🇨🇲 A look at Cameroon's language divide

In Cameroon, there is an English and French-speaking part of the country. The division started when the English-speaking Southern Cameroonians said they were not represented in or respected by the French-speaking government. Southern Cameroonians have been calling for independence, so they can create their own country, a place they call Ambazonia.
The government responded with a crackdown on the internet, travel, and continued raids on northwest and southwest parts of the country. It is unclear just how many people have died so far. In the last year though, the situation keeps getting worse.
Just last week, Nigeria extradited 47 Cameroonian Anglophone separatists. They have now been sent back to Cameroon, where the government has described them as "terrorists". Among them was Ayuk Tabe, the president of the interim Southern Cameroons government. Southern Cameroonians are demanding his release, and want to know if the other separatists are still alive.
Al Jazeera's Leah Harding explains.

I'm no expert but I feel this goes deeper then language, probably a differing culture and sense of nation hood after so many years of being ruled by differing European Empires.

You're right. The British indirect rule gave a lot of autonomy to local governments and chiefs..while the French ruled the majority French cameroon as a forceful colonial-terrorist form government where all powers was with the French central administration. When the Europeans left, the French state got independence in January of 1960, putting in place a puppet politician fabricated by them via rigged elections to continue the colonial exploitation of the locals. Eg..all mineral resources in the French territory was signed off to belong to Paris, who can sell to any other nation. When the British administration ended In the british territory in 1961- these were said not to be viable for as separate nation, but should Confederate with either Nigeria or French Cameroon. They chose French cameroon over Nigeria. Later when oil and other natural resources were discovered in the English(former British) part, the French imposed puppet organized a referendum to abolish the UN-organised one in 1961 and overtook the English regions. This led to systematic exploitation with marginalisation of the English peoples. Almost 60% of the GDP and foreign exchange of the nation comes from oil, cocoa and cash crops from these 2 English speaking provinces, yet they receive less than 8% of the national expenditure budget (2018 budget year). This is the sum of the problem.

European countries are to blame for this. They went into Africa, redistricting and robbing the land and forced people of different tribes to live together under one country. Who gave them the rights to do that. They had already taken millions of Hebrews as slaves. Who gave them ownership of this earth. Look at the chaos they have caused. Look at the pain and suffering. There is no where or nothing safe or sacred from them. The dead can't even rest for them digging them up and testing on them. The entire earrh is collasping due to their desire to play gods. Judgement and recompense is here and it is going to be glorious.

As a black American, I found out through Ancestry DNA that I was 38% Cameroon/ Congo/ Southern Bantu. I was planning on visiting here along with both Congolese counties and later Benin and Togo since I'm also 36% Benin/Togo. I may have to visit Benin and Togo first. I've been watching a lot of this on RU-vid. God Bless my people in Cameroon..

Hmmm Those tests can be kinda inconclusive. Lots of ethnicities (if not most of them) go past the countries barriers. Those tests might give a very very general idea about your roots but the truth is you will never know where Ur ancestors were from as most ethincities go past barriers and also coz at the time of enslaved trade there was no Cameroon,nor Togo, nor Congo. But Big ups to you trying to West Africa. Have fun and enjoy it 😎
@405boy4
@405boy4 5 лет назад
Carlos Correia Yea they base these tests a lot off of regions and those regional updates can change based off of the updates and DNA enhancements. They're also known to be very accurate. However, non will ever be 100% accurate tho.. I haven't gone yet, and after talking to more black Americans who've traced their roots to these regions, most are planning too. I was however warned to stay away from both Congolese countries( DRC and Republic of Congo). Two mixed couples who had just came back from Cameroon said they loved me but this unrest within the county is real. In fact a Cameroonian even told me to go see Benin and Togo first and let these issues play themselves out. I have other African lineage too but those were my largest percentages..

@@405boy4 I admire the fact that you want to visit your place of origin but presently Cameroon isn't the best place to visit due to the unrest. But however when things become stable you can come visit and you'll love it, the people are friendly and loving and there are nice touristic sites. I'm 100% a Cameroonian. Stay blessed
@405boy4
@405boy4 5 лет назад
mary Nanji Yes I daw that. In fact I was on another site and a Cameroonian guy told quite a few of us Black Americans that The country was dealing with a lot of problems. That's unfortunate..

