This was so helpful. I had this exact problem. A piece of glass the size of my fingernail was jammed in the impeller and stopping the whole machine. This video was perfect in showing me how to safely take the thing apart and find the piece of glass and as I write this comment I am listening to my dishwasher happily humming along and cleaning the dishes. Thanks so much!
I’m a 59 year old housewife and got tired of washing the dishes by hand while we figured out what to do with our dishwasher, saw your video and viola! Shard of glass just like you said! Thanks!
Saved myself a bunch of time by using a shop vac to get the water out. Took about a minute and a half - no basting necessary. This was the answer to my problems. Thank you!
OMG thanks for this. Searching all over and figured would need a new pump. Gave up for a while and came back to it this afternoon and your video was the first to pop up. THIS WORKED!!!! Found a small screw and a piece of plastic. Ran a rinse then a drain and perfection. THANK YOU!!! I managed to get it fixed before the hubs comes home from work.
Just watched the video, it was spot on. When I pulled the impeller, I found a pice of glass that was stuck. I put everything back together ran a short cycle to verify no leaks. Thanks for the info. Great job
Our extended warranty on this model expired 1 month ago and my wife and promised each other dinner out if we could jointly fix this. We did! A fantastically clear, step-by-step approach to solving a problem that we would have previously called serviceman for. Videoing this must have been a bit tricky but the details were perfect. A huge thanks!
Thank you Scott! I thought this might be a big issue, but the drain motor was pinned with a soda pop top. Fifteen minutes and the dishwasher was working again. Thank you!

Greatly appreciated! My parents were talking about buying a new dishwasher! Thanks to your video I was able to find the problem in 15 minutes and save them hundreds!
Thank you! I mistakenly believed my pump's impeller was working properly since it discharged some water, and sometimes it would even discharge all of it. But most of the time it would give a couple of squirts and quit. Being at the end of my rope, I did as you demonstrated and disassembled the impeller, and lo and behold! It was full of toothpicks and bits of fibre and other rubbish. It's running like a champ again. Cheers!
Thanks for doing this video. I followed what you did step by step and found a piece of glass causing the impeller to misbehave . I removed it and it worked like new. My wife is happy again.
Dang, your damn door covers up the most important part of this video, getting the motor off. I’m stuck at this point. It looks like I might have two clips on both sides and it doesn’t want to budge. :(
I can't thank you enough for this video. You saved me from having to hire a repair man or get a new dishwasher. I was so stressed over this and it was so easy to follow. Thank you so much!!!

A THOUSAND THANKS! This was SO HELPFUL, as I have the exact same dishwasher. It's a joy to be able to access problems without having to entirely remove dishwasher from alcove. This easy-to-follow video and your narration are a GODSEND for someone like me to follow along -- I have very low-level mechanical ability/fix-it skills, and when my spouse ridiculously claims the clog isn't from the drain, but instead is caused by the way dishes are loaded or washed, I can rejoice in not having to ask for help that might take him weeks for follow-thru. Now, instead of a puzzling maze of gadgetry below the dishwasher, I can see where the drain hoses are and know how to check for properly operating drain parts. The feeling that I actually fixed an appliance for the first time in my life is just WOW! A holiday donation is on my list. U rock!!!
Ya, lucky you. In the Superba model not so easy. No access to components from bottom . Drain hose and water inlet . Getting sick of chasing out this problem. Started out with short to terminal connectors to motor to now not draining..
Like everyone else here, you saved me- THANK YOU!! Took it apart per your instructions and found a broken piece of plastic rack that had somehow made it's way through the filter. Saved me a hefty plumbing bill I'm sure. Appreciate your help!
Hey Scott the Fixit guy, Thanks sooo much! I followed your instructions, found some glass beside the pump but the worst was the hose to the sink; completely blocked! Now I know why our dishes weren't coming out clean for a while now. I hiked up my Wetvac to the 'blow' end, blocked the rest of the crevice tool with my hand and blew the junk out of the hose! Hooked the dishwasher back up and is working like a charm! You saved me days of manual dish washing and a sh#*load of money! So I put 20$ into your coffee fund. Cheers!
