🇬🇧 Brexit: Au revoir Europe? | Head to Head

In this episode of Head to Head, Mehdi Hasan challenges Norman Lamont, former British Chancellor of the Exchequer, or Finance Minister, and now Conservative peer in the House of Lords, on why he thinks the UK should leave the European Union.
Norman Lamont is a British Conservative politician backing Britain's pull-out from the EU in the June 23 membership referendum.
He served under two prime ministers, Margaret Thatcher and John Major, and as Chancellor of the Exchequer he presided over the withdrawal of the pound from the European Exchange Rate Mechanism in September 1992. He has been sitting in the House of Lords, the unelected upper house of the British parliament, as Lord Lamont of Lerwick since 1998.
As we approach this key vote amid a refugee crisis, an unravelling eurozone and Russia's challenge to European unity, we dissect with him the arguments for and against the so-called Brexit.
We explore the pros and cons for the economy, immigration and security, and the facts behind the assertion that the UK will be better off going it alone. We also discuss with him whether Britain's role in the world will be strengthened or weakened outside the European club, and ponder whether a victory for the leave camp will trigger the disintegration of the UK and the European project as we know them.

I love that Mehdi brought up one of the most contradictory points for brexiters: You're calling out all day long for the "undemocratic" EU because they are unelected, but you remain silence so far for an unelected chamber of members, that are appointed by the Queen and it's hereditary, and one of the biggest in numbers in the world (800 members, probably less than the EU chamber and that one represents 28 nations and 400 million people). And this is in the UK. And you go bragging about democracy?? Only the Swiss can do that, not the british. Please, can some brexiter explain this to me?? I'm all ears.

+Andrew Heath When the UK adopts a democratically elected upper house of parliament, and elects its MP, and future senators(?) under an electoral system which is even mildly proportional, then, and only then, can you plausibly make any claims about the lack of democracy in the EU Considering the UK's parliamentary & electoral systems, the country is a serious contender for the title of 'Least Democratic European State', along with Hungary and Byelorus..... It is definitely one of the least democratic, and least representative, in Europe.

Mehdi Hasan made this debate a confusing and frankly the worst debate I have seen so far. For example, when discussing the undemocratic nature of the EU he had a go at Lord Lemont about him being an unelected Peer. How does that even begin to discuss the issue of Europe. It was deliberately distracting and unhelpful. I used to like Hasan. After seeing this scewed debate I have gone off him.

+Robin M what you mean is, holding an establishment figure to account, in relation to each and every answer, was a bad thing. It showed, clearly how little credibility the leave side has.
@Robin-sc1lf
@Robin-sc1lf 8 лет назад
simon carter thanks for telling me what I mean, but if you want to actually hear my view then here it is.... I felt they didn't really get any heavyweight Brexiters to begin with, which was clearly a deliberate move to put the Remainians at a distinct advantage. I mean I don't even think Lord Lemont has been a well known figure in the leave camp, well I had no idea he was anyway and I like to think I am following as closely as I can. Lemont has been out of mainstream politics as a publicly recognized mp for over a decade, (yes he's a lord but we hear little about their opinions in the mainstream media etc) so not many of the millennials or those under 35 will even know who he is. If they had invited Dan Hannan or Farage or even Galloway who are extremely eloquent speakers and excellent at arguing and defending the leave perspective, then Hasan would have been so massively out of his depth. All Hasan did was quote big business leaders arguments to remain. Obviously they are going to argue to remain as they have extremely cushy deals and an easier life in the EU. His point about unelected peers in the HOL doesn't even begin to address the purely undemocratic nature of the EU and then because Lord Lemot could do nothing but embarrassly smile, that big factor in favor of leaving was glossed over. It was a shambles from start to finish with Hasan just acting like a cocky school kid with combative and pompous replies. They didn't really talk about the negative aspects of EU policy that affect everyone, thy didnt talk about TTIP, which will ultimately affect us all. They just quoted a whole load of people that frankly few of the public with know or care about their biased opinions. Not a great debate at all IMHO.
@easy1355
@easy1355 8 лет назад
+Robin M on your first point we agree, and actually, that would be a brilliant debate, him and Farage, who I personally admire... Second part, we don't. Hassan, was actually very quick in his retorts, and remember not even the leave panel were particularly coherent in their arguments. Saying that, I haven't seen one 'leave' persons who has been able to provide convincing arguments (possibly Gove) that would resonate with the public. Saying all that, that's fine with me, as I am Remain.

