This video tests whether or not you should mix up a diluted ratio of Regard and apply it as primer to 1/2" Hardiebacker cement backerboard. In other words, should you prime first or not? This stuff is THIRSTY! The Regard instructions suggest you should, but don't address Hardiebacker specifically. So, here's my DIY (very unscientific, but still practical) test to determine if priming with a 4:1 Regard-water ratio affects the bond, or any other noticeable differences. Hope this helps!

A big “Thank You” for showing that using Primer (4 H2O to 1 Redgard) helps adhesion to Hardie Backer Board. I’d been You Tubing to death and you provided proof. I just finished installing my 1/2 “ Hardie Board and Taping the seams. 👍

Not sure exactly - I've always bought modified. I think it's supposed to be stronger.

I just applied Redgard and it says on the instructions for waterproofing that it needs two full coats to be waterproofed, applied at right angles to each other. May use a trowel, a roller, or a brush. What am I missing with regards to needing more coats? Edit: may be applied with roller or sprayer. Apply layers at a rate of 80sq feet per gallon. So one gallon would provide 40sq of appropriate water proofing coverage. I had a 15sq foot shower pan and applied a thinner primer coat and two full coats, which would work out to what they are recommending, but the dried layer doesn’t appear 25 mils thick.

Lastly how long did you wait to redguard after priming it

I applied mine the next day after priming was good and dry.

I am a tow center of 36 years I have been using red guard products for Is 12 years I have put down 2 Coats not primed with a map roller over 3/4 inch toning groove plywood on an exterior porch and it has been down for 15 years with no sign of movement no water issues the porch is not covered this video is unrealistic you could never use that much regard on a job no one could afford it

Yes, this stuff is pricey, indeed. I went through two $50 tubs on this project. Thanks for your comment.