It is Christmas morning, and the dishwasher totally stopped working. Didn't completely drain, and lights on front were not working. Didn't make any sounds. Followed these instructions exactly and found a shard of glass (from a Christmas Eve wine glass?) caught in the impeller...precisely like in this video. DW now working perfectly. Christmas Day is saved! Thank you!
Excellent video! Have been chasing this problem for weeks and already replaced the dryer motor. Turns out it was a bread bag tie stuck in the drain motor! Thank you!
Thank you so much. This video helped solve our problem. There was gunk buildup on the other end of the hose, at garbage disposal. Blowing into the drain pipe had no movement and that was the eureka moment for me. I couldn’t have figured it out without your help!
Thank you very much. Your video was spot on and you described everything perfectly. I had the same problem as you, a piece of glass was stuck in the impeller. You saved me $170 which is the minimum charge for the appliance guy to even come out.
Thank you for your very detailed video. My problem was exactly as you encountered here-broken glass jamming the prop for the drain pump. You saved me a costly service call, and I appreciate it!
Just want to say a big thank-you for posting this concise and accurate video. Based on your information I was able to get to the pump (- didn't even have to take it off) by removing the drain hose as you demonstrated and found an elastic band wrapped around the impeller. A pair of needle-nosed pliers and a pair of scissors quickly resolved the problem. Thanks again!
Thanks for the video. Took out some small twigs out of the pump but still not draining. Turned out to be the looong and twisted hose plugged by mushy stuff. Glad hubby thought of using the air pump for inflatable kayak so we blew the stuff out. Wouldn’t know how to start without your video!
This video was perfect--I took the drain pump off as you described and found a piece of plastic tangled in the impeller. Now I can cancel my appliance appointment I made. Thanks!
Thank you. I’m a Bosch person and learned how to do that but I didn’t think of digging underneath and pulling all that apart. But yes. Glass. Thank you.
My Kitchenaid Dishwasher stopped draining water and was leaving a tub full of water. Checking the Hose under sink showed nothing. I have a wet/dry Shop vacume that enabled me to get all the water out of the Diswasher tub and get things dry really quick. then took the steps shown here and found a piece of trim from a pot in the Pump impeller preventing it from Spinning. Dishwasher seems to be doing fine now....thank you Scott.
🤩Thank you so much. I had a different KitchenAid model and had to pull it out from under the counter but that is exactly what the problem was. Wish I could post a picture here.
Thanks, your were right on. Followed all the steps and yep a piece of glass in pump just as you have shown. For a person not mechanically aptitude you made it easy again thanks.
Hooray, this video was brilliant! Followed all the steps, and…Got the pump (one of the blades was broken off,)ordered new part from Amazon ($29.95) reattached pump & hose in less than 2 min, fabulous! PS I am a 73 year old woman
FANTASTIC! Thank you! Handy man pulled out the washer, ran it, then announced it needed a new drain pump. Thankfully you had this very helpful DIY........oh yeah, piece of glass about the size bean dropped out as soon as I took off the drain hose.
Wow Scott - thank you so much!!! Like the others here, you SAVED US HUGE!!! What a great video. Clear, concise, completely on point. I ended up also having a shard of glass, in addition to a plastic and wire produce bag clip. Great work man.
AMAZING dude!! #1)no clogged filter #2) Checked impeller housing, no issue #3) Checked the long clear drainage hose, no issue #4) Scum buildup in the black pvc piping nozzle end, that juts out from the sink drain for the dishwasher attachement. Simply passed a screwdriver into the nozzle to remove scum. We are good to go again :) Problem solved! Keep up the amazing video, you are the man!
I just watched your video and then performed this exact repair while replaying it as I went through the process to the “T”! Pulled a 5/8” diameter piece of a ceramic bowl out of the pump. Bravo!
