Wat abt the inside of the rim dude wont overspray while painting the face of the rim go inside the rim causing dry over spray on the inside of the rim dont you paint the inside aswell
Most DIY videos: "First, put your car up on your lift. Then roll over your toolbox with $40K worth of tools." This guy: "We're doing everything by hand!" I love it! Great video.
@@PaintSocietySo if I don’t want that glossy look ( I’m looking for that factory aluminum look) leave out the gloss then? Also, do I need to do the tac rag regardless? Great video! Thank you kindly!
@@OdditiesOffcial if you haven't done the job already, maybe use a matte clear coat instead of a gloss coat. Clear coating after spray painting will make the job last a lot longer and look better
Trip report with some tips. First and foremost, a huge thank you to Brian and @Paint Society for the video, it REALLY helped my second whack at this go a jillion times better. Considering the number of newbies watching, here's some tips and tricks from a newbie that Brian didn't cover probably because he's old hat at this and it's just a given to him. 1. Buy all of your paint at one time from one place. If you have the option, look at the bottom of the cans and get matching lot numbers. QC seems a little loose over at Duplicolor and the color can vary widely from can to can. If you expect to need touch-ups down the road get a few extra. 2. I only used 2.5 cans of each to paint five 20" six-spoke F150 wheels. 3. I can't speak for any other colors but the Graphite is really gritty, the Sprayway wipe is a good idea between all of the base coats. 4. Avoid trying to paint the wheel upright, hard to see where you're getting good coverage. Laying down at an angle like the video shows worked best. I did mine with a light coat left to right, then a light coat up and down on each layer. 5. Don't make the first spray out of the can on the wheel, give a quick shot away to avoid spit/splatter. Wipe the tip often as suggested. 6. Get some slip on shoe covers. Overspray on the floor builds up quick and sticks to your shoes, then you forget and go walking thru the house leaving paint on your floor that's a SOB to get off. 7. Watch the video and take notes. What sandpaper did he use for that? How long between coats was that? Lots of steps and times in this video, handy to have them written down.
Well done! With any paint project, prep is key. This video illustrates doing it the right way. Your newly painted rims are going on your coveted ride and taking shortcuts does not work. They are going to get a lot of abuse from the road, brake dust, repairs, etc and you want a quality durable finish. No point in doing it if you're gonna do it half-assed. Worth spending the time on the front end to get the results and longevity on the back end. Great video!!
This was a great tutorial. Just did some Audi wheels yesterday. I didn’t use the exact same products, but your step by step was a perfect guide. They came out incredible! Thanks! 🤙🤙
I never liked the dark gray color of my Honda Ridgeline rims, so I followed your instructions using Duplicolor silver paint over white primer and clear coated with the 2K clear coat. The tip about using the SprayAway glass cleaner to smooth the surface is genius. I am very pleased with the results. Many thanks!
Awesome video. I used to spray can computer cases for mods and a good tip to avoid gritty paint or stippling is to lay the can in some hot water to loosen up all the paint that does not get thoroughly mixed.
I’m just finishing my wheels, after almost one week sanding them (it’s was pretty beat up) I’ve primed them today, will leave drying overnight, tomorrow sand with 400 wet grit as you showed, paint and satin clear coat. It’s been a long process, but I’m an enthusiast, I believe we all are, it’s a pretty fun process actually, demands attention, patience and organization, but very rewarding, you save a lot $$$ buy doing it yourself.
Thanks for the tip regarding how it isn’t necessary to use primer on spots that weren’t repaired. I have a nearly new set of aftermarket wheels in perfect condition that have a flat finish that I now realize that I hate, and I want to spray them in a gloss finish. It’s good to know that I can clean them, rough them up, and skip to base and clear coat.
Dude, you killed it! They look amazing! I think the most important part of the whole project is "patience"! If people follow the steps you showed - look out! America is going to get shinier! Great job! You just gave me the confidence to finish a job I've been putting off for a while! 2k clear, here we go! 👍👍
I did this a few years ago when I put 05 Acura TSX wheels on my 07 Accord. I followed almost the exact same process and it worked remarkably well. I had a couple of chips I had to go back and fix when the tires got remounted but other than that, they were great.
