Our 1998 KitchenAid dishwasher for the first time ever didn't fully drain,,, fortunately I found this handy little clip by Liz... step by step i pulled it all apart, finally deep down in the depths of the washer in the chopper area, I pulled out a big chunk of glass, a chicken bone, misc hard bits of stuff, and what looked like perhaps an accumulation of bottle labels. mush.. because I had access to the garden hose I brought it into the kitchen and ran a small bit of pressure back up the lines, put the washer all back together and its fixed !! it always amazes me that our appliances from 1998 still perform as they should, and they still look good! ..... stuff made today has a very short lifespan.......... Thanks Liz!
OMG ! I use your last trick without detaching any part of the dishwasher : Close the dishwasher and press Cancel ! It drained!!!! bravo !!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for a detail video 🎉
This was great. Our dishwasher was not draining and followed this, cleaned everything, cleared the goop, now it is draining. Calling the repairmen had to be $150-200, so thank you. So glad it was not the pump.
This was very helpful. There aren't many videos on these particular models. It turns out my problem was a clogged screen after the grinder. I thought for sure I was going to end up having to buy a new pump, but nope.
Liz, Thank you. I really appreciate you "taking the plunge" and jumping in to tackle this AND TAKING YOUR TIME to share it with others. I thought it was GREAT and helped me IMMENSELY! Between your video and a couple others that touched on other topics, I was able to get back up and running without a service call. I really appreciate your time, guts, effort, and willingness to share!
Thank you so much for this information ! Worked exactly as you stated . Mine was clicking and not draining . Found glass and a bunch of other yuck down by the chopper . Put it all back together and WOW , works great !
Thanks so much! Your video gave me exactly the right information to solve my dishwasher's draining problem. Debris was clogging the outflow of water. Instructions very clear (despite the low audio).
Great video. Some comments here are from rude toolbags. The sound issue doesn’t matter because you did an excellent job demonstrating how to do this and probably saved me at least a hundred bucks. I have the same washer and had the same issue. Your video was a great step by step instruction for us laypeople. I could care less if you don’t know technical terms. That doesn’t help unclog a dishwasher. I did everything you did. There was lots of gunk in every crevice. In addition, I disconnected both sides of the garbage disposal tube and cleaned both sides. I think the issue was that pipe was pretty clogged, but it didn’t hurt to do everything you did. I like your video and I would rather see you (a normal person) than some condescending fat middle aged Plummer guy.
This guidance was spot on, thank you. Turn volume up to high and it's just what is needed. This came apart exactly as described - my model has an additional blue vertical panel along the rear wall that snaps off easily to rotate and remove the "piping" that runs up the rear wall to the top. I used T20 and T15 srewdrivers and it worked fine without drill; easy to remove small'ish screws.
Hey you guys at least she is trying to share what works for her dishwasher - maybe she's not a sound tech but she's a lot better dishwasher repairperson than a lot of us or we wouldn't be looking on here to find out how to fix it! Lighten up Geesh!
Thank you very much, I have this model and couldnt figure out to to remove the cover on the bottom. Found lots of junk in there. If you have standing water again, something I had found in another video on how to drain it is by closing the door and pressing and holding the Clear button. It will kick the drain pump in to let you pump the water out
so my dishwasher also drains when you hit the cancel/drain button and close the door. what does that mean? i mean it can drain but just doesn't drain when it's supposed to.
Liz, thanks for this video. I have this exact model, so it provided me with the detail that i needed. Want to get down into the motor on the next video. As for the schmucks (read: complainers) below: you do know enough to ignore them right? After all, they didn't put forth any effort to help the rest of us. Like you did.
I liked this. You're so handy! It gave me the guts to start taking apart my own dishwasher. So thanks. (And I hope you made the other video you promised, because I haven't found the blockage yet.)
Thank you. Your advice was perfect. I woke up this morning to a puddle on the kitchen floor that was clearly due to water not draining. Other videos showed different brands with easily accessible filters - but not KitchenAid. The manual was useless - their 1-liner for troubleshooting "water remains in the dishwasher" was "Is the cycle complete?" The one tool I needed to get from the hardware store was a Torx-head screwdriver. After that I walked through your video step by step and it did the trick. Two things I would add: using a syringe to remove the water is ok, but syphoning is much faster - I used a couple of feet of tube from a fish tank draining into a saucepan. Also, the clip at the end of the upper rack roller bar has a tiny tongue - a gentle push from a screwdriver blade will let it slip out immediately. Note to myself: check dishes for olive pits before loading into dishwasher.
