I live in a home full to tech junk that I got when I bought the house: 3 3D TVs, 1 JVC 3D projector, 3 receivers, Wireline control pulse bus, wyrestorm, RTI, speakers in every room, Sonos, a video camera system, and a HAI Leviton PLC that runs everything. Ive been slowly learning all of this tech junk to get it working again and used this video to replace my Yamaha receiver with a Denon receiver I found in the living room so I could get my home theater golf simulator working. This was very helpful.

Im 59 yo and recently bought me an Onkyo RZ50 and was blown away by all its features it has. I managed to get it up and running for basic music listening and TV and movie viewing but haven't tapped into the surround sound features like Dirac, etc. It's already a bit over my head, but after rounding up enough speakers, I'll be taking advantage of that for sure. Thanks for your video, albeit you featured Denon. There are close similarities.

4:45 Also one of the most useful aspects of ARC (imo) is being able to control the volume of your AV with, say, a Roku remote. My living room Roku can only control my TV but with ARC, the volume on the Roku remote controls the AV volume. It'll also allow the TV power button to turn the AV on/off with the TV power button. SOOOOOOOO handy for simplicity.

As an addendum to the cooling: if you don't have your receiver in a cabinet, you should not need a cooler. They are designed to work just fine as is in an open environment. If your receiver is not in a cabinet and it gets so hot as to fail without a cooler on it, then your receiver needs to be repaired.

Great explanation as always. I have been growing my HT for about 20 years now and since so much has changed since I start it is always nice to see how so much has stayed the same. makes for the older tech to still be used and not have to upgrade everything all at once. I think next year might be my push for a better receiver get an amp, and then breakdown and get a better sub. might be next year some dual SVS big boys when they go on sale again HAHA. anyway keep up the fun vids cheers.

Chris Nice job, I would also recommend using the receive for those old lower resolution devices before outputting them to the tv to upconvert from lower resolutions to 4k, its a great improvement over native 480 to a 4k tv.

Simplest way to think of it is that it makes it so that you send limited bass to your speakers and let your subwoofers handle it since that’s what it’s there for

Excellent information! I'm running an Onkyo with 5.(forced)2 setup. I built my cabinate purposefully with an open top so the receiver gets all the airflow it needs. No heat issues at all. Hope you and your family have wonderful Chistmas holiday!

Chris, excellent video. I'm a long time subscriber and know you for AV & Home Routers but I was amazed to see your Home Lab complete with Home Assistant. You should seriously add videos about these other areas. For example, I would love to know what integrations you have with Home Assistant and your AV equipment or how your Home Lab works with your AV equipment or just even your Home Lab set up itself. Looking at your rack gave me some ideas for my own (the Tripp Lite Console). You've got a ton more really great content just waiting!!!

Great content as always Chris, would love to see more receiver content, particularly like a shootout of sorts at $500, $1000, $2000, $5000(?). I'm not big into receiver tech so aside from checking basic boxes of ability to push 4k 60 I'm not sure what's worth paying more for as you progress the ladder

Great guidance. Unfortunately when my late audiophile and HT fan husband set it up, we never talked about multiple subs and how they were calibrated. I just replaced our receiver and I get stuck in the auto-calibration. I also live in an old house, great plaster walls, not wallboard. It's a real interesting situation, but these videos help sometimes, and they're well done!

Have you done a video on electrical setup? I've just built a 6x12 shed (6x6 for theatre, the other 6x6 for a pool table and what not) and am about to wire it up. My end-game (years away) would be to have something similar to your mate's KRIX MX20 system with everything that goes along with it. Hey Chris, great channel. I have a question about older receivers. I got an older denon 7.1 receiver coming my way that supports up to dolby true HD. Now my question is if it's worth putting it in 5.1.2 with upfiring or sealing speakers or if I am better lf putti'g the speakers in a 7.1 configuration. I do wa't to upgrade kn the future but for now that's all I can afford but I do watch blu rays all the time so what would be my best pick, 5.1.2 or 7.1.

So the heatsink for my Denon avr 6700 is at the very front of the unit and the fans of the Infinity cooler that you were using are right in the center of the cooling unit. Is that going to be very effective if the heatsinks are right under a spot with no fans?

Thanks for the video! How loud are those fans? Just curious since I don't have a dedicated AV closet and instead opted for an AV media cabinet from BDI and would have this in my theater room. Not noticing any heat issues with my Onkyo RZ50 or my TW 8300 but I want them to live a long life.

They are very quiet. Especially at low speed