I am getting ready paint some wheels, and I've seen all the wheel painting videos on youtube. This is the best video on painting wheels yet. You should get some kind of award. excellent video
I've used a lot of the eastwood 2k aerospray cans. I think something to stress is the temperature needs to be as close to 70f as possible or higher and most importantly you need to shake the crap out of the can before and after you pierce the hardener. I had issues when I first started using the 2k aerospray paint because I wasn't shaking it well enough especially with the color paint, the primer isn't too bad. I want to say it's the cans with the white knozzles that really need that extra shaking and make sure the can is warm it doesn't need to be hot but just warm. I've easily used over 250 cans of that aerospray paint and I haven't had a single issue after I figured out the temperature is important not just with your project but the actual can needs to be warm it seems like common sense but it's something I make sure of everytime now and most importantly you have to shake the hell out of it like 3 minutes before and 3-4-5 minutes after piercing the hardener. I'm sure I go slightly overboard with the shaking but when I first started using it every single can clogged up because I wasn't shaking it enough I was doing 2 minutes before and 2 minutes after and that wasn't working well for me the cans clogged up not just the tips but the whole can. Like I said the primer is more forgiving I believe all the cans with the black knozzles are more forgiving. Then also the primer goes a lot further than the color like a lot further so get extra color. Otherwise I love that 2k aerospray stuff it's really good paint especially if you prep well and keep it at temperature while it dries, I use the chassis black on roll cages and bumpers and stuff on jeeps and it's very durable, surprisingly durable and very easy to use especially when you just have a single item to paint.
Isn’t this the same as paying someone to do it for you? I added the products in the description and total it and it comes to $300-400 give or take. Clear: $33x3 Primer: $33x2 Pre paint prep: $15x1 Paint: $13x4 Total: $232 plus the other added products. Isn’t better to pay someone to do it when they are charging $50 a wheel?
Man this guy gives free seminars on RU-vid. I'm planning on repairing my dad's w211 e200 after army. If the shipping to Greece isn't insane I'll buy a t-shirt of yours and tag you when I get it all done. You are a blessing thanks a ton
I really appreciate this level of perfection and detail. But I think I could get 3/4 of the way there with about 1/4 of the perfectionism. You are an excellent teacher and a skillful painter.
Very nice, love the masking! I may have missed it but on the back of the Dupli-Color can it states, "for additional coats after one hour, wait seven days for the paint to cure." Because this is an enamel it needs to set. If you coat with the clear too soon it could mess up all of your work. I'd wait to do the clear coat. If you use a lacquer clear coat it will definitely mess up the enamel. Always check to make sure your product makeup matches it's just easier, especially after you spend hours prepping. It's 90% prep and 10% finish that makes the wheels look good.
Overthinking is definitely one mistake people make (I know I do it too) but I think an even bigger problem is impatience (again I have been guilty of that many times.) What I have brought myself to do when painting anything is to set a timer on my phone. I either walk away from the project completely while a coat dries, or I start on something else and don't go back to it until my phone goes off. This helps with going back too soon, or even waiting too long in some cases. I've painted wheels before so I already know lots of the tips and tricks you showed, but I watched anyway because I have a set of wheels that need touched up and I still learned a few things.
Good video, bought set if alloy rims off junker for my camry. Coating peeling do did this repaint thing came out good. Now if you get curb rash and want to fix here is a tip. To fill gouges use jb weld as filler. Stays for ever and when hardened can be sanded lime metal then touch up paint.
I just got a set of 20x9 wheels for my car for less than $100. Videos like this and a few others have helped me get the road rash repaired and they're primed up. Just waiting on a few cans of spray paint. For less than $150 I'll have a great looking set of wheels. 😃
UPLOAD ANOTHER VIDEO! lol. im patiently waiting! im not just meaning so i can learn more stuff, i actually enjoy watching you as a person! your an awesome guy! jumping on your channel to hear your voice and seeing your artwork is like coming home and eating a perfect steak infront of the fire! didnt mean for that to sound cringy but it sounded good in my head lol. love your videos though, you do amazing work and also make my day better! hope this motivates you! thanks mate :)
Omg I just finished a set of 19" AMG wheels. Gave up trying to strip off the coatings with paint stripper so took them to get them acid dipped. Mirror finishing the spokes, masking then spraying with primer, base coat and lacquer. Time, effort and costs considered, I wish I'd got them done by a specialist. Although they looked great when done.
