this is what I learned from 5 years of private art universities (*´ I `)ノ゚(ノД`゚)゚。
*all opinions are subject + from my own experience!
Hello friends,
I attempted to tackle the subject of "art school advice," which encompasses many many things that I unfortunately could not fit into a single video. I would love to hear your feedback, and let me know if there is anything I missed/should address!
I did not get a chance to really go in depth about making work/how to improve your skills (color, composition, etc,) there isn't one way of working and I tried my best not to give a false impression that what works for me is the "right" way to do things.
I feel bad that I couldn't put out two videos this week, so I will try and make it up to you all with a bonus video sometime in November..! maybe something ASMR + art (´。• ᵕ •。`) ♡
I'm currently debating on whether or not I should unpack, because there is a chance I will be moving to New York City by the end of the year (which isn't that far away...) and I'm;;;soooooo;;;tired of moving..... I have been struggling with my physical strength as of late, it may be the cold weather but I've noticed my stamina isn't as good as before (I get worn out so easily + have lots of aches and pains) I may have to look into some vitamins + supplements. I've been having problems with my uterus ;-; which is a little TMI(?) but I think I'm not getting enough iron because of it.
Also my inktober streak is so terrible right now haHAHA but I will draw as much as I can! 0: it's so much fun, I recently figured out how to use the symmetry tool in procreate and it changed my life!
I hope you are doing well, and if you are not that is okay too, you don't have to force yourself.
Please subscribe and like this video if you enjoyed...! Thank you for all your love and support!

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a video about the qualms of art school verbalized so well. Literally all of these thoughts have ran through my head some point in the last year and a half. It feels so nice to be validated!!! Thank you for sharing these lovely insights with us, I hope to grow and improve to acknowledge most of these by graduation!!!! Have a lovely day ❤️❤️❤️

I'm coming up to the end of my first year in art school and I'm definitely going through a lot of similar situations as Lilith,, Although theres not much of an all nighter 'trend' between my peers theres definitely a 'leave it to the last minute' attitude about all our projects.. It's hard not to be influenced by that because we are all include a group chat where we share our work and chat about classes.. I'm also super guilty of coming into the course with an overconfident mindset but everyone in my class is so talented in their own way and so I've kind of lost my sense of purpose throughout this year. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and advice on art school!! I feel better knowing that other people feel the same way as I do right now 💖💖

I'm not in art school (I'm an engineering student and my major is urban planning) but this was still very relevant to me! Thank you for the precious advice ✨ It is very relaxing to listen to your voice as well. Now I feel motivated for my day, hopefully I'll study efficiently! Also, when I feel like my physical strength isn't the best, I try to get my blood circulating, so maybe go for a walk and stretch afterwards? Sometimes I get so engrossed in my work that I don't really do any physical activity for a while, and it's tiring for the body to be too sedentary. Hope you'll feel better soon ~
@pyperbleucollective
@pyperbleucollective 4 года назад
I always forget to stretch! Thank you~~ I have to find a way to build better habits for my physical body, I *know * I should be exercising but I am very sedentary and low energy (it all goes straight to my brain and manifests as complex thoughtforms) I get hungry very easily when I am in studio I have to eat every hour! I'm currently reading about urban planning since you've mentioned it, and it's super interesting but also seems incredibly intimidating as a major;;
@leiasing76
@leiasing76 4 года назад
Could you share a bit about your experience majoring in urban planning?
@gaelle3160
@gaelle3160 4 года назад
@@leiasing76 Of course! A bit of context first: I'm a French student, and I studied physics, mathematics and general engineering science for three years before I started studying urban planning and urban engineering last year. Because of my strong scientific background, I found urban planning frustrating and unsettling at first. I was used to equations and having precise hypotheses, and urban planning forced me to consider problems at a much bigger scale. I am so glad I chose this major though. There is a historical aspect to it - it is very satisfying to wander around Paris and be able to explain why the city looks the way it does - and just like arts there have been different currents influencing urban planners in the way they shape cities. There is also a scientific and very practical aspect: people have needs that need to be met efficiently such as transportation, water, sewage, etc. and your plans also have to meet the local political agenda, as your client (the city, region, state, etc.) has to be satisfied with your solution. Does that answer your question? (: (sorry for writing loads ;o;)
@leiasing76
@leiasing76 4 года назад
Gaelle Thanks for the comprehensive response! Although I dont think I will major in it, Im thinking of taking courses in urban planning or urban studies once Im in college so it was interesting to find your comment!