Good job, I know I’m late to the game, but I have some suggestions. For one, a “bucket vac” wet/dry vacuum is a vacuum head that fits on a 5 gallon paint bucket. It’s handy for stuff like dishwashers, or the last bit of water in the toilet tank when replacing the valve. Cost is $20 at Home Dep plus $5 for a bucket if you don’t have one. Second, you need a multimeter to test solenoids and electrical pumps. 99% of all homeowner electrical tests of parts can be done using a simple continuity test. Set the tester to Ohms (the omega symbol) and touch the leads of the tester to each other. Some testers will have a continuity setting where the tester will beep when the leads are connected. Whatever the read out is with the tester leads apart from each other- that’s what you don’t want- no connection, no continuity. If you read any ohms, or have continuity, the part is usually good unless it is tripping a breaker. Also, keep those drain hoses clean! Grease will clog it over time, so put your dishwasher on a schedule of running bleach through an empty washer cycle every 6 months or a year, or remove and clean the drain hose. The pumps will last longer with routine maintenance!
Amazing video, all is here and useful! Great job and thank you so much! Thanks to you, I dared to take care of my dishwasher at 11pm instead of waiting until tomorrow.
I followed your instructions and able to fix the drainage problem! For those who has problem unscrew the screws ( I do not have electrical screw driver) try using Ellen key. Thank you so much for the u- tube, I not only feel empowered, gain new respect from my hubby ( who is a complete geek) not to mention you also save us $$$
Thanks Liz! I had no idea cancel drained the dishwasher and that ended up being our problem. For you mean people.. yeah the sound is off in the very beginning but get over it, it doesn't impact the video at all. I don't see you on here helping people so keep your nastiness to yourself.
Thank you so much for this video! Looked like there was gunk clogging the cover of the chopper in my situation. Currently running my dishwasher to see if this fixed the problem. Thanks so much!
I love this - but know this is not a pro video. This is something shot by a woman by herself with a baby crying the background. It, paradoxically, gives me great confidence because she does not have special skills or special tools or a camera crew,. Well done.
First off thanks a bunch for this, this saved me a call to a handy man (ps, I am not handy at all lol). I found bones and plastic clogging my drain! And secondly, my wife was wondering what I was watching because all she heard was the baby in the background going 'Dadda dadda dadda dadda' lol
Doesn’t drain - my problem was a new sink disposal. The disposal installer forgot to remove the dishwasher drain plug from the new disposals. New disposals come with this plug installed. (Kitchens that don’t have dishwashers then this plug is a must)
Super helpful, but a word of caution. The "chopper" is spring loaded and pops out easily. Don't let this happen. It is very difficult to put back in, and if you don't get it just right, the cover doesn't go on right.
Yes theres bad audio, but i was able to fix my dishwasher. My only extra tip is to use a screwdriver to pop open the large round filter because I cleaned out a bunch of gunk in there too.
Mitch Farrar I’m still here! Dishwasher still working fine. Sorry I never made the follow up video. It turned out the pump was in fine working order (which I only learned after tearing up the floor boards to remove the washer - previous house owner installed a new kitchen floor that prevents the washer from sliding out from under the counter 🤬) but there was goop jamming up the water drain hose. I managed to siphon the goo out and things have been flowing fine ever since.
@@LizCourtney liZ. My Condolences to your family for the untimely death you suffered. We were all so looking forward to the follow up video of the dishwasher pump that you promised… So unfortunate of your untimely death. Rest in peace.
Turns out the drain pump was fine, which I only learned after tearing up the floor to get the dishwasher out from under the counter. (Previous house owner installed a new floor that was on TOP of the old floor and the washer no longer slides out like it should). Problem ended up being the drain hose was clogged. I removed it and gave it a good flushing until all the goo came out.
You said the audio was going to get better? I got all the way to the end and it didn't improve :( Maybe redub the video so you don't have to remake the whole thing :)
She is a house wife lighten up people . Bet yr high maintenance broad doent attempt to fix / repair household equip.? Yes the audio wasn't great but so what? Hahaha .... It is just a basic tutorial on the basics. Alot of people dont know what to do .... and pay $$$ to have repair MAN to fix. A+ for effort!
Thank you Kelly. And I’ll note that I’m not only a wife, I work full time. So everyone who complained about the audio can just give me a break. It’s incredible I found time to make this video let alone fix the dang dishwasher.
