This is just a snapshot of 14 minutes in one day. Genki the gorilla at Kyoto zoo, filmed all day long every day, fed her baby Gentaro constantly, yet he still was not getting enough milk. At four days old he had to be removed and hand reared. Its weight could be appropriate for its age, it might be that they are not latching properly, or for some reason the mother is not producing enough milk, etc. maybe it’s teething and biting, hence pulling him away to teach him to not bite.

I’d like to see green leafy branches provided daily for these orangutans- it’s what they use to make their beds and forage, and even imbrellas in the wild.
When you see this interaction you feel even more for the Orphants who get ripped off their moms who got killed (to sell this precious babies in the illegal pet trade)! These babies live in a world of red hair, love, hugs kisses and suckling, never ever we can give that kind of care!!!!
Aw you can clearly see she loves her baby...I don't see why every time someone post an animal on youtube ppl have to come out in droves with pitch forks yelling animal cruelty they look perfectly fine to me and the baby seems content with his mom.
Zoretta Guillory that is absolutely NOT true...they most certainly can be and are quite aggressive when they wish to be!! It is obvious that you have never ever been around them in the real world and are basing your knowledge of them on videos on RU-vid or something similar. Not only will the babies very frequently throw tantrums and bite the shit out of you they also have nasty habit of slapping and pinching quite hard!! Adult orangutans are even more likely to harm you...they may seem laid back while you are watching them lie around while being filmed on video but the adult males can easily kill an adult human... females as well but they are more likely to bite, pinch and slap. They are quite stubborn and if are pushed to do something they don't want to they will kick someone in the ass!! Juveniles often act mean completely unprovoked...I had to laugh my ass off at your statement because nothing could be further from the truth
Zoretta Guillory Yes, you are right in general. Usually, the females will stay above humans in the trees. The most they do is drop branches down on you and/or move away. Please ignore the know it all troll here. She seems to have nothing better to do than pick on posters and spout ignorant statements which she claims to be an authority on. Yes, the males are another set of problems altogether which Julia Roberts found out on a visit to Borneo.. It took several men to get get her out of the grip of a lovelorn male who was choking her!!
Gina Powell I’m confused why you say this, yet you have a whole playlist on your RU-vid channel with videos of a monkey with various babies. That’s is insanely dangerous and just totally inappropriate. I won’t ever watch those videos because I don’t know what psycho thinks it is ok to own a primate like that and have it play with your children. It is disgusting and vile. They don’t belong wherever they are next to humans, especially babies. Actions speak louder than words.
Where have you observed them? I have watched some of this behaviour in rehabilitation centre videos, but the situation is artificial: many young orangutans are crowded together, whereas in the wild they are solitary creatures and hard to find.
It's so beautiful watching mommy and baby together. You can see the endless love she has for her new little one. The only thing that ruined it was the idiotic parents that allowed that child to scream like an ignorant animal with out him getting his ass smacked. Especially when baby is sleeping. Remember...your in their house try not being so ignorant and waking the baby up.
Aside from the fact that until the zoo 'supposedly' stepped in, she was slowly starving the baby to death by preventing it from feeding. And you don't have to be some sort of ape guru to understand that there's definitely something wrong the mother mentally and/or emotionally.

She looks young, perhaps her first child. She is very loving and caring. She is very gentle. It's a pitiful and shameful thing that they have to live like this in this shithole. This intelligent ape should be in a sanctuary where she can be free with her baby to live out her life with a little more dignity.
Given the environment she is an EXCELLENT MOTHER GEEZE.I am invariably happy when I watch these wonderful mothers, I could watch them love their little one all damn day, and smile a lot. She's in a damn zoo, if there is any starvation taking place the answer is simple as snot, its a zoo what is she supposed to do climb the trees and gather her natural orangutan food? I see as others say that there is something amiss. What I see is obsessive grooming and thats all, nothing more. I don't know how old she is but i'm sure if left in her natural environment it'd still have been a huge challenge to care for little guy. I don't know but I bet that all the newborns do not, nor have they ever, survived their first 6mo.-1year of life for reasons related to mothers care and lack of foods due to mothers inexperience. This just reminds me how endangered these awesome beings are and how uphill their battle will remain.

