Hello friends,
I hope you are doing well.⋆✵
I was going to title this video "coffee and you", but I was feeling bloated that day so I decided to have tea instead;;
This isn't a "RISD accepted portfolio" video because I wanted to share my college application portfolio from highschool. I didn't apply to RISD at that time - I transferred 2 years later - but I thought it'd be more fun to look back at my 17-year-old self compared to 23, now.
If you managed to watch until the end...! I just want to say thank you ;-; because I felt like I poured out a little bit of my soul into this video. During filming I forgot I was just talking to myself, alone in my bedroom, it felt like I was actually having a conversation with you.
I truly believe that art and making is my life's calling - although there were rough times when I wanted to quit and give up, because I didn't believe I was strong enough, or good enough, or just "enough", my RISD family taught me how to forgive myself and be okay. I am so unbelievably lucky and blessed.
So - this is for anybody out there looking for just a little bit of light and motivation. Just a little bit more, it will be all worth it! I promise!

Tbh I feel like my high school art portfolio was significantly shittier than hers, & it was still good enough to impress many art schools. I ended up not only getting accepted but offered full scholarships to various art schools across the country. Due to serious family problems & financial issues at the time, I sadly dropped out of art school & never returned for my fine arts degree. However, what I’m trying to say is.. if you have any artistic talent at all & you can figure out how to put a decent portfolio together, you can get into art school. You ARE good enough to go. I do really believe that people can be too hard on themselves when it comes to obtaining an education in art. You do NOT have to be perfect to apply. I mean if you already were a perfectly polished artist, what would even be the point of going through their program, right? They’re looking more for someone with some ability and a lot of potential than someone who is already amazing.
@tarekyoungapelian4542
@tarekyoungapelian4542 4 года назад
If your art is truly just not up to the level needed at all to apply, try taking some basic figure drawing classes on your own first. It will help you not only gain experience but potentially get you some finished pieces to include in your portfolio. Don’t give up!

Looking at portfolio videos make me feel, I dunno, un accomplished? I have alot of my drawings on my wall and they're not really memorable, I guess is the way to describe them. There's maybe two drawings(one being made up of dots and the other being mixed media, both are portraits,) that I look at it and feel like my art is, in simple words, good. I feel like my art isnt going anywhere, y'know? This isnt to compare myself to lilith or anyone else I watch, or to down my own work, but I can't help but feel stuck with my art
@skyllarrk

Janiya I know it’s not easy, but be proud of what you’ve made. I don’t know your situation, but I’m sure you’ve come a long way since you’ve started creating artwork. This trend of improvement will continue throughout your entire life. We artists are never satisfied, haha, and it goes to show that you are taking what you do seriously. Manifest that into working towards your goals. If you do, you will get to a point where you are finally satisfied with what you’re creating. Keep it up!

Well if youre not applying to art school and only consider art a hobby, then thats absolutely okay!!! Because you dont have to be the best at it, you have to enjoy the process. But ofcourse, with practice comes improvement and artists tend to br too harsh on themselves regarding their art. You're prolly bashing yourself too much and to anyone with like eh level talent, it would look impossible to drae and aesthetically vvv appealing. I realize you didnt ask for advice, nor are you fishing for compliments, but honestly believe in yourself. Fr, your arts better than hundreds andthousanfs of individuals if thats the kind of thing that gets you going. You cant compare your step 1 to someones step 100, nobody is born with random polished artistic ability, arts a skill you can hone. Please stop putting yourself down, its only damaging in the long run. Forgive your art and try your best to improve and who knows, we might see your art hanging in somefamour art gallery if thats your goal. If you just enjoy it ingeneral and dont intend to pursue it as a career, still keep in mind that art is art, its a creation that makes you feel smth, anything do give yoyr skills some credit and believe in yourself!!!!! Have a greatttt day

Keep drawing sweetie and remember my quote "compare and despair"! This applies to every kind of comparison btw. We artists are never satisfied- I see flaws in my work (and personality😆that other people really like. Alwaya be watchful for the negative mind bias - it can sabotage good work and progress!😊

