Really love your intro to touring in Kaohsiung. Adding to your highlights in Kaohsiung, I would also recommend the Pier-2 Art Centre. And from there you can take a ride on the Circular light rail (環狀輕軌) to get the best overview of Kaohsiung harbor and the avant garde buildings around the harbor bay.

Sun Yat-sen University is my former school. The secret beach you mentioned was my favorite place when I was a student!