I'm American so which ever way this goes doesn't matter to me, but I just wanted to say I find it funny how so much of the "Stay" crowds arguments seem to revolve around this threat of economic terrorism. it seems clear that the EU benefits more from Trade then the UK does yet despite this they are willing to raise barriers up just in order to spite the UK if they leave? not only do I find this hard to believe for obvious reasons I find it to be a pathetic reason to vote to stay as well. the idea that a pathetic economic threat could sway the British vote in regards to their own freaking sovereignty is... well... lets just say if the brits did vote to stay simply outta fear then imma lose all respect for em because that's seriously cowardly.
@Robin-sc1lf

+LastGreen Our trade with the non-EU countries is growing exponentially, while trade in the EU is declining. It is a completely undemocratic system where our (UK) influence is rapidly crumbling away. They make 70% of our laws and ignore our veto even when as many as 5 other countries in the EU veto new rules/laws they go ahead anyway (as we saw with the Lisbon treaty). Now they are fast tracking Turkey to join the EU because they have struck a deal (that hasn't even been agreed in terms that Turkey have made no promises) with Turkey to hold back economic migrants and police the seas and their border better. For this we are paying them 3 billion euros a year. Turkey is a country with 90% of its land mass in Asia (very european), has a huge problem with isis and a recent poll found that 8% of Turks (thats 8% of 27 million people) openly support the ideas of ISIS. Turkeys neighbours are Iraq, Syria and Iran. It is poorer than the most poorest country currently in the EU so the UK as the 2nd biggest contributor to the EU (£350 million a week of tax payers money) we will be footing the bill for yet more bailouts and support of these poorly run nations. Not to mention the increasing nationalist counties joining making it an increasing unstable political organisation year after year. Essentially people from these nations will then have free access to the UK and the rest of Europe. This is just so dangerous I can barely begin to explain how angry it makes me feel!! So with an undemocratic organisation that is in crisis, with dwindling trade and the introduction of more nation states (many from more dangers isis filled countries) that will dilute even further the UK's influence in the EU. IT IS TIME PEOPLE WOKE UP AND USED THEIR VOTE FOR THE UK TO TAKE CHARGE OF OUR OWN AFFAIRS FROM NOW ON!

