than some of the reviews you do. Although your reviews are good also and helped me with purchasing decisions many times. I agree with some of the trends that you mention, but i do think that timeless trends where you can mix and match what you like and still keep it unique to your personality is key. Some of the trends mentioned i already have done in 2023, dark moody colour palettes and zone lightning. I also have used slat walls as dual purpose acoustic treatment solutions in combination with other acoustic materials for sound improvement and also home insulation for heat retention, as well as astetics. Also, im keeping my projection system mainly because i love the reflective image rather than beams of light coming straight to my eyes from the LCD panel. Projected images allow for less fatiguing experience. LCD screens are akin to using nearfield monitor speakers for daily listening, as they would fatigue yours ears too much. So yep, listen, i hear you. Most people want simplicity in their lives and huge TV is just less hassle than setting up a projecter. I get that. And as space in home becomes a priority then i see how that would influence decisions. But for me, and me alone, i am sticking to a projector. I love the look of a soft reflected image. I would certainly love the in wall speakers you mentioned as that would be great, the cost of hacking walls etc maybe not my idea of fun at the moment, so will stick to typical speakers for now. Please keep up the lovely work you both do. Its a great RU-vid channel, and always enjoy the content. Cheers 🎉

Big affordable TVs are a long time away, but they are definitely coming. As far as separates go in HT, they are not going anywhere. From someone who has been doing HT for 30 years and used receivers for 25 of them, there is no way separating the amplification from the processing on its own PSU will be replaced anytime soon. I was that guy who said it was crazy to spend that much money on separates when my Marantz receivers sounded so good until I went to Marantz separates. Huge difference.

You can still do it if you think it's the right solution for you. In the two years we've now had ours, it's become a look that I see everywhere, including from manufacturers of gear we review, which is not a coincidence. There have been a few instances in the last year where viewers have thought we were involved with a manufacturer's ad campaign because the brand copied our room.

As you mention about quality over quantity, I’m legitimately in that faze right now, instead of upgrade some gear to have right now I’m going to go with out, save up and get a pair of the sexy LS60’s. Hey Andrew, is there any wireless amplifiers for surround speakers able to connect to a receiver via Bluetooth or transmitter? I have the Sony bdv-n8100w which uses a wireless amplifier that powers the surrounds and connects wirelessly to the receiver. I was wondering if there ar any modern similar options available now? Thanks so much!

Excellent comment on the outgoing projectors. I thought i was a projection fan for life....but as prices dip and mounting options increase, im convinced that i may have purchased my last projector. However, since my theater and music area is a shared space, i will worry about the audio refection a tv causes (its why i went pure projection in that room....sigh 😂😂😂😂).

You still can’t put in wall speakers behind a TV. That’s still an area where projection leads. If you want an entire wall image (has anyone ever wanted a smaller screen?) or just don’t want speakers sitting in the room, transparent screens are still relevant. With that said I love where TV and wall screen tech is going. It’s incredible tech. Fun video. You also broke my heart with the wood slat wall comment, but I can’t deny it’s everywhere now.

Agree on the wooden slats. I saw an ad on Instagram from a company that sells those stick-on wooden slats and I thought to myself, yup these are now played out. The buy once, buy right also is also a great advice. My Dad still uses his Carver gear he bought 30 years ago. I had recently bought a older McIntosh MC202 power amp to go with the McIntosh C15 preamp we’ve had for the last 20 years and I intend to keep these pieces for the long haul as long as they work and are serviceable.

Thanks for the video. I HOPE that high-quality UST projectors will become much more affordable in 2024, I love the concept but they're too expensive and often important features are missing, it still feels kind of niche. While TVs offer more performance at a given price, I just don't want this big black surface to dominate my living room and am therefore waiting for an UST that checks all my boxes

multi use media rooms are great! i think projection will still be in for a little while.. the cheapest 98 inch tv is like 6000 CAD... you can still get that in a projector like a laser TV UST for half the price including the screen.

I own a Klipsch Cinema 600 with a complimentary 10” subwoofer and surround reference speakers. I’ve added an additional 12” Klipsch R121-W subwoofer to the system to achieve 5.2 status. I mainly stream music from iTunes to the system in Lossless (ALAC up to 24-bit/48 kHz). I’d like to improve quality of streams to Hi-Res Lossless (ALAC up to 24-bit/192 kHz). The Blusound Powernode seems like a viable option. That is if I’m able to either connect the unit to my Klipsch soundbar through either the HDMI e-Arc or optical link. I’d like to also add additional speakers driven by the Blusound Powernode channels. My questions is as follows: Will adding speakers via the Blusound Powernode create incoherent sound distribution between speakers linked to the unit and those connected to the Klipsch system?

Love you guys. You hinted at a trend that I find myself needing, but I am afraid to try. Ceiling Speakers as the LCF. Yes you have talked about ceiling for ATMOS and I have used ceiling for rear with good results, but I am scared to death to plan our new build with ceiling mains and then being disappointed. No one really does reviews of this because of how difficult it is to swap out different designs in the ceiling. Putting boxed speakers in the front can be done, but will take away from the rest of the design and comfort of the room we are planning. Some reviewers say simply don't do it. What are your thoughts? Are there any directional ceiling mounted speakers you have experienced worthy of using for the mains and center? Thank you!

I would like to see reviews of in-wall and in-ceiling HT options, and also information on surrounds, etc. for speakers you review positively. Many good main speakers have no clear options to complete an HT system. Two years ago I tried an entry level Revel in-wall that was disappointing and returned. I then found the Polk LS in-walls to be very satisfactory. But good information on these options is lacking.

Thanks! I found your channel looking over reviews for a Sony AN 10000. I was wondering if you would give me some quick tips. I’m not solid on the receiver but it may do the trick. I’m doing Klipsche speakers 3 in the front, 2 rear surrounds and 2 ceilings with 2 more 15 inch subs. I think I’m on the right track. What do you 2 think? I can’t wait! I’m wiring through the wall into my first DIY attempt at a professional looking utility closet. So much fun.

Sounds like a fun project. If you need dual sub outs and want those sub outs to be independent the Sony AN1000 (or any Sony AVR) will not be the AVR for you. You will need to look at Marantz or Denon for dual, independent sub outs.

Always choose quality over quantity in as many aspects of purchases as you can. Buy once, cry once, enjoy forever. I'm still using hifi gear I bought in Sept 1986 including Harman Kardon, ADC, Pioneer and Bose 601s and Cerwin Vega monsters. I regrettably sold the set of Cerwin Vega D-9s when I got married. (Shoulda kept the speakers) Automation is my bag and I use Alexa, Siri and Google hand in hand in hand by using their included features and connecting them via IFTTT and using a Mac Mini as a home server and HTPC system all together. My lighting systems, security and video systems as well as motion sensors in the wall switches and stairways have made my life super simplified and actually save me a good deal on my utilities every month as well. (Yes, I'm an engineer) A great video Andrew and Kristi, thanks for the commentary. Really enjoyed this one. *edited for content

Andrew can you help me decide on some flor standing speakers for my 5.1 Yamaha receiver. I have Boston Acoustics speakers front and rear, klipsch sub and an infinity center channel. My speakers are from 1989 LOL. My Yamaha is a RX-V679. I am comparing the Klipsch Reference Premiere RP-8000F II or the MartinLogan Motion Foundation F1. I am also understanding that if I pick the Martins I would need an amp, if so can you suggest one. Total about $1500 budget.