Those comments about Ambazonians fighting for "white man's language" should go back to their books. The Ambazonian revolution is not about language! It is about land and economic resources which France-Cameroon wants by force!

It is more than the issue of language - it is the continue discrimination by the central government over Southern Cameroonians when it comes to power sharing, education, etc. Anyway - these two languages are lingua franca of a country that has 250 languages within it's border. In some countries unfortunately a "neutral" language often not native to the people is preferred to prevent tensions among its varies ethical groups.

IT obviously more then language but both French and English sure were masters that devoured the local culture and killed it. One element was even said in video that the French speaking side giving more favourable stuff to themselves then the English side.

The oniy solution is Southern Cameroon becoming a sovereign state that will be separated from La République du Cameroun because we have suffered a huge amount of time in the past and into the hands of Paul Bartholomew Bivondo Biya and his government we do not want to be a part of treaty with La République du Cameroun Government because UN is the costs of people's dying in this particular country called Southern Cameroon UNITED NATION'S SECRETARY GENERAL SHOULD DECLARE SOUTHERN CAMEROON FREEDOM FROM LA RÉPUBLIQUE DU CAMEROUN BECAUSE IF PAUL BARTHOLOMEW BIVONDO BIYA WAS LOOKING FOR UNITY HE WOULD HAVE NEVER DECLARE WAR ON BRITISH SOUTHERN CAMEROON PEOPLE'S.

@baronvonwolf1457

Well it's probably more then language, North and South were colonized by different empires with different cultures. They developed differently and went through different struggles. Due to this they are alienated from each other. I'm no expert but I'm willing to believe language is only part of a bigger deeper issue.

Hamza Hussein the European languages are just lingua francas. That is all.
@baronvonwolf1457
@baronvonwolf1457 6 лет назад
The problem is there are so many African languages, it's just easier to adopt the colonizer language, which they need to know anyway to attract foreign investment. Probably didn't help that the elites were from or educated in "mother country" and kept government business in the colonizers language. However this common language is probably all they had in common. Unlike in Asia and the Middle East were the continent was already dominated by a certain cultures long before the Europeans, and the America's where the natives were more or less annihilated and or assimilated, Africa was very diverse. Valuing one of hundreds of native languages might have heightened ethnic conflict. One important thing to not is it's probably not just language. Northern Cameroon was a British colony and the South was French and developed differently to a degree culturally and hence feel alienated for more reasons then just differing languages.

It should be understood we have tolerated enough from one sided Gov't of La Republique. We came into the union as equals, but it has long proven that we 've been taken for fulls if not why is it that the name we meet them with was La Republique du Cameroon while we were call Southern Cameroon. Coming together the name used now in the union is La Republique du Cameroon. Meaning that the union is no more. Who is stupid here?. It's us the Southern Cameroonians. The UN Sec General Gut ores came to Cameroun during the pick of the crisis, he meet Paul Biya in secret talks for 4 hours without any person even the Press was not allowed. He came out and took along a gift of golden statue from Biya. Since he left Cameroon, he's been quite about the issue as Paul Biya calls us terrorist, killing our people in thousands, burning down villages, more than 50 thousand of our people are refugees in Nigeria and else where. Meanwhile documents in the UN Office are showing that there were 2 Cameroons which should ever remain a Federal system but they deliberate chained it to La Republique. Yet the UN don't care to ask questions, why the change and how did it arrive to a one sided show?.

al jazeera is a fake news channel its a territorial war in ambazonia not language.ok there are 2 seperate countries southern cameroons isnt seeking independence. its already independent since 10/01/1961 and have international boundaries and anthem capital parliament cameroun got her independence on 01/01/1960 with its boundary seperate from southern cameroons cameroun used its military to invaded southern cameroons in 1961. no treaty had ever been signed by the two. its simply one cameroun have an arny and decided to invade another cameroun without an army. the solution is restoring southern cameroons independence its not seperation since none is a part of the other.

You’re too lazy to read books or you’re just a poor reporter. There’s no language devide I in cameroon. There’s a territorial violation in which case East cameroon has invaded and occupied southern cameroon, AMBAZONIA an independent state internationally recognized and with full sovereignty.

CA BO it would be better because that will give the country at a higher GDP and more resources to cell and make money for the country but that would be if Nigeria was not corrupt as f***and use the money correctly so if Nigeria cleans up the ACT sure that would be better but as long as Nigeria is corrupt as it is probably not
