The HDR performance is just good (comparing it to my TV) the brightness is actually insane as well, I was worried it would be dimmer then my IPS, and it looks like it is, until you game for 30 min and turn the head to the IPS and see how dim the IPS is. I run the monitor at 70% brightness because it’s plenty!

One of my longest used monitor is a Asus 35inch 3440x1440 ultra wide 100hz VA, use it for 6 years until the Mobo died, sell it to my electrigian friend for 15 bucks, me fix it for another 30 bucks and love it. Honestly if not for buying the 27 LG oled and recently the MSI 321UPX, I can still live with VA.

What's interesting to me is that the reflection on the glossy QD-OLED, although clear, looks so much darker than the others. This matches my experience with having a bright window behind my back. Yes, I can clearly see the trees outside but text remains perfectly readable through the reflection, something I cannot claim for matte screens used in the exact same spot.

Thank goodness people are finally saying it. Glossy is objectively better. Matte does worse with handling reflections. Anyone trashing glossy has never used glossy. I own an LG matte monitor and a glossy Apple studio display. I can actually see the Apple display with blinds open right next to me. All I see is matte haziness on the LG.

I had a 50" rear projection TV with a lenticular screen many years ago. I added a sheet of industrial-grade polythene over the screen, enhancing the sense of depth in the picture!

@@bren.r I guess it just depends on one's use case. I'm currently using a cheap-ass IPS display in a room with fairly standard daytime lighting and I have the display brightness literally set to zero on the given scale and it looks fine. So I think I'm probably closer to the target demographic.

The VRR being enabled below the refreshrate is due to LFC. (Low Framerate Compensation) Not all monitors have this but those are mainly early freesync models which are not being made or sold for years now.

Glossy and black painted walls with led lights in the corners behind the tv will give you visibility with out the glare but I eventually just turn if the lights in my case. The depth is so good.

it depends on the use case and personal preference. looking at 1:10 the matte looks less distracting with reflections if they are dimm, but I see how some people prefer the glossy with more reflections to give that depth look. I personally own both a glossy and matte OLED on my desk that I operate for multiple hours a day, and for me the matte one is slightly more preferable, although both are great on it's own and a lot of people simply exaggerate when comparing these coatings.

From all the comparisons I've seen, it looks like in bright environments, the reflections on glossy screens become quite distracting So glossy is better, but not in a bright environment

Seeing reflections in glossy screens and saying that the reflections give images depth is pure cope. No need to get OLED for pure blacks if you want to see reflections on it.

The only excuse for going matte is if the user of the display is so ugly and hideous, that a single glance at their own reflection will not just turn oneself to stone, but have that stone dissolve to ashes and scatter to the wind.

VERY IMPORTANT: I just saw that the purchase link is about the ASUS ROG ‘Swift’ OLED XG27AQDMG (cheaper) and not the new ASUS ROG ‘Strix’ OLED XG27AQDMG (glossy WOLED). Be very careful with this because I am seeing a lot of web shops cheating or getting the wrong product. It is easy for a user to miss this important detail.

You will see the near black vertical banding in helldivers 2. Alot of people are. I am moving away from WOLED to QD-OLED for this reason only. They have alot less uniformity issues.

I notice reflections less on glossy screens than I do on matte when there is actual content playing on the screen. When my eyes are focused on the tv plane any reflections are out of focus anyway as they sit at a different plane to the tv screen.

Vincent, Windows modern apps like Settings don't use subpixel antialiasing, so they're a bad example to demonstrate fuzzy text due to WRGB subpixel layout. Showing an app that uses ClearType subpixel rendering would be a better demonstration of the effects of nonstandard subpixel layouts on text rendering.

Question: In a typical daytime scenario, would a matte OLED screen have WORSE blacks than a mid-range LCD monitor? 🤔 I.e. Even if the blacks on matte OLED screens aren't as good as glossy, aren't they still miles ahead of anything LCD can produce?

if you talk about WOLED, then yes. the blacks on those are like having an LCD fully turned off. although from my experience even shut off LCDs turn out to have a brighter display than OLEDs, likely due to the panel characteristics. as long as you dont shine a super harsh light directly on your WOLED, both glossy and matte will give you inky blacks. QD-OLED is a completely different story, I'm not a fan of those despite the superior color. Never go for QD if you care about inky blacks and don't want to use it in a fully dark room, even dimm lights will raise them and add a gray/purple tint.

Also you should actually test the ULMB mode sometimes. It's not just a button that just works, we need more detail, see how it look in motion, and know about the ranges of framerates the ULMB works at. I know you're not a gamer but please at least try.

Hi, how are you? I have a problem with asus xg27aqdmg if you could guide me. First, I don't know if the nvidia app beta is the best for this monitor or do I use nvidia expirience? Second, is it advisable to use Windows HDR calibration? I used it and it worked very well with shadow of the tomb raider in hdr, but when playing tomb raider (2013) in sdr it looked horrible, very yellow, especially the skin, this could be the fault of the nvidia app beta or the configuration of windows 11 hdr? I use nvidia app beta or nvidia experience, and do I configure HDR with Windows 11 or not? thank you so much!

more important than the glossy vs matte debate is the super aggressive ABL of the QD-OLEDs, only the new Asus monitor seems to have acceptable HDR brightness for most scenarios. Hope Samsung can do something better next year OR brands could provide heatsinks.