Someone of you want to be an artist or draw as hobby but are discouraged by comparing your drawing to her at the same age, I want to tell you that we all grow at different pace, and no matter what you draw, draw with the thought that "this is going to be MY best masterpiece" and as you keep working you'll find your own art style which doesn't necessarily has to be realistic, give it your style, but remember to also learn from other artists to realize your mistakes. Best of luck

A lot of your art post graduation looks more like fine art than illustration save for the little illustrated short stories. I’m curious what jobs you can get with this kind of post art school portfolio? Or are you thinking of going the gallery artist route? It’s interesting.
@mimaishawesome
@mimaishawesome 5 лет назад
I don’t know... it definitely is illustration, I could easily see in on editorial. Illustration is “art with utility”, work to convey the message to support the text. A lot of people these days think illustration is just what people draw and post on Instagram or what popular RU-vid illustrators do. I’m sure it’s not the case with you, but seems like a trend to me in general.

Being someone who recently decided to drop out of college, it’s kinda nice seeing someone thoroughly go through their old work and interpret their thoughts and shortcomings and how their art has changed. I honestly have been having trouble keeping positive sometimes about this experience, but I realized having more time to myself at home has really given me the opportunity to sit down and analyze my style more and I’m coming to realize that I really still do love color but in a more minimal, intentional way than in hs, and that the human face and nature fascinates me much more than I remember in hs.

Lilith! I definitely understand the feeling of facing the many unknowns right after graduation. The many gray areas that one has to face and ultimately walk into. But I learned so far that no matter where oneself is, a company, a personal practice, teaching, or whatnot, the most important thing is to remember one's personal purpose. The change that an individual wishes to make can be made no matter what one is doing or where one is as long as the will is strong. We are placed where we are for a purpose. I hope that makes sense. Lol but wishing you a great journey ahead! P.S. For some reason your art reminds me a lot of Yoshitaka Amano's Final Fantasy art! Abstract and yet conveys so much story and depth. Thank you for sharing this video, it feels like being able to talk to a friend. 💕 Also, love how your Stuffie friends were there too!

Reading through these comments made me realize that a lot of people are doing art either because it's trendy to be artistic, or because they want to make money out of it. Let me tell you guys something. Your first reason for doing art should be passion and your desire to express your thoughts and ideas in a visual form. If you don't love doing art, don't bother with it. Find something else you like. Money and trends can be found other places as well.

I only see something in both that I can not explain other than a style. sorry if I am fumbling with my words, Schiele was a inspiration to me when i was a teen learning to sketch figures, his surrealistic perspectives and sharp lines are not only pleasing to look at but also the simplicity of his works really helped me to understand the basics of figure drawing. I'm happy I've just stumbled on this video by chance! I've been subscribed to your sister's channel for some time and I kinda mistook this video as hers when it popped up on my RU-vid main page. (because her Instagram username is pyperbleu, if I remember correctly...? and I was for a moment confused) Not that I'm disappointed! It's the opposite. And now I'm following this channel too. I'm an illustration & design student, and I've been quite unexcited with making art for the last few months recently. I was just totally deprived of any desire to work on personal pieces once I was done with things required by the school, especially because last semester was largely geared toward digital work/design stuff whereas I'm more into traditional medium/illustration things. This clash between the school thing and my thing, sustained for months, kinda left me uninspired and put me in a rut. Your video though, it gave me so much motivation! I love your style and I also love the fact you draw inspiration from books and films because that's what I love doing too. Watching your video reminded me of the time when I was drawing purely for self-expression and nothing else mattered, and made me want to lose myself in the process again. Thank you so much :)

so i just watched another video of a girl talking abt her portfolio and damn what a difference - she was showing off like a show pony (trained by her parents), talking very excited abt all her achievements and art prizes, but when she got to her art she was like "yeah i think theyre pretty and thats why i painted it like that" - compared to you, someone that is truly excited for the craft and the meaning behind every stroke. also i love how you said that you loved each piece and the process of creating it. her art wasnt bad, but it definetely lacked the thought and soul you put into your artwork

That colourful cat at 7:01 would make a lovely print or a shirt design. You should sell that stuff on like etsy or something.

I love art but I study architecture. I find this extremely inspiring. Seeing how you get inspiration from anything makes me want to broaden my "inspiration bubble?". The portfolio and grades tips at the end really help aswell. Hopefully I'll be able to implement those to work for my major.💞
