I have a 2003 mercury mountaineer everything‘s good no codes 👍except for the last two weeks 😂 every now and again when I start it won’t start for a couple minutes then I restart then it cranks over no problems doesn’t shut off while driving just when you try to start it up. has been happening for two weeks and today the service soon engine light came on yellow . can you help me with some info on that👍
Us who own explorers/Fords avoid buying vehicles with the 4L SOHC like the plaque. 90% of the time if they are for sale it's because they got a quote for replacing the rear timing guides which are plastic, prone to failure, have had several revisions (none of which are use metal that's not going to break) and require pulling the engine.
I have a 2004 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer edition 4.6 V8 motor crank but won't start change the spark plugs coil packs starter alternator battery and oil pump sensor but does crank over but won't start
@@OnlineAutoRepairVideos just like the key to maintaining a timing belt engine is to replace it every 100k miles, the key to a chain driven engine is to always change the oil. Clean fresh oil is key!
@@OnlineAutoRepairVideos the timing chain guides are made of plastic and get brittle with age, Lack of oil or high temps. It's a non interference motor but jumping time tends to bend the valves. On another note I bought a 03 4.0 for $500 and they though it had jumped timing. Turns out it needed a new fuel pump. Got me a great deal 🤷♂️
I never knew that Len!! Ford had to lose their mind to put a chain in the back of the engine! If people only knew this BEFORE they bought these trucks, Ford wouldn't sell even one!! Have you done one before?
Tim doesn’t that agent has three timing chain The same thing happened to me with the same kind of vehicle on the New Jersey Turnpike it just turned off then I junketit those timing chain they are not easy to deal with

@@OnlineAutoRepairVideos actually three on the front and one on the back. It's a big pain in the ass and there is a special timing procedure and two specific tools needed to do the job. First and last time.
Got a ranger 4.0 that sometimes doesn't start but a few hours later it'll start and run for a week or 2 b4 doin it again. I replaced the camshaft position sensor and still doin it. Seems like this problem happens on the hotter days. Seems like you really know your stuff so do you think it's the fuel pump going bad or something else? Thanks

did u change the timing chains? i had a guy charge me 1200$ to do my timing took him a month! i got the truck back it ran good for a week then i was driving it was under power and i heard a bang and the engine will crank but wont start he said check the fuel pump i checked it and fuel is being sent to the injectors! do you think he fucked something up?
Me and my brother did this job almost two years ago on my 03 ford explorer 4.0. It's actually 4 timing chains on this vehicle not 3.. At the time the car was making all kind of noises which made it easy for us to know that timing chains were the problem but now 2 years later the car just stalled while driving and didn't started back up, did all the tests and seems like in ur video it will be either chains again or valves. This engine is garbage..
Hey Tim, I gt 2002 ford explorer v6... No start but when I spray the starter fluid on the throttle body it will start. Do u think fuel pomp is the problem? Thank u. And where the part 2 I'm curious to see that back timing.

I'm learning (from the comments) that this is a common issue with these 4.0 engines, and the chains, guides, and tentioners go bad, but you have to remove the engine to do the job! I will NEVER own one of these!!
I'm not too familiar with this design, but we found out there are three chains, and yes one is in the back. I'm kind of looking forward to doing this job now because I'm curious as to this sucky design!
That engine is known for bad timing chains. It was a design flaw by Ford. The older explorers had it quite a bit. Classic symptoms are a loud clatter noise on startup. I've never seen a 2003 have it though. That's why I prefer the v8 models. With the 5.0.
It's the guides that fail and the 5.4L has the same issue (among others). But the decision to have a rear timing chain requiring pulling the engine to replace was simply foolish. The cost to fix these vs the vehicle value virtually make these throw away vehicles once they fail.