I read a lot about it and went to the store to compare the two before my purchase. Honestly, the difference is not zero, but to me it is not worth the hassle with raised blacks in a bright room. maybe the yellow, red (gold for instance) feels slightly more saturated. Went with the LG G series due to build quality (metal heatsink/frame), menu software being better in my opinion and Dolby Vision (for movies). They are all great, so either way, have fun!

My Alienware monitor looks much more vibrant and accurate than my C2 and colours don't exist on the C2 that do on my monitor. The raised blacks aren't a big issue, I play with windows open and lights turned on. It has a huge difference in reds and yellows, and the colour depth is much better and the image looks more 3d.

@@ast534 i was actually comparing the S90C, Sony (expensive one), S95B, C3 and G2. As I said, to me it was close to zero difference, all of these are great, but I preferred the build quality of LG (own these two models above now) and the settings menu. I have an old Samsung, the menu is not bad, but preferences. Alienware is Dell and unfortunately, in my opinion, AW is thus trash (design - colour, material, form - I don't like active heatsinks because it's another point of failure)

Vincent, I have the PG and just bought the XG, side by side, even at 100% max settings, the XG is a lot dimmer! Why? I set them both exactly the same! It may be due to the panel being new on the XG?

Guys I gotta be honest. I own the PG27AQDM and bout the aw2725df because I wanted the glossy screen. But looking at the two side by side and testing in-game, the alienware's abl kind've ruins the monitor for me. It does look a bit better in very dark scenes with small highlights, but in bright scenes, the ASUS gets way brighter and looks better. All that being said, the alienware has a clear advantage in terms of clarity due to the glossy screen. It's really unfortunate that the Asus shipped with a matte coating in the first place. Guess the one I'm really looking for is this new updated Asus model, but I don't want to spend the money on that lol.

Input lag is higher than on LG TVs for 60 FPS signals... I wonder why won't they give us an option to set the refresh rate from OSD like LG does with their TVs. Not an issue for PC, of course, but for consoles... It blows.

I am very interested in this video. I purchased a Sony OLED tv and my cat had some nose prints on the screen from smelling it. I tried to wipe it with a damp cloth, it completely ruined the screen. I can't believe how easily it is damaged, Had I known I would never bought this TV. how many people have kids or pet that touch the screen. Vincent you should include in your reviews how prone some of these TV are to screen damage. That is a huge consideration with respect to ownership consideration

The matte looked better in the side by side comparisons though! This glossy preference is crazy to me, kind of like using the soap opera refresh rate to watch movies. Yuck!

I own a AW3225QF and if I shine a light on it it's not green or grey it's pink. That said I never see it. I position the screen away from any lights. Blacks always look inky.

So there was no color advantage on QD-OLED even on dark scene with neon-like lights (e.g: car red taillights)? on games like GT7, qd-oled has particularly striking colors, even if the rest of the picture brightness is rather dull

Not sure I believe it's not noticeable. This to me was more of an ad for the Asus than a panel coating shootout. If he talks about any of the pluses of the other 2 monitors vs the new Asus it wouldn't be as good of an ad would it? For example, he never talks about WOLEDs weak text rendering for example, while not perfect on a 3rd gen QD-OLEDs it is better than current WOLEDS.

@@theripper121 that makes sense, plus he tested the dimmest qd-oled panel according to rtings (i have that same alienware model) the gigabyte/msi panels are a better display of QD-OLED with higher brightness and better EOTF

@@adrianomart I have the aw2725 as well. Brightness to me in a vacuum, not sat next to another monitor, is fine in my opinion. My only major gripe with it is the handling of gamma 2.2 in creator mode. Interesting how he doesn't mention at all the superior color calibration out of the box of the Alienware either.

@@adrianomart The gigabyte and MSI panels are exactly the same as the Alienwares. The only difference are minor adjustments each manufacturer has made. Their overall brightness is basically identical.

@@theripper121 they are slightly brighter according to rtings and have better EOTF tracking on the 1000 peak mode, the alienware is rather dark, doesn't bother me all that much but yeah. yeah the lack of color comparison is weird, especially considering that it reaches rec2020 80% whereas woled is in the 70% range, know a guy who bought a asus 1440p 240hz monitor and said the brightness is good but colors are muted...

Gorilla glas armor reduces reflections A LOT without being matte, but it might be expensive and is developed by samsung electronics + corning, so will remain samsung exclusive for some time, I guess.

I’m 99 % sure it doesn’t because Asus cheaped out again with not putting a HDMI 2.1 port. I don’t know why the PS5 can’t support HDMI 2.0 VRR though.

@@Simon_Denmark 1: there is no such thing anymore as an HDMI 2.0 port. the HDMI forum rebranded HDMI 2.0 and lumped it into 2.1 2: the PS5 supports HDMI Forum VRR, and HDMI Forum VRR was already part of the HDMI 2.0b standard. some Samsung HDMI 2.0 TVs supported it, like my previous TV, which was a Samsung HDMI 2.0 TV and on which VRR worked flawlessly with my PS5 that's why it's not enough to state the version number to know if VRR is supported. while colloquially people still differentiate between 2.0 and 2.1, officially 2.0 isn't a thing anymore, and all 2.0 and 2.1 features are now just a pool of optional features a 2.1 port can have but doesn't have to have. a TV or Monitor could advertise an HDMI 2.1 port but only support 4k 60hz without VRR. it would still be HDMI 2.1
