今天要和各位講的陀羅尼
Today I'm going to talk about dharani.
什麼叫作陀羅尼呢
What is called dharani?
就是密咒
It's incantation.
這個有時候不好解釋的
Sometimes it's inexplicable.
這個咒語就等於是心裡的語言
Incantation is a language of the mind
要心心相印
to be transmitted from mind to mind
不是口頭說的
rather than in words.
所以在佛教裡面陀羅尼咒
There are many dharanis in Buddhism.
楞嚴咒、大悲咒
Surangama Mantra,
the Great Compassion Mantra,
十小咒、往生咒
the ten small mantras,
Rebirth in Pureland Mantra.
這個咒語很多人
These incantations
都念了很熟悉的很多
are familiar to many.
最簡單的
The simplest one
常常一般人都懂得
which even ordinary people know is
唵嘛呢叭吽
"om mani padme hum".
這麼簡單的就是一句咒語
It's a single-line incantation.
就是咒語它就念了
People who recite it
心物相應
tune their mind to things
就能感應道交
so that they get good vibrations.
舉這個例子說
Let me give you an example.
有一位老太太
There was an old lady
是居住在鄉間
who lived in the countryside.
也沒有明師指導
She had never been instructed
念這一個唵嘛呢叭吽
by a teacher in the recitation of
om mani padme hum.
它最後這一個吽
Mind that the last character
is pronounced hum.
口旁邊是一個牛
In Chinese it consists of "mouth"
and "cow" (niu).
她不知道怎麼念
She didn't know how to pronounce "hum".
不過我們中國人
When Chinese come across words
they don't know how to pronounce,
一個字你不會念 念半個
they tend to pronounce
念半邊
part of the character.
所以她就唵嘛呢叭牛
So she recited: om mani padme niu,
唵嘛呢叭牛
om mani padme niu.
她每念一句唵嘛呢叭牛
When she recited om mani padme niu,
she would count
她就拿一顆豆子到這邊來
how many times she recited by taking
a bean from one basket to the other.
她每天要念一斗豆子
Every day she needed to recite
大概算個萬千遍
ten thousand times,
念了大概十年、二十年
and this went on for ten
or even twenty years.
終於有了感應
Eventually she got some response.
她不要用手再去拿這個豆子
Since then she no longer needed
to count it manually. Why?
只要她一念唵嘛呢叭牛
Because when she recited
om mani padme niu,
這個豆子就跳一顆
the beans will jump by themselves
唵嘛呢叭牛就跳一顆
to the other basket.
這有一天
One day,
有一個法師經過這一個地方
a monk walked past her abode.
沒有地方住宿
He had nowhere to put up for the night.
聽說這個老婆婆是信佛教的
Since he heard that the old lady
was a Buddhist,
就到她家裡借住了
so he spent the night in her house.
晚上睡覺了
When he was about to sleep,
聽到老婆婆在佛前
he heard her standing
in front of the Buddha statue
唵嘛呢叭牛
reciting om mani padme niu,
唵嘛呢叭牛
om mani padme niu.
奇怪 在念什麼
He wondered what she was reciting,
唉 錯啦
and soon found that she said it wrong.
唵嘛呢叭吽
It should be om mani padme hum.
怎麼念成牛呢
How come you say niu?
老太太 妳念錯啦
Granny, you said it wrong.
唵嘛呢叭吽 不是牛
It should be om mani padme hum,
not niu.
老太太這時一起心動念
The old lady thought to herself:
唉呀 糟糕
Aiya! My goodness!
法師的話當然是對的
What he said is right.
我怎麼念錯了呢
How come I say it wrong!
就改正
So she corrected herself
把它唵嘛呢叭牛
by no longer saying
om mani padme niu,
從此就念唵嘛呢叭吽
but instead, om mani padme hum.
豆子不跳了
Since then, the beans never jumped.
為什麼
Why?
她的信心動搖了
Her faith wavered
有了分別
and she made distinctions.
所以這個就不靈了
So the mantra was never efficacious
不專 不專精
and responsive.
所以我們念佛、念法、念僧
When we're mindful of the Buddha,
Dharma and Sangha,
所以念要一心不亂
be single-mindedly.
這個念咒語
Recite incantation
就是身、口、意要都
physically, verbally and mentally.
身體禮拜
Make prostration physically,
口頭稱念
chant verbally,
心裡觀想
and contemplate mentally.
一句阿彌陀佛也是咒語
The single phrase Amitofo
is also incantation
這樣子會有感應的
that could give you a response.
希望大家能可以三業相應
Hope you gain the physical,
verbal and mental responses.