So happy about the outcome of the vote. Could write a thesis on why one should have voted stay. Only one reason to vote leave: thinking you're superior to other european countries. This arrogance will be the same reason why europeans mps will be delighted with brexit. Don't have to deal the English anymore. This also spells the end of the UK. Only a matter of time.
@dunholm1
@dunholm1 8 лет назад
If leaving is a "leap into the unknown" then so is staying in. The EU has changed beyond all recognition from the trade organisation we joined in the '70s and that process is continuing. We therefore have no idea what it will look like in, say, another 10 or 20 years. What we do know is that as poorer countries join eg Turkey, Albania and become net "takers" so the amount we pay in will rise dramatically and each of us will be poorer as a consequence. We also know that immigration will increase even further as these countries join and those now entering Germany and elsewhere get their papers. The face of Britain will be changed forever, our already-crumbling services such as schools and the NHS will be unable to cope and buying a house will become almost impossible for the average wage earner. Such a legacy is not one we should be passing on to our children and grandchildren.
@ChristopherGibbsBKK
@ChristopherGibbsBKK 8 лет назад
+dunholm1 Firstly, the EU can't let in new members without a unanimous vote from all existing member-states. So if the EU enlarges further, you'll only have our sovereign Parliament to blame. Second, all Treaty changes require a unanimous ratification from the existing member-states, and the several countries (including the UK) would have a referendum. Finally, other member-states (like those in the Eurozone) can integrate further through the "enhanced cooperation" procedure, but the UK can't be forced to participate. Basically, your fears are unfounded.
@Wizborg
@Wizborg 8 лет назад
+Christopher Gibbs You mean like the Lisbon treaty, which is just a rebranded piece of legislation that was turned down by some member states, then pushed through on the quiet.. what about places like Ireland and other places that had referendums, then we're forced to vote again because the Eu didn't like the decision, or those countries where the premiere was kicked out by the eu, and one of their people was put in place.. As Gorbachev said, the EU is trying to become what Russia got rid of..
@gloin10
@gloin10 8 лет назад
+Wizborg As an Irish person, I am happy to be able to tell you that your claim that "...Ireland and other places that had referendums, then we're forced to vote again because the Eu didn't like the decision..." is utter bollox. The Irish people voted on substantially revised documents, after national consultations about Irish people's concerns with regard to the original provisions of the documents in question. I am very happy to be a citizen of a country where EVERY change in our relationship with the EU MUST be ratified by a national referendum. If the UK ever manages to achieve that level of democratic consultation, I will be the first to congratulate you..... Actually, if the UK ever manages to advance to the level of proportional democracy enjoyed by every other European state except Hungary and Byelorus, I will be cheering ye on..... Your claim about "...those countries where the premiere was kicked out by the eu, and one of their people was put in place..." is evidence for complete constitutional ignorance where those countries are concerned. Both Greece, and Italy, have constitutional provisions for the installation of technocratic governments, in the event of a national emergency. Given what successive Greek governments, and some twenty years of Berlusconi misrule, had done to both Greece and Italy, these constitutional provisions were definitely needed.
@Wizborg
@Wizborg 8 лет назад
gloin10 So you do not remember voting on the Lisbon treaty, where the majority was a no, then shortly having to vote again, on the same piece of legislation? Every change has to be voted on, by our EU representatives, and it doesn't matter if we say no, if the rest of Europe say yes. If there is a piece of legislation that benefits mainland Europe, but detriments us, then we'd be overruled. Also, nothing has been said about Juncker and his cronies that we cannot vote out if we don't like the way they ran things, which quite frankly myself and obviously most of the Brexit campain don't. Talking about Greece, wow, two bailouts already and heading for a third, which again, we have no say over. This all sounds so democratic.. They couldn't create a United States of Europe by force, so they're doing it politically.
@ChristopherGibbsBKK
@ChristopherGibbsBKK 8 лет назад

If they decide in due course to join the single market they won't be EU members and won't have an say, and if they in some time apply to rejoin a) they's have to join the Eurozone and b) would probably face opposition to their joining from so many of the 27 countries their behaviour has alienated. Historians will judge Brexit an extraordinary act of self-harm and struggle to explain it.

All the people upset over Mehdi Hasan, let me remind you that the show is called 'Head to Head' for a reason: Hasan always takes the polar opposite view of the guest. It's not supposed to be your typical formal Oxford debate. These people walk in knowing full well that Hasan grills people harshly,. and I have nothing against Norman Lamont - he seems like a smart guy, nor do I have any opinion on Brexit nor the EU.

Other countries see us as an entry point to the EU free market? So basically they only see us from a financial point of view and not as a people, nor as an independent nation. Their desire for us to stay in only goes as far as their ability to line their own pockets. So really how much should we listen to them when their self interest is so blatant?

Here we are 3.5 years later and Britain is divided like it has never been in my life. Northern Ireland is part of Britain and so long as they want, they must say. For Britain to be separated from Europe means we would end up further under the umbrella of USA and that would be a disaster. I believe Johnson will sell out the NHS and British people will lose the advantage of affordable health care. We have an attitude closer to Europe than USA.

