For the child interested in animal therapy: I work in the equine therapy field (ran my own program for children with psychiatric disorders specifically). If your daughter is interested in equine therapy, and she's not already, I would seek out volunteer opportunities at a therapeutic riding center now. I would also highly recommend encouraging her to get PATH Int. Certified vs. a college degree in equine facilitated therapies. I have a Bachelor's of Science and wish I had saved my money and just gotten PATH certified, as that's what program are looking you to have prior to being hired. You may already know all of this, but I thought I'd share!

We've done most of those! The writing course is a lot but I love it. We only ever did book 1 and did it twice. Works great with whatever they're reading! I like that history course for simplification but it was pretty dry and ended up feeling like going through the motions. Definitely would "beef it up" to keep interest. Logic is so great too! That’s Awsome your daughter is learning ASL. Will help in many jobs being able to communicate with deaf people or if you meet someone who is deaf. I’m in uk & learned a bit of BSL (British sign language) . The alphabet was in the back of of my school diary/planner in secondary school (age 11-16). Then when I went to college I had to take a deaf awareness course as part of my care course I was doing so I bought a sign language dictionary and brushed up on my alphabet & learned a handful of words. I used to talk to a deaf lady in my street, a deaf person at college and eventually deaf customers who came in shops I was working at when I was working in retail. I keep meaning to go back and learn more sign language so I should probably dig out my dictionary and learn more. Maybe I might as my New Years resolution next year?

We did part of Jump In from Sharon Watson and I was really impressed, so I've been already planning to do Illuminating Literature with my daughter next year. However, I'm now wondering if it's more teacher intensive than I anticipated. I was assuming it was hands off, except for marking or assisting when needing, like Jump In was. Do the parents need to do any teaching with it, or is that just if you want to add in extra instruction? One thing I really like about Sharon Watson is she offers so many free writing prompts. I appreciate this video! Thank you :)

Great video. My 7th grader is using Sharon Watson's Jump In writing this year and loving it. I also have When Worlds Collide ready for another year. There is also a great looking course called The Power in Your Hands, and a literature/writing course Their Blood Tingled based on C S Lewis Narnia which sounds amazing. However I am also really interested in The Lost Tools of Writing so look forward to your thoughts on it as the year progresses, especially in comparison to IEW. I have not used Shorman and didn't realize there were science courses too. The Earth Science looks really good. Again, will await your thoughts and review. Many thanks for making this video. At my public elementary school, at 5th grade we had half year Spanish, half year French to introduce the students to both languages. I liked French in that year, so from 6th grade till end of high school, I chose French. I think its a good idea to get acquainted with a foreign language before going head in to the actual course, so its easier in the long run. Maybe my experience is on the earlier side, but at what time do students usually start a foreign language? (My parents is Japanese, so I also went to a weekend Japanese language school since 1st grade).

I took ASL in high school and (at least where we are located, in WA state) most universities do accept it as a foreign language, you just need to have more years completed for them to count it! For example, here in WA universities require two years of a foreign language, but three years of ASL. If you start early and get 3-4 “years” of ASL in I’d say your child(ren) should have no problem! It’s also a VERY good skill to have on a resume! 😉 ❤

@dielaura_
@dielaura_ Год назад
I find these videos so interesting as I live in a country where homeschooling isn't allowed - and while I don't know what the requirements in US schools are, one thing I thought was a little funny: in a lot of European countries it's normal to start learning a foreign language (mostly English) in grade 5 or 6 (when you're 11/12 years old) and at least for us in Germany you usually add a second language (French, Spanish or Latin for the most part) in grade 8 or 9 (15/16 years old). Is this not at all a thing in the US? Just a genuine question. 😁
@username00009
@username00009 Год назад
In the US, children usually have their first opportunity to take either Spanish or French in middle school, which is either grades 6-8 or 7-9 depending on the school district (grade 6 is 11/12 years old). Foreign language isn’t usually required until high school, and even then I don’t think it’s required by all states for graduation, but it’s definitely required for college admissions as far as I’ve seen. There has been a trend in the past 10+ years to start foreign language at younger ages, but they’re somewhat laughable. My child doesn’t remember any of the Spanish taught in elementary school (grades 1-6) despite having already demonstrated the ability to speak two languages (having grown up in a bilingual household).
