Makes sense, the shinkansen only goes 130kph between Ueno and Omiya anyway, the solution to adding more shinkansens could be to turn them around at Omiya instead of Tokyo.
This is beautiful, so many trains and they all look so good. Beautiful colors. Its seems omiya has more capacity than Tokyo station for northern bound shinkansens. I wish there were more platforms at Tokyo to allow for even more service. It seems the solution could be to turn more trains around at Omiya?
Thanks. Constructing new tracks from Omiya Station to Shinjuku Station would cost 700 billion yen. This plan was shelved due to being too costly. A cheaper solution would be to increase the number of trains that turn back at Omiya.
@shio_vanilla I was at Omiya a few weeks ago catching the Kagayagi train to Tsuruga. I had not noticed before that there indeed are 6 tracks for shinkansen trains at Omiya which can easilly make it a secondary starting/termination point for shinkansen. Japan is different, I noticed other countries like in China there are multiple seperate stations where high speed trains terminate. Omiya could certainlly be used to ease congestion at Tokyo station by having some trains origionate at Omiya. Shinjuku indeed is to far and expensive to add as a secondary Gateway. I think Omiya is best suited for that. JR East should look at Omiya more if wanting to add new service, as everything does not have to be at Tokyo station. Even the linear Shinkansen will go to Shinagawa, I wonder if Omiya can be more of a northern Gateway to Tokyo.