Right, they’re all being burnt & cut down for palm oil plantations…so the Orangutans are stuck living & breeding in zoos & rescue centers far away from where they should be!!!
Its a zoo . You can't put a forest in a zoo . A tree would be pointless. It would have to be many trees . In the wild they live in trees because that is where the food is and for safely from predators and for nesting so they can sleep safely .

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE contact IAR (International Animal Rescue) in Borneo. They will come to you, pay you for your trouble and take all liability, if you will just let this mother and baby orangutan go home. They are starving, malnourished and ill. Their diet is in the Borneo forest. They need to eat what the forest provides. They suffer if they eat the wrong things. They deserve to live as orangutans. Please don't keep them like this. Please let them go home to the Borneo rain forest. Please search your hearts and send them home. Let them live as they were meant to. If you don't want to work with the IAR, then the BOS Foundation out of Australia can get them back to Borneo. The BOS doesn't have as much funding as IAR does but they will come through for you if that is your choice. Please do the honourable thing. Sincerely, Robin Roshto

I just realized something... while everyone is focused on the mom and baby my question is WHERE are they?? Looks and sounds like that is not a legal zoo but someone's backyard and a dog house for the orangutans to live in of course I could be wrong and way off base with that assumption but its just what I see and hear that lead me to that thought
This is so cruel in my opinion. The mother and baby should have been moved to a nice quiet location and left alone. No wonder the mother experienced problems looking after the baby with so many noisy humans gawking shouting and laughing at her! Zoo's should change their ways, and give all of the animals in their care a proper life in a natural, private larger habitat!
+Mariealena Bélanger Their own environment?? Have you checked out the status lately of the orangutans own environment? They are not very likely to successfully raise a baby in "their own environment" when there are dozens of new orphans arriving at sanctuaries on a daily basis...
It’s called grooming and if you watch enough videos you’ll see they all do that. Stop trying to sexualize an orangutan baby. Now they probably removed him because he wasn’t getting fed properly.

This truelly amazing to watch. It's just mind boggling how much they are like us. I just stare in awe. So cool watching momma care for that lil baby and little baby all sprawled out feeling so safe, comfortable, and loved. Amazing. I don't see how humans could ever hurt something like this. For greed
I cannot beleive that he is still with the mom at this point that this video was made. I have never seen an infant orangutan (other than one that was extremely sickly and/or near death) that was this thin and malnourished appearing..He even looks dehydrated and for that to show up on a video like this is pretty bad..you can see where his fontanels are sunken in...his ribs are very visible and his arms and legs are painfully thin. Just from the 15 mins out of the day that encompass this video she pushes him away from her breast several times..I just am amazed that he made it at all and that they let it go for this long.
+Gina Powell I don't think the mother is being cruel...She is giving the baby love. This zoo is properly not associated with the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) which the (goal of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums is to guide, encourage and support the zoos, aquariums and like-minded organisations of the world in animal care and welfare, environmental education and global conservation.) If you look it up you'll see what I am talking about. Oh and the other thing that can be going on with mom and why she doesn't feed the baby. She could have a breast infection and they can be very painful. Once again the zoo is responsible....
Just Wondering I agree...by no means did I intend to imply the mother was being cruel to the baby..but I don't think she was allowing him to breast feed enough...and unlike many people I do not "dislike" or "hate" these animals because I think they are misbehaving or being mean...I am sure there is a reason she is not feeding him enough and again..I do not hold that against her or anything...as far as the infection goes it could be that but there are lots of reasons why this could be going on., and yes, the zoo is 100percent responsible for the welfare of these animals!! I am aware that they are not associated with WAZA it any other organizations that would help ensure proper keeping of their animals!!