I followed this video and I I found the exact same issue. A shard of wine class got stuck in the same spot. Got it out and the machine is running like new. Thank you.
THANK YOU!!! I cannot thank you enough! While trying to avoid Covid-19 and care for my medically complicated, high-risk family, our dishwasher stopped working. The chance to avoid a service call saved me money and potential disease exposure! Unlike others, I found not glass but an assortment of random debris including hair. I have no clue how the spindle that holds the impeller blade became so encased in hair. Using a dental tool it took me 1.5 hrs. to remove the hair from the spindle. Afterward, after reattaching the drain tube, I realized that it's a good idea to pour a small amount of water into the dishwasher to check for leakage before trying to run a normal dishwashing load. (I realized this after I realized that the hose clamp wasn't in the right spot.)
Thank you!! I didn't know what to do as dishwasher just halted after a few seconds and that noise just felt like something was definitely in there. I found a rotten screw and finding the source of that is another story but we're back in business!
Deserve a huge thank you for this video. Glass and a fake nail in ours. I struggled getting the impellers housing off with that tab!! Any tips for the future?
Worked! Clear & concise. Had a glass shard in my impeller. Only thing I would add would be to take a drain rooter and unclog the drain line. Tried that first, but it wasn't the problem. Thanks for making this.
Hey thanks for the inspiration! What mine was is the drain hose where it connected to the sink drain...it was plugged solid with white gunk (soap residue and grease). I simply removed the pipe and voila...used a screw driver and pushed the gunk out...done.
Thank you so much! I just needed to bang on the pump a whole bunch to clear a chunk of grease out of it and she fired right back up and drained after I tried literally everything else including snaking it 🙏 This is a very helpful video 🤗 If your microwave or clothes washer machine ever dies hit up my channel for those easy fixes!
Thank goodness for this video. I’m sure I have a piece of glass in there as well. Getting ready to drain the water so I can rewatch the video. I have a Kitchen Aid too . Fingers crossed.
The exact same thing happened to me as in your video. Thanks to you I was able to fix it in under an hour and I also found a small leak with the water line, a quick tightening and all good. Thanks for the video, you saved us an expensive bill!
Thank you for the video. It was very easy to follow. I went through all the steps, but there was no debris anywhere. I'm wondering if I need a new motor. Any tips on how to tell if the motor is bad?
This worked like a freakin charm! Thanks for posting this. I had nearly the exact same issue, and so pumped to have this video to guide me through the process.
Awesome Ryan, I’m so glad it worked and saved you time and money 😊 I hope you’ll click here to support us by joining our Channel: ru-vid.com/show-UCGpInAejvpfVVE4FHB_L-Dgjoin
Excellent video. Cleaning the bottom of the Kitchenaid dishwasher I and saw that is itsn't draining completely. I'm going to check the drain per your video to see if I too have a simple fix. Thanks!
@@QuickAndEasy5MinuteAppliance Hi. So I was able to get as far as removing the drain hose to check for debris and look into the pump "outlet" (it was clear) and spin the impeller. I was not able to remove the pump as my model is a bit different. (KDFE104DSS4). My issue may be "normal". There is about an inch to 1.5 of an inch of water in the drain reservoir after the dishwasher runs. The dishwasher get mold inside and I wondered if the water being in the reservoir would be a possible cause of the mold. I cleaned everything (filter, screen and dishwasher). So time will tell. Thanks for following up!
