今天和各位講參話頭
Today I'm going to talk about
the contemplation of a head phrase,
參話頭這一句話是禪門的
which is a Chan
一句專有名詞
proper noun.
要參話頭
What is to contemplate a head phrase?
就是禪門它重在要觀照自己
Chan Buddhism says it is to
retrospect oneself,
去追究自性
look into one's self nature,
最初的那個是什麼
and find out what one initially is.
所以說話一個話頭
So a head phrase is for the sake
為什麼這個原因
of finding out the reason why.
比方說
Say,
有名的中國禪門的話頭
below are some famous Chinese
head phrases of Chan Buddhism:
念佛是誰
Who is the name-chanter?
你念佛
When you chant,
念佛是誰
who is the one who chants?
誰在念佛
Who is doing the name-chanting?
你說我在念
You may say I'm the one who chants.
我是什麼
I'm who?
我是某某人
I'm me so-and-so.
你這個人是從哪裡來
Where did you come from?
你這麼一直追問下去
You keep asking questions like this
到最後真的找一個頭
and aim to find out the source ("head").
找不到
But usually you can't.
等到你找到了
Yet, when you do find it,
啊 豁然大悟
you'll suddenly become awakened.
比較有名的話頭
Other famous head phrases include -
除了念佛是誰
besides "Who is the name-chanter?"-
父母未生我之前
"Before my parents gave birth to me,
是何我的本來面目
what was my original nature?"
我這個人
I'm a person.
現在叫什麼名字
What is my name called now?
是父親叫什麼 母親叫什麼
What is my father called?
What is my mother called?
我哪裡人
Where am I from?
但是在父母沒有生我之前
Before my parents gave birth to me,
我是什麼
who was I?
我是在天上呢
Was I in heaven
我過去也是在人間呢
by then, or was I in the human world,
我還是在地獄、是畜生呢
in hell, or in the animal realm?
我是從哪裡來呢
Where did I come from?
父母未生我之前
Before my parents gave birth to me,
你能找到自己在哪裡嗎
did you know where you were?
你要參究下去
You go on figuring it out.
喔 找到了
Oops! You got it!
原來過去我生命不生不滅
As a matter of fact, in the past
my life neither arose nor ceased.
生命是怎麼樣來的
How does life come from?
生也未曾生
One who was born has not yet been born.
死也未曾死
One who died has not yet died.
法身真如
The Dharma body and True Suchness
它天然、自然的
are natural.
在過去的參話頭還有
Another head phrase in the past includes:
如何是西來意
What's the meaning of
the Patriarch coming west?
過去佛法從西方印度
In the past the Buddha Dharma
spread from the West (India)
傳來中國東方
to China in the East.
所以我們就什麼是西來意
What's the meaning of
the Patriarch coming west?
大法從西方
The Dharma spread from the West
從印度傳到我們這裡來
or India to our place here.
什麼是西來意
What's the meaning of
the Patriarch coming west?
等於我們佛光山現在到美國去
This is like Fo Guang Shan
which went to the US
到西方建了一個寺院
to build a temple
叫西來寺
called Hsi Lai Temple.
為什麼要到美國去
Why went to the US
建一個西來寺
to build Hsi Lai Temple?
這中國這麼大這麼多的土地
China has a lot of land,
為什麼到美國去
why went to the US instead?
你怎麼在美國建一個寺廟
Why did you build a temple in the US?
要做什麼用途
What was it for?
將來怎麼樣子發展
What is its future development?
你無論追求它的過去
When you seek its past,
無論追求它的未來
its future,
是什麼樣因緣把它建起來
or try to find out under what cause
and condition it was built
是什麼樣因緣將來傳播出去
and is going to disseminate the Dharma,
所以這許多話頭
you'll end up with many head phrases.
如果我們來追究
So we should look into
一切要講究原因
the cause or reason
不要在果上計較
rather than the result.
菩薩畏因 眾生畏果
A bodhisattva fears the cause,
while a sentient being fears the result.
甚至兩個人吵架
In a quarrel between two men,
原因也很重要
what matters most is what caused it
結果那不是重要
rather than how it would end up.