This is all well and good if on a budget or if you can't find a powdercoat shop. But if you absolutely have to have a more durable finish powdercoat is the way to go and you'll also have a larger array of colors and finishes to choose from.
I love using Duplicolor on all my projects because of the micro flake. My favorite is the silver. I shoot House if Kolor candies over it and finish it with a 2K clear also. I shoot my last coat of clear pretty wet to prevent having to color sand.
@@robwhiff3411 About 20 to 30 minutes after the base coat. Any longer than an hour and you should wait to clear for at least 2 weeks or more. It is best to clear right after the base coat is applied ~ (20 to 30 min wait) then apply your 2k clear in at least 3 coats, the first coat should be light to medium and the others can be sprayed a little wetter, the heavier the coat the more shine you will see but be careful not to coat to heavy to where it runs. Just take it slow and ensure even coverage and you will be fine. It is much easier to apply additional coats compared to removing and starting over.
What did you do with the inside of the wheels? Wouldn’t they have a spiked overspray where the paint products landed while painting the face? This is a honest question.
Got some old 13 inch Crager's out of a field, chrome still passable with a good polish but inside the rims was too corroded. The bead wouldn't set well, slow leak even with goop. I cleaned the inside with a wire wheel and used metallic bondo to smooth them out and primed and painted. Good for nearly two years now.
I used this same method and had great results until my recent tire change over this winter. When the tech cleaned the inside of the wheel for mounting the weights the chemical (acetone??) ran down the front and wrinkled the clear coat. Just an FYI for anyone. Other than that, they cleaned really well and held up great until this happened.
It looks like the Eastwood glazing putty is unavailable. Do you have suggestions for a substitute ? I seen someone use Evercoat lite weight for the wheels, but it says it can be used on fiberglass as well. So I'm thinking I can try to patch the small bumper and have some left over for the wheels on this old Honda.
That's another reason why your work comes out great. Not only do you use really good products, you imphasize on preeminent prep. You spend up to 5x the time on prep than you do on the actual paint process.
Hi Brian a great tip for doing wheels is to let the air out and get a tyre shop to break the outside bead on the tyre leave the inside bead locked in place so no need to re balance ,now with the outside bead released you have a gap between the tyre and rim so much easier to work on and you get the paint round the edge now grab a piece of corflute (plastic cardboard) the stuff they make signs from now get a piece bigger than the wheel and tyre cut a hole in the middle the same as the tyre size eg 17" tyre 17" hole cut a slit on one side you can now slide it in between the tyre and rim and there is no need to mask anything except the valve stem and once its all painted you just remove the corflute and pump the tyre back up the bead will pop back on and your ready to go . In Australia we can't get most of the products you use and the American products that are available are way over priced eg the 2k clear rattle cans are $60 each ,anyway love the tips and tricks thanks for all the work you put into the videos .Have a great Christmas and a safe new year .
Love your stuff Brian, I've learned a lot and have built the confidence to take on more projects of my own. I would like to see a video on how to setup a air compressor for body work and painting.
Pretty cool, I was looking to paint my ITR wheels a gun metal color and throw them on my 1st Gen CR-V.. and to see these wheels done and go on a CR-V like mine was confirmation 🤟🏼🙌🏼
@Paaint Society have you ever tried cutting a small hole in the bottom of a Hefty Flex garbage bag and stretching that over the wheel for painting? This will save you a lot of time and the flex draws it tight to the bead
For those who have painted your wheels how have they held up when getting new tires mounted? Has the tire changing machine and handling by the tech caused any damage? Thanks.
Nice work... Thank you gonna try this on my merc, got a few scratches here and there, and as Will 9877 pointed out will be putting the cans in some warm luke water :)
Great video as always and full of useful info like tips, drying time, etc! I wanted to know how much of each product you did use and I found that it is mentioned in the description! Keep up the good work!
Love this video! Have to tackle the curb rash on my 2010 Fit wheels and seeing those wheels in that color makes me kinda think about painting my stock wheels a different color, but I'll probably just keep them stock. Thank you and keep putting out these great vids! P.S. Killer music at the end! Made me smile from ear to ear!