Worked like a champ! Mines a little different probably because it’s not the same vintage, but with your help I was able to fix it. There was a piece of wine glass wedged against the impeller that kept it from spinning. Lot quieter now (haha). My impeller motor was at an angle to the from and the drain for the sump was higher than the bottom of sump and has a “wall” in front of it with openings on either side, guess to keep stuff out. Also I do not need to rotate the motor housing to get it off the housing has a padlock symbol pointed at a tab and the whole housing comes off which holds the motor to the flange on the main pipe. So it just pulls straight out, watch the o-rings. The only bit that was tricky was aligning the housing to make sure it was over the flange and that the motor and the flange were aligned so that the electrical cable could mate with the circuit board. So you have to rotate the motor first and then snap on the housing. Put it mostly together then test, then put the cover back on. Thanks! This was a huge help, but I thought I might offer my experience in case some one else has my model style. It’s a 2018 kitchen aid washer.
This was the exact fix I needed thanks so much! I had a piece of glass stuck in that little drain motor....which turned out to be multiple pieces, but eventually I got it all cleaned out
I'm a new widow and I've had to learn quickly about fixing things. I really appreciate your video! When I detached the rinse hose, alot of water came out. I can't seem to find the other side under there to pull it all off and see if there is an obstruction. Any ideas? Tia!
Great video ! I'd like to add that my issue was at the other end of the drainage hose near the sink plumbing and there was a clog there. Popcorn seeds = bad! Technically it was my neighbors issue but this video really helped, thanks a bunch!
Thanks for a nice video, I clean it out and it works on manual drain button, but if I put it on wash, the water is staying in and does not drain, would be a control board?
Thanks you very much for making this video available! It was perfect as I also have a Kitchenaid (looks like the same model too) and it would not drain AND I am not mechanically included (not at ALL!). It gave me the confidence to make me try and fix it. I had trouble getting the impeller off because I couldn't locate the tab supposedly holding it in place but after some pulling and twisting I was able to get it off. At first I didn't see anything blocking the exposed hole and the impeller spun just fine. I took the opportunity to suck, then blow, then suck the opening with a shopvac. I then felt around the floor underneath the hole and found a seed. It might have fallen out when I took off the impeller. In any case, I believe it was what caused the noise I was hearing when I tried to run the drain function (this noise disappeared and the motor wasn't operating at all after a while). I put everything back together and everything worked! I celebrated the occasion of actually being able to fix something! And just before we had a party of six for dinner, so I wouldn't have to wash all those dishes by hand! So, again, thanks for giving me the motivation to fix it. It also made me decide to (in the future) buy a dishwasher that makes access to the pump easier than making your get under your machine and only give you a few inches of clearance to work with! Bosche 300 for example, has such a feature.
And I want to add that it just means one less dishwasher added to landfill somewhere because a simple seed blocked the drain pump. I wonder how many dishwashers end up in landfill because of something so simple, when the dishwasher is otherwise in good operating order.
Yep , I’m proud of you Eric😊 Such a good feeling to fix something all by yourself👍 I bet around 80% of the appliances in the landfill have simple 20.00 periphreal parts that need to be replaced
Well, you just saved me probably hours of trying to do it myself, a lot of profanities, and finally an expensive service call. I had a rubber gasket for something stuck in my impeller and now it’s working perfectly. Thank you!
Thanks! Exactly what I needed. However, what I found were about 10 bb bearings that came off the slides from the top rack. Unless I replace the slides, I suspect this will happen again.
Thank’s So Much, I’m so glad it worked and saved you time and money 😊 I hope you’ll click here to support us by joining our Channel: ru-vid.com/show-UCGpInAejvpfVVE4FHB_L-Dgjoin You’ll get Live Appliance help when ever you need it. Hi, My Kitchenaid dishwasher was not draining. I watched this video, and it was VERY helpful. There was a piece of glass in his pump. Guess what was in mine, A piece of F N glass!!!!! Couldn't believe it. All good!!
Not sure if this is my problem but my machine started partially draining recently. Doesn't do it every time but 2 out of 6-8 times it does. I'll at least check it all over thanks for the video!
Thank you for posting this simple solution. Had the exact same problem, a piece of glass was preventing the motor from spinning. Interestingly enough, the last time glass broke inside the dishwasher must have been over 5 months ago - i guess it took that long to make its way into the motor's blades.
