When to use 은/는 and 이/가 is one of what Korean learners find the most confusing to understand. Native Korean speakers can easily tell the difference, because we’ve grown up in this language our entire life, but we find it very difficult to explain this to non-natives. There are numerous contexts when using a language and it would be impossible to verbalize all of them, so I doubt there can be one single, clear answer to 은/는/이/가 confusion. But I do hope that the explanation and example sentences I have for you in this lesson help you inch closer to getting it. 화이팅, everyone! 💪
(If you want to skip right on to 은/는 & 이/가 comparison, you can start from 08:27 If you want to know what a particle and a subject marker is in Korean language, you're welcome to stay with me all the way from the beginning 😊)

잘 보고 있습니다. "은/는" 과 "이/가" 는 다음과 같은 개념을 설명하면 대부분의 모든 문장에 적용되리라 확신합니다. "은/는"은 안(음)을 향하는 방향성(주체)이 있습니다. 나는 집에 있다(나) 나는 너가 집에 있길 바란다(나(너--->))

My friend told me that possibly the best explanation for beginner Korean learners is: -when 이/가 is used, the important part of the sentence is before the 이/가, -when 은/는 is used, the important part of the sentence is after the 은/는. It is a complex grammar structure so learning when to use the right one by intuition may take some time because you need to practise a lot through context but still, I wish most beginner textbooks would contain an explanation like yours! It's perfect because it gives you a very good, basic understanding of what both particles do in most cases without getting you confused right off at the start. 빅키선생님 감사합니다! 잘했습니다.

Didn’t read everything 😅 but on the top you have “I am Korean”, but in Korean you wrote: “저는 한국입니다”. This means I am Korea, so you’re saying you’re the country, but you want to say you have korean nationality. So you should write it like this; “저는 한국인입니다”. The difference is that here I put “인” between “한국” and “입니다”. I hope this helped!

I just startet lerning Korean and your videos help so much!! There is just one thing that confuses me at the moment. Do you pronounce the first letter of a word (or maybe a sentence) different? When you say 나 for example it sounds more like 다. Sorry if you already said that, but I'm still learning simple phrases and pronounciation and didn't watched all your videos yet. I hope I'll be ready visiting Korea soon and I'm happy that I started learning Korean only a few month after you started this series. I hope you will read this comment. 😊 Greetings from Germany and keep going!

Yes I noticed that a lot of learners get confused by ㄴ and ㄷ sound. It's because with both ㄴ and ㄷ, we pronounce it by putting the tongue right behind the front teeth. That makes them sound similar. I just uploaded a video on pronunciation tips, hopefully it helps clear up the difference for you. And thank you sm for the encouragement! :)

I really like the video! But the “contrast” part (21:56) doesn’t make sense for me In the first example you contrast 이 / 는 And in the second it’s both 는 / 는 I don’t understand :(( Why did we use 이 in the first example? (even if your friends bully you I will be there for you) (?)
@saltpelt4339
@saltpelt4339 3 года назад
The 4th rule for knowing when to use 은/는 is when you're contrasting a meaning! So she wasn't actually contrasting 이 and 는. In the first part of the sentence "Even if your friends bully you", the reason you use the 이 subject marker is because it's a part of the sentence that indicates more information is going to come after (Rule #2 for 이/가). In the second part of the sentence, "I cheer for you", 는 is used because that statement is in /contrast/ to the previous part of the sentence. (Because you're cheering for them even if their friends don't.) Hope that helped? :)
@omgee9802
@omgee9802 3 года назад
Saltpelt can it be said the other way around? Like “I cheer for you even when your friends bully you.” Will the particles change then?
@saltpelt4339
@saltpelt4339 3 года назад
@@omgee9802 The particles would stay in the same place (이/가 before the comma and 은/는 after the comma) but they would change the words they're on, yes. "친구들*이* 널 괴롭혀도, 나*는* 널 응원해." "나*가* 널 응원해, 친구들*은* 널 괴롭혀도." 이/가 first: something related is going to come after 은/는 second: contrast in relation to something that has already been said

I have to apologise first, I don't use PC and it's lazy for me to copy paste korean texts using mobile so I'll basically use their sounds. You asked why "I" was used in the first example right? It was used because the sentence have follow-up sentence (indicating a comma). So, after the comma is used, the 2nd part of the sentence used "neun" because it is in contrast to the 1st part of the sentence. I hope that helped! I am not Korean and I just shared my understanding that I got from the video. The teacher of this channel is really, she is born naturally with a talent.

