Just got a new WiFi Router but don't want to change the settings in all your devices to connect to it? Here's an easy trick to allow all your current devices to SEAMLESSLY connect to your new WiFI setup! This could be a new gateway from your ISP like Charter, Spectrum, Xfinity or maybe you want to add your own personal router to a gateway from T-Mobile or Verizon Home Internet or Starlink, etc. These same steps apply.

Yeah, I knew about this when I bought my new WiFi 6 router. But, I had used a SSID name in my old router which all my devices connected to with a stupid "&" in the name. The new router would not take the "&" in the SSID name, so I was stuck going around changing all the connection names in my devices. Live and learn.

bummer. Some router also won't let you put a space in the password which is absurd

OK, I know some people wouldn't know that, but pretty standard stuff. What I'm more interested in is if you have flashed a router to DD-WRT and set it up as a VPN router? Looking to have a whole house go through VPN instead of having to set up every device. Thanks. Great channel.

yes and this router shown doesn't need to be flashed with DD-WRT to do whole house VPN ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SI3aTL4HS1A.html

@@NaterTater But you need to commit to cost of that router and/or VPN service.

So I have a Fios G3100. It just died(because they're terrible) and they are bringing me out the same exact model number. That means there should be no hiccups at all right? Except for any port forwarding rules I have to redo
@NaterTater

Correct, just restore the settings to the same as before and you should be good. You can restore the wifi name/password and all your existing devices will automatically connect to the new router.

When you have both 2.4 and 5 that are separated do you need "different" names and passwords?
@NaterTater
@NaterTater 11 месяцев назад
Yes, different names/ssid. Password can be the same.

While it's possible to connect a cellular router to your home router via ethernet, you might run into double NAT'ing, and slightly higher ping times and lower speeds due to the extra hop between the two routers. As an alternative your could just change the WiFi name and password in the cellular router's settings to be the same as in your home router's. Once that's set, turn off the power on the home router, turn on the power on the cellular router and all your devices should connect to it without having to change the WiFi name and password on all your devices. Personally I prefer to separate the 2.4 and 5GHz WiFi names simply because it's easier to tell which devices connect to which band. If you go with the solution above of using the cellular router only, at least one of the bands have to have the same WiFi name and password as in the existing home router, otherwise your devices will not connect. It's best to copy the exact same name and password as it appears in the home router in order to avoid any issues. ;)

Many cellular ISP's already have double NAT due to their CGNAT layer. There are a few ways to avoid adding another NAT layer in your home despite adding another device.

@BillAnt passthrough/bridge and turning off NAT on the downstream router so its effectively an AP.

what about a new combo modem with wifi built in - same ssid and password can be retained?
@NaterTater
@NaterTater 20 дней назад
yes, you can copy over the same ssid and password and your devices will transfer over seamlessly (just don't have two non-mesh routers with the same ssid at the same time)

I just got the Verizon WNC-CR200a, I currently have a Wind stream DSL Modem. All WiFi devices thru Windstream, do I change the Verizon SSID and password to the same as Wind stream and will NOT need to change all my WiFi devices to Verizon? Sorry, I'm Not real knowledgeable in this field and I don't understand. Fyi, I tried T-MOBILE and changed T-Mobile settings to show the same as Windstream and it kept connecting to Windstream, so I have to reset and use a T-Mobile Ssid and password. ??? Thanks.
@NaterTater
@NaterTater 4 месяца назад
correct, but you need to turn off or disable or change the wifi on the windstream to prevent your devices from keeping connected to it.

I'm getting ready to do this, do I change the Verizon modem to the exact as Wind stream first, then afterwards disable the Wind stream modem? If this is the way, will all WiFi devices (over 40l automatically connect?

i was more looking like an hands on video of how to do this, like an instruction video to follow.
@NaterTater
@NaterTater 7 месяцев назад
I can understand that but step by step by step instructions would be specific to each router so without knowing which router you have I can't do that.
