How to paint your wheels in Bronze / Yankee Gold.
In this How to Paint your wheels video, I started with a set of Rock Warrior wheels that the previous owner had painted black...
Rock Warrior wheels come in a grey color with a silver metal bead locker.
About 2 years ago, I bought a set of Rock warriors, where they were Powder Coated in Yankee Gold (a Prismatic color) and bead locker in black. they are shown in the video on my white Landcruiser. I get so many compliments...
So recently I found a set of Rock Warriors, where they were painted black.
i got them for a good price, knowing I would be refinishing them.
Powder coating would be about 800, since it was 2 colors.
So I decided to paint them.
At first with Dupli color bronze, but I felt it was not gold enough, so I then changed to having a sample of the Prismatic Yankee Gold, matched by my local Specialty Paint shop.
They matched it bang on!
I had to commit to a quart, which is $120 and makes 4 spray cans.
The quality of the paint and spray nozzles was 10/10!
The top coat is finished in a 2K clear coat satin.
it is an exact match to the powder coat! And using 1 and a half cans... leaves me 2 and a half cans for maybe 2 other sets. You will see the Landcruiser 80 series 16" wheels I did at the end...
I did those so I could use the same 2k Clear satin at the same time. when mixing the 2K, you want to use it within 72 hours... hence I did the 2 sets.
I think the project turned out better than expected, and these Rock Warriors will look great on a White or Black Tundra, Land Cruiser or LX570...
Personally, I think these Rock Warriors are nicer than the 2020 and 2021 TRD Heritage wheels on the Landcruiser!

Saw your HJ80. I am about to buy one... yours the HDT or the HDFT. I have a 1HZ HZJ73 and a 12HT HJ61... so working my way up on power...

@@CruisingTheLand mine is actually a FZJ80 with the gas 4.5L, just like the USA models. Not usually the first choice for an imported 80 but that’s part of the reason it was the cheapest imported 80 in the US. And the fact that the previous owners didn’t really maintain it.

Ahh got it. I have a 95 FZJ80 (in my channel) and once I get the 1HDT, I will compare it to the 4.5L gas engine. I am pretty sure it will be double the mpg...ans torque will be noticeable on thr low end at 260lbs@ 1400rpm

Look great..I have just fired some sepang bronze basecoat on some steel wheels and the finish is perfect as is...was unsure wich way to go regarding satin or matt clear but after watching this will take the satin route

The paint is a better option than powder coat.

Powder coat is the ultimate, but is costly. Paint is much less and can be DIY at home.

How did you get the beadlocks off? I picked up a set of Rock warrior wheels for my tundra and they are in rough shape. I removed most of the torx heads from the beadlock wheels but had a few strip out. Also how did you clean up the wheel prior to the prep for paint? Mine has some pretty bad brake dust stains on the factory paint that I cannot get to come off. Thanks for the help and I'll be using the same products!

Since you are painting, you can clean with degreaser, than with Muriatic acid (10%, 90% water) The beadlocks are fake of course, so remove to paint. Thr screws that striped, put some plumbers tape on the new screws. Thise damn screws always loosen.

Hey I just bought a set of Rock Warriors for my Tundra TRD Off Road and I really like that color. Have you seen a stock color on spray paint that's close to the yankee gold? My Tundra is white and I think the gold wheels with black rings look really good. Thanks for the help!

The Yankee Gold is a Prismatic powder coat color. Matching is pricey, but there is alot of fleck in it. Close will be the bronze in dupli color, but it will be less Gold and more Bronze.

@@CruisingTheLand Thanks for the information. Can you tell me about how much of each product it took to do 4 wheels? I was thinking 1 can of epoxy primer to the 4 rings, 1 can of matte black for the rings, 4 cans of bronze for the wheels and 1 can of matte clear coat, am I off on those? Going to order tomorrow and just want to make sure I'm getting enough. I hate getting into a project and running out of material. I think I'm just going to go with the dupli-color bronze.

Hi, just watch your video again and wondering, are you using wheel spacers? And if you do what size and brand. I plan to buy some spacer but dont know what size to use to install my set of rock warriors on my 100 series land cruiser, thank you again.

Must use Spidertrax, from Slee. Especially for front floating hub. Only ones that fit.

Awesome demo! I’ve used Spray Max 2K satin on all my custom VT100 bobber parts after spraying them in Trim Black (an OEM trim paint in satin), and it’s phenomenal stuff. I will be painting my 8 spoke Ultra Crusher wheels for my Durango soon, just the diamond cut surface on the spokes. Leaving the inside and fake bead locker black. I imagine 2 cans of paint will be more than enough. I raptor lined my Durango with Dodge’s new Destroyer Gray as the colorant for the Raptor. Everyone loves it. I am stuck between getting the same bronze color you have, or paint matching to destroyer gray. I keep photo shopping and can’t decide lol Anyway, how many coats of clear did you use on that set? 1 can of 2K clear enough?

Also, what grit did you sand the bead lockers with? Or just red scotch right? I won’t be priming the diamond cut surface. Wasn’t thinking I’d need to epoxy them. If I should, I will. It’s cast aluminum. Again, just the faces of the spokes are diamond-cut (raw metal). The part I won’t paint is satin black. It’ll take some precise taping but I’ve been taping and painting like a boss for years.

One can of clear shluld be plenty. It sprays fine and covers great. 2 light coats amd final medium coat.

Anytime I paint over metal, epoxy is important. It sticks to the metal, giving something for thr paint to stick to. Better safe than sorry...

@@CruisingTheLand I concur, glad I found your video and for that pro tip. I’ve painted many painted wheels with VHT, but bare metal, nope. Yeah you’re totally right now that I think about it!

Hey random question, could I do a regular base and a high heat clear on my calipers? The color options for caliper paint is really limited and would like something more custom but wasn’t sure if the base also needs to be high heat?

yea, base which is adhering to the caliper must be high heat. the heat comes from the inside, not the outside. but all heats up!

Hey! Just wondering how the paint has held up. If it gets scratched, can you see the black underneath? Overall, has it stayed looking nice?

I sold these wheels. One thing is when mounting tires, to be sure the tire shop is aware to take more care, use shop cloths etc... if they bang around thr rim with tire rods, they can and will do damage. Otherwise, paints holds up! And really, if you have curb rash or damage, you can re-shoot that area..