I fail to understand how the UK think they will have the upper hand when negotiating with the EU in the future post Brexit. It concerns me that people have voted to Leave over immigration issues and there's no evidence that this will change given that the free movement of people is one of the guarantees of being in the single market. And surely for the UK's economic future they need to be in the single market?

(14) Sorry Hugo but we had 43 years of going down the wrong path with the UNION. Tell me Hugo if you somehow walked 43 miles on a road in the wrong direction, would you continue for another 43 miles -or stop, turn around and head back to zero point and then begin your journey in the right direction? We have spent 43 years on the wrong road with the EU and its UNION. surely we can endure another 43 years heading in the wright direction. Believe me any road in the opposite direction is the right one. However, on the road we might even get a lift towards destination by like minded folks -that is the rest of the world and the Common Wealth.

+gloin10 Have you never heard of a general election? With our ELECTED government and local councillors, if we collectively disagree with their views our policies, out the way they run things, we can vote them out every five years, and get in someone that will change / reverse what the previous government has done. With an unelected bunch of bureaucrats like we have in the EU, w have no such power. It isn't just no democracy, it's effectively anti-democracy...

It makes me cringe when I hear the EU referred to as Europe. The European Union is no union at all. It is more a collection of passegers on a bus with a driver who cares nothing where any of them want to go and is taking them all to his chosen destination.
@ChristopherGibbsBKK
@ChristopherGibbsBKK 8 лет назад
+Valkyrie Sardo That's not a great analogy. It's more like a bus with 28 drivers. The EU institutions are far less powerful than the member-states, and most important EU-level decisions that effect us are made in the European Council - not the Commission.
@valkyriesardo278
@valkyriesardo278 8 лет назад
I went with one driver because the decision-makers of the EU are not elected, effectively a dictatorship.
@ChristopherGibbsBKK
@ChristopherGibbsBKK 8 лет назад
Valkyrie Sardo Actually, the European Council, which drives all decision making is made up of the 28 elected heads of the 28 democratic member-states of the Union. The European Parliament is democratically elected. The Council of Ministers is democratically elected. The only part of the EU that's not democratically elected is the Commission, but even then, the President has a manifesto, and we know in advance that whichever candidate's party gets a plurality of the vote will get the fist go at producing a Commission. Compared to every other international institution in which we pool our sovereignty, the EU is incredibly democratic.
@FireicerCooper

How ironic it is that the rich and wealthy are relying on the poor the bail them out with regards to stay in Europe !! but i must remind the country it was the rich that had their money in investments in the stock market as the poor dont have money to invest... but the poor had to bail out the banks and in return the rich !! but now they want the poor and needy to help them !! It is also amazing that their buffer for this vote has diminished in that i mean the middle class have got even smaller and closer to the poor !! the rich are the corporate companies as they own shares in them or actually own them are praying.... REMEMBER WHAT THE TORIES DID TO THE POOR AND FOR THE RICH !! IF YOU WANT TO KICK THEM IN THE BALLS VOTE OUT !! There are more reason for leaving then staying !! as the points the put are all lies and projections !! If we stay in will will still lose the finance sector in Europe fact !! if we leave we have more chance of keeping it as Paris and Berlin want it !! and we have experience in the years we have been in that if they want they usually get ! this better in the and make change is laughable you need to know how the votes are counted and given to understand we have no vote !! ie italy has 10 votes to our 1 !! this is fact there is no democracy in Europe !! Lies to say we have power over our laws and they are not made in EU !! 75% of laws factual !! they are making a untied states of Europe fact !! this Norway and switzerland thing makes me laugh and shows how desperate the in team are !! we are GREAT BRITAIN the 5th largest economy in the world.... EU IS FINISHED FRANCE GERMANY HOLLAND SPAIN ITALY GREECE ALL WANT OUT !! WHEN WE LEAVE THEY WILL ALL LEAVE !! BUT THEY WILL WANT TO TRADE WITH US !!