I agree with every word, I have been attending the College of Art for a second year and your tips have touched me really personally. People don't really understand how much time and investment you have to spend on everything.Inspiration doesn't come suddenly I'm looking everywhere for ideas to help me have my piece (also from your videos🤗). In my experience, I advise others not to look at other students and see how good they are in comparison to you In the end, it is your investment and effort that you should value and not be disappointed in yourself in relation to the work of others. Good luck to everyone who is studying art this year and to those who are learning something else ⁦💪🏻⁩. Most importantly do not forget to enjoy 🌬️⁩⁦💃🏼⁩

I just graduated from my uni this year and got my art degree and concentration in graphic design. I always felt like I opted out, choosing graphic design, especially feeling so lost post-grad. I also felt like I opted out in terms of not going to a strict private art school even though I do hear a lot of artists say that you can grow with or without it. I'm still coming to terms with it and trying to move forward with where I'm at. I don't regret choosing graphic design and I still do paint and illustrate. Right now I'm keeping up with inktober, and that's good enough as a step in the right direction! Thank you for this video, I appreciate your point of view and the advice. If you have any advice on staying motivated, especially hearing that you don't listen to podcasts or have any distractions while working, I'd love to hear how you get in the zone! Thank you, I hope you have an awesome day!
@pyperbleucollective
@pyperbleucollective 4 года назад
Thank you for your message! almost everybody is affected by the post-grad existential crisis, don't be too hard on yourself! being practical is not 'opting-out', and it doesn't mean you have given up on anything. you are working within your limitations, and choosing what works best for you under those circumstances, and that's what matters the most.

@pyperbleucollective
@pyperbleucollective 4 года назад
wow! I am so envious;; I actually considered going to grad school for art history, but I feel like I am stronger as a visual artist ;-; it took me many years to appreciate history as a whole, I used to think science + technology was far superior because it meant humanity was focusing on the future and moving forward, but there is nowhere to go if you do not learn from past mistakes, and historians are like The Givers of our society, even though most of their labor is taken for granted/they are underfunded compared to STEM majors.

@@pyperbleucollective I think art history is often undervalued for how much the structures and history of art has been applied to modern life. And I want to potentially have a career in museum work itself. Art history is just so fun in general too :)

I went to art school a couple years ago, and I definitely agree with all your advice! In my case, I did not get to graduate because of financial + health reasons, and decided it was wiser to quit. I could not afford the school anymore and was really suffering from a bad burnout. Now, a whole year has passed, and I am ready to create again, and find joy in it again. I'm trying not to keep any regrets from my experience. I think it's important to recognize that art school will never be worth jeopardizing your well-being. If it means going into troublesome debt or risking your mental/physical health, it's important to know that you can take a break or quit school; your portfolio and your contacts are what matter the most, and technically you don't need art school to work on those, though it surely helps. Anyhow, I wish good luck to anyone still in art school, or who's in my situation and trying to figure out how to go pro without a degree, it's tough but never forget why you chose art in the first place! :)

Wow, this video just called me out severely ha.. I’m not in art college, but am leading up to it and I’m already struggling with the things you’ve listed; balancing friends, creativity as well as studying the typical shit at secondary school. I am a logical thinker but am also an over-thinker, so when I can’t sit down and draw like I used to I get so worked up, begin questioning myself, turn to distractions like RU-vid or my switch to drown out the thoughts and end up avoiding art for weeks and weeks. I’m trying my best to find a way to draw again, and hoping videos like these can help. I found a lot if your advice helpful, so I will try apply it in the future! Thank you ❤️

Thanks for the video, it was great as always! Right now I'm starting to post my art online and it's more stressful than I could imagine. It's weird! I look at my work and think that it is good enough, but when I'm about to post it I suddenly get self-contious, I start to feel that my works are not that presentable and interesting. I try to overcome this feeling, but I'm still unnerved. I won't stop posting, I've been drawing in secret for 4 years and I feel that my skill is high enough, but the stress is REAL!! I feel like this is just a period and it will get more easy in he future, but for now I'm dead... Maybe someone had similar experience with posting art online, I'd love to hear about your feelings during that time!