YES this is so much more work than it looks lol. It took me TWO days to do this! I am just hoping it lasts more than 3 months. If you can afford it just have your rims dipped! A lot of work for just a few months.
Good video eastwood 2k stuff is really good paint and easy to polish. I figured out a way to make sanding so much better with a sheet of paper. No folding needed just put duct tape on the back of it. Only flaw with it is you have to mark it with the grit with a pen otherwise youd have to guess. Remember dont overthink it, its just duct tape.😂Thank you for your knowledge and your awesome techniques.
30minforasn it’s a RU-vid channel, they need content anyways and they do this stuff on the daily so I doubt filming that video would be out of their way
Great channel!! Very thoughtfully explained and for every level of equipment. Now I know what I have been doing wrong for many years! Could you do one on painting wheels with hyper silver?
we used a rebadged version of sprayway to clean where to primer and urethane would go to glue in a windshield. this was for a major nationwide company.
Dude, I don't know how, but you obviously could hear me a few days ago. I literally told my son that I wished Paint society would do a wheel video because I was tired of the crappy videos about wheels. thank you!
@@PaintSociety yes you are! Lol. Since you are, if the hood on an Xterra I just picked up has lots of small "crows feet" on it. I assume I will have to strip to the metal to permanently repair that?
Painted my alloys paint will chip like paint does but cheaper than powder coating. Touch ups easy.even on car. Use deck cheap cards placed around rim pushed into tire bead. Stuff walart plastic bags in rims blocking rotors. Sand and touch up chips
As always you make it look easy. Amazing attention to detail with ultra professional results, even with a rattle can. Thank you sir for the encouraging and instructional footage. It is inspiring. Subscribed and smashed the like button without hesitation.
You did a great job. This video inspired me to paint my own wheels. I jist watched it again for the second time I learned so much.i have now painted a total of 6 sets of wheels using these methodes ir similar methodes!
I was going to post a negative review on how many sprays you need to paint you're rims and it's a waist of time. But I saw the whole video and I was so into it that it made me want to do that to my rims. Thank you for explaining things in detail. Theirs other videos that just show you to spray the rims and whaam bam thank you mam. you tell it step by step and this is my first time painting and this video game me so much knowledge . Thank you . Where is the 100 star review at?
The chances this vid pops up :D After repainting my entire car, I have now moved on to the wheels :D Had some heavy scuffs and dents, So fillered, sanded, High build primered, and in middle of painting them Pearl Cadbury Purple :D
Happen to stumble across this vid. Excellent, step, by, step to recolor rims! A project my son wants to do to his car with the exact same color. Thanks for this. I’m a subscriber!
I have 4) 20" five spoke factory ram wheels that have 100 miles on them are in new condition. They are painted in that factory silver paint and I believe they have a clear coat on them. Do think I need the primer? How much paint and clear coat do you think I'll need? I plan on using the same paint & clear coat brands as you did in your video.
Great video, but I ended up with way too much product based on their recommendations. I only used two cans of paint and one can of clear coat. I was spraying very generously on bigger rims than a Honda, not sure why the big difference in amounts. Now I"m stuck with paint that will go bad and less money in my pocket. But, they did turn out great.
Man every time! I need a video on how to do something and you make it. Get out my head bruh! Great video!! I have a friend with road crash on his factory wheels and I might be buying them off his to put on my car now.
It is! Learning a lot. I picked up a 2011 Xterra and sadly as I look closer at the hood, I have crow's feet so sadly it looks like I will have to strip back down to the bare metal. This channel is a gold mine.
@@awhite3713 I did paint my older 97 Mustang GT after watching these videos. I didn't have all the time I needed but it came out well. When I go for my new car I feel like it will come out way better. My hood had similar issues but I used high build primer.
Thanks for all the info and tips Brain your the men San Antonio tx needs people like you like always smashing my like botton Texas style yahoooooooooo katakaboooooooooooooooom
My 05 acura tl has the same wheels and wanted to paint them but wasn't sure what it would look like with my car color. This is great.(they also have a bunch of curb rash from previous owner)