i am currently in the middle of the video and i just noticed that, when the question has "은/는", the answer would be "은/는" as well. it's the same with "이/가". 17:34 the question is "너 오늘 뭐했어?" so i thought "hm, it is 너 written here... so it should be '너'는'' it's just that 는 is being omitted here. so the answer would be '나는'." i don't know if my way of thinking is correct in this type of context, but i happened to be right with my answer. i thought also that the answer would be "내가" if the question was "네가 오늘 뭐했어?". 선생님 please tell me if my way of thinking is correct 😊

Hello, Shixunie It's extremely easy to pick the right subject marker in questions. It is based on what you are interested in knowing. If you are asking about WHO, use 이 or 가. In all other cases, such as asking about WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, HOW, and WHY, then use 은 or 는. Too simple, right? Let's look at the question, "너 오늘 뭐했어?" It's about WHAT you did today. So, the right subject marker is '는' 너는 오늘 뭐했어? or 너 오늘 뭐했어? More example sentences asking WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, HOW, and WHY. Where did you go yesterday? (너는 어제 어디에 갔니?) When (or What time) did you come back home? (너는 언제 집에 돌아 왔니?) How did you get there? (너는 어떻게 거기에 갔니?) Why did you go there? (너는 거기에 왜 갔니?) The only time you use '이' or '가' is when you ask about WHO. Did Mike make this cake? (이 케잌 마이크가 만들었니?) Who told you to bring this? (누가 이거 가지고 오라고 그랬어?) Who did the dishes? (누가 설겆이를 했어요) Let's practice! During the recess, you cleaned the blackboard while others were chitchatting. Your teacher comes in and asks "Oh, who cleaned the blackboard?" Question #1: Which one is the right sentence that is translated into Korean? a. 저는 칠판을 닦았어요. b. 제가 칠판을 닦았어요. The answer is b. Although both are translated into "I cleaned the blackboard" in English, b is the right sentence that answers the question, meaning it is ME who cleaned the blackboard. If the teacher asks what other students were doing while you are cleaning the blackboard, the question should be: 네(가) 칠판 닦는 동안, 다른 학생들(은) 뭐하고 있었니? While you were cleaning the blackboard, what were other students doing? 제가 칠판 닦는 동안, 다른 애들은 잡담하고 있었어요. While I was cleaning the blackboard, they were chit-chatting. So, when the action doer is emphasized, use 은 or 는, otherwise use 이 or 가. Bonus question!! What if the teacher asks you what you were doing while other students was chitchatting? Which one is the right question? a. 다른 학생들이 잡담하는 동안 네가 뭐하고 있었니? b. 다른 학생들이 잡담하는 동안 너는 뭐하고 있었니? The right sentence is b because the question is about WHAT, not WHO.

late reply, but yes! generally, a trick to finding out which subject markers you should use is by using the one that was used in the question. for example, “누 *가* 케이크를 먹었어요?” “Who ate the cake?” 가 was the particle used in the question, and 가 (or 이) is the particle you use to respond with. “제 *가* 케이크를 먹었어요.” “ _I_ ate the cake.” Another example, “너 *는* 오늘 뭐 했어?” “What did you do today?” 는 was the particle used in the question, and 는 (or 은) is the particle you use to respond with. “나 *는* 오늘 일했어.” “I worked today.” As for what you asked in regards to if the question was, “네가 오늘 뭐 했어?” You would in fact respond with 내가. The 가 attached to 너 emphasizes that subject, making the meaning of the question more like “What did _you_ _in_ _particular_ do today?” or “What did _you_ do today (as opposed to what others may have done)?” 가 emphasizes “you”, and as a result will emphasize “I” when you respond. “내가 쇼핑을 갔어.” “ _I_ went shopping today.” Listening out for particles used in the question can help you with knowing which one to respond with, however don’t rely on this. This is because, as you said, sometimes particles are omitted, meaning you won’t be able to tell which one to use if it wasn’t used in the question to begin with. Also, sometimes you will be faced with questions that will have multiple subject particles in, which can cause confusion for you if you’re solely depending on the ones used in the question to help with your answer. It’s best to just learn the different uses yourself!

Hey!! If anyone is not understanding 은 는 , 이 가 . I have a simple explanation. You use 은 는 when the subject is not important is the conversation. Look at the examples When is said Who is pretty? We had to state that JENNIE was pretty. But when it was asked how is Jennie We had to state that she was PRETTY Now both of them are emphasising on different things and that how you know what you have to use How let's say no one asked you. But now you have to decide what you think is more important. JENNIE is pretty Jennie is PRETTY Now in case 1 you are saying that JENNIE is the one who is pretty. In case 2 you are saying that she is not ugly. She is PRETTY you have to say who is PRETTY. Ok,? Understood? Thanks Sorry for bad engolish...