You look so down to earth and you have such a peaceful energy around you. To me, that's maturity and consequence of someone who took the time to analyze things and went through major transformations. Guess you're a butterfly already! 🐛🦋

Hey Lilith, first of all thank you for sharing your experience through your video. The tricks and tips you have about time management are valuable and overall the work life balance struggle in art school is very relatable. I see many friendships either spreading thin or dissolving due to me prioritizing work and academics. It can be challenging to keep a healthy balance in all the aspects that make up a exciting, rich living experience, friends, food, sleep, work, hobbies or time to think. I am writing this comment while being right in the maze of colliding assignments and approaching deadlines in Fashion 1, it is hard to have a good overview on what is going on in the bigger picture. Your video helped with that. Anyway, I am glad you shared this, I hope you are doing well, and keep going with what you do!

15:49 when you started talking about feel of failure and about living in the past or the future I really felt that >< my perfectionism has stunted my productive and ultimately trapped me,,, I've barely been able to make any art for months now because the blank page and thinking of messing up scares me so much TT thank you for sharing your experiences, it means a lot

I know I’m 7 months late but I guess in a way this video was recommended to me in the perfect time. I related to almost everything you said and it hit me so hard. I’m barely in my second year (I’m studying design) and I hearing you say all that you said was so comforting & also your advice is something that I will truly take into consideration. So seriously thank you so much for this video, it helped so much right now

I graduated in January from the business school at my university and I related to this video so much! I would tell my past self everything you said especially about the all-nighter culture! When I saw the subtitle about procrastinating because it was "cool", I definitely fell into that too and I wish I didn't because I feel like my grades and time management would've been so much better. And I probably wouldn't have had as many emotional breakdowns :'D But yeah I'm definitely going to improve myself now that I have a full-time job and trying to balance that along with my hobbies/creative passions is a little challenging. Thanks for this much needed video, Lilith ^^ btw what lip color are you wearing? It looks so good on you! hehe

Hi Lilith!! I’m a 10th grade student in Japan with my uni/college/career thoughts tilted over toward art. It was very nice to hear your experience, as I have just started researching schools and majors, your opinions have made influence to the decisions I am making right now. Thank you for your great video with honesty and humor, and I will wish you the best for your mental health and future. (*' ')*, ,)✨ P.S. Love the aesthetic you have in your background and I love your hair as well🖤🤍

thank you so much for this Lilith! I'm in my first year at Central Saint Martins studying graphic communication design and I relate so much to what you mentioned!! a lot of classmates have millions of followers/subscribers or amazing websites and the sense of competitiveness and not doing enough as others is really quite stressful. Especially with the idea and inspiration thing. Nothing is original anymore and it can be hard to come up with an idea that is different from your coursemates but also one that works. I actually have a job at uni which really helps and I'm hoping to get another one soon

- also a lot of my coursemates are a lot older than me (in their 20s)...I don't know any one my age (I'm 18) so it's hard for me to make friends and I need to find people I can share a flat/house with next year because I'm not allowed to stay in the dorms for another year 🙈 do you have any advice on how to approach people or cope with accomdation stress??

I'm sitting here working on my inktober drawings (i'm so many days behind!!!!). I feel as though I am rushing through my work nowadays, trying to get things done for the sake of them being done but not thinking too deeply about the process/concept. I'm doing a program in another city across the US so that's definitely taking a toll on/interrupting my work in some ways. Also, the university I attend isn't super focused on the arts, so in some ways I wish I had chosen a different path, but on the other hand I have two quarters left. I hope you and Annabelle are doing well otherwise, I've been watching her videos since I was a freshman in college and I can't wait to see more videos on this channel :-) thanks for reading

I graduated from my undergrad in east asian art history (avant-garde woodcuts and post-cultural rev. art) 2 years ago and currently working on graduate school apps for next fall after an unexpected gap year. I agree, taking care of the self, especially mentally health, is so crucial! After my dad passed a couple of months ago, I realized how grateful I was to be able to take the time to heal, rest, and focus on what I am actually interested vs trying to fulfill others' expectations of me i.e. go from undergrad straight into grad school. Much love to you Lilith and sending healing vibes✨
