Grits are a CORN porridge (as opposed to oatmeal which is an oat porridge, or cream of wheat which i believe is wheat porridge). That's probably the best way to think of it. Grits are just a boiled corn meal. So they typically blend in some cheese and spices and bacon into it to make it very savory. To make it great you make a real savory meal out of it and you make cheesy bacony grits and put grilled or pan seared shrimp on top of it and you get the southern classic Shrimp and Grits.

It's inches away from polenta (which is just the same thing made out of a different kind of corn, so the texture is a tiny bit different). I'd think there's a pretty good chance they'd have had that.

@MizGator
@MizGator Год назад
@@grumblesa10 if you don’t like the texture than it make sense that you wouldn’t like them in any form. Grits taste like whatever the chef/cook wants them to taste like. I think when ppl assume they don’t like grits it’s because they think it tastes nasty, but grits have no flavor until the person cooking it gives them flavor. Its just ground corn/cornmeal. Instead of it being sweetened and baked into cornbread it’s savory and boiled into a porridge.

I think the closest thing a European would have eaten that is similar to our grits is polenta. But they are really different from each other because of the types of corn used. Grits are one of those dishes that we learned how to make from the Native Americans and it's mostly in the south and Texas. I'm VERY glad that y'all enjoyed them.
@christianoliver3572
@christianoliver3572 2 года назад
@Happy New Year 🇺🇸 I completely forget about farina. My grandfather loved that stuff!! Personally I prefer oatmeal, especially one particular brand that comes from Ireland if I'm going to have a porridge. I looked grits up on Wikipedia and apparently grits are a type of porridge but I would not classify it is as porridge. I've never heard it called that here in Texas. I do love cheesy grits like they ate but only for lunch or dinner. For breakfast I cook (NEVER INSTANT!!!) grits with a bit of the bacon drippings then put butter, salt and pepper which I think is pretty standard. Grits take on the flavor of what they're cooked with so they be be the most bland thing you'll ever eat or the most flavorful thing you'll ever eat. One thing they're missing out on is southern greens!! A good bowl of collards, mustard and turnip greens will definitely cure what ails you especially if you ask for a mug of the pot liquor!!
@NicoleWilliams-pk9jr
@NicoleWilliams-pk9jr 2 года назад
Grits though really is a parallel to oatmeal. The Scots and the Ulster settlers world really did, in terms of food and drink revolve around wheat, oats and barley, and coming to America many things were adapted to corn.

What we call "white bread" is there to soak up the grease. Most people don't eat it lol. White bread is the cheap stuff. The original Nashville Hot chicken was started by Prince's Hot Chicken. His girlfriend made hit chicken extra extra hot as revenge, he loved it so much he started his own brand. Grits are polenta basically but less ground. Most southern cuisine's origins are foods that only the poor could afford. loved your take on the experience.

I've lived in the US my whole life, and didn't know that about the bread! I also would have made a sandwich. Also, never had grits, didn't even know how to eat them... butter? Syrup? Is it oatmeal, or more like mashed potatoes! LOL! Funny how only a few hours away, those things are far more foreign to me than English "Fish and Chips" are. You will always find Deep fried fish and Fries (chips) on a menu around here, but never grits, or chicken with waffles, which sounds so gross to me. I don't like mixing salty with syrupy, like honey glazed ham. Ew. Gotta love our variety of life we have in America though! Wish I could travel more and experience more new and unusual things in my own country, as these two have. I've travelled a lot, and usually by car, from FL to CA and everywhere in between. But regrettably, didn't try many super local things (other than boiled peanuts in Alabama, which were revolting). I think my reasoning always has been, I'm travelling, do I really want to risk trying something that may not agree with me, or give me the runs the next day and ruin my trip? So normally, the answer has been no. But hopefully in the future I can have more flexibility to try more regional food that we don't have around here!

When you avoid the half empty bottles of ketchup in favor of the full ones, be aware that most restaurants require the wait staff to top off the bottles to keep them full. That means that sometimes the bottom of the ketchup is very old indeed! A full bottle once exploded at a friend's table. He wasn't hurt, but ketchup was everywhere !

My son and I visited Nashville in October, primarily to attend the Rolling Stones concert there. The day after the show, at my son's request, we took the trolley tour and had lunch at Hattie B's. I had the hot chicken sandwich. I enjoyed it as I'm a bit of a pepper head. My son ordered the chicken tenders, opting for mild. They were so large he could only eat two of the three, so I ate the third one. Dang, that mild tender was sooooo good! I liked it better than the hot sandwich. Next time I'm in Nashville, I know what I'll be ordering.

I actually make what we call "grit-flavored cheese"....slow-cooked (several hours) grits with Irish butter (more fat, more salt than American butter), 3-7 year old cheddar, Philly cream cheese (for smoothness), and usually two other cheese varieties. Adding shrimp, garlic, and Gorgonzola cheese to take it up a notch or three for more flavor and expense. A bowl of this will cost $20-30 to make but it's almost rich enough for a main course.

Grits are made from ground hominy which is a variety of corn. It has a relatively hard kernel that is usually removed using a chemical process. Grits by themselves don't really have any particular flavor. The flavor comes from whatever you put in it. In the south (USA) it's a traditional breakfast food side dish. My favorite way to eat grits is with butter and fresh ground black pepper as a side dish with my eggs and bacon. Hominy is used extensively in Mexican dishes such as menudo, etc.

The honey is for biscuts. Pop a hot biscut open, throw a slice of butter on it and some honey or sorghum on it. (sorghum is more of an aqired taste).

I make grits at least once a week, plain, then add butter, salt, pepper, broken bacon, to eggs over easy and sometimes cheese, then mix it all together. No better breakfast for cold or lazy mornings!!

Great video! Heat levels on chicken dishes are always hard to gauge just by looking at a menu. I just had a thought for a merch item....put "Thricely!" in a nice font and it can go on all manner of things.

Other comments are correct and grits is a corn product. They are not intended to be eaten plain and are basically a vehicle for other flavors. In addition to the savory suggestions in the other comments grits are good with butter, sugar, and milk.

2 ways I like GRITS, #1 sweet. With sugar, butter. OR #2 savory . With butter, bacon bits, salt, black pepper. Can also add cheese. CAN FLAVOR IT TO FIT YOUR TASTE. Try different additives.

Y’all, a starving dog wouldn’t eat “plain” grits. You have to put lots of butter, salt, and pepper on them - that makes them delicious.

Grits are just ground corn, white or yellow and the best grits are made from a certain type of corn which I cannot remember the name right now. Made with milk and a little water is much better than just water. Cheesy bacon grits are the bomb!

With a proviso that I am a Nashvillian who does not like hot chicken, it is generally agreed that Prince’s Hot Chicken is Nashville’s best. Personally, I prefer regular fried chicken and don’t want it spicy. Add as some people have pointed out here, grits are made from hominy, which is corn that has been treated with an alkali. I like grits OK, but better either with cheese or in combination with shrimp (literally, shrimp and grits).

Soak corn kernels in water. They will swell, split the outer skin, which you remove. The swollen kernels are hominy. Dry and grind the hominy into grits. Slop the hogs with the corn skins.

Make your grits toast next level by putting a bit of runny egg on top. That’s how we do it in the south!

Grits are one of those things, either you know how to make them or you don't. It's easy to get the consistency wrong, and they need lots of salt and real butter to make them delicious. Cheese is good too. Also some crushed stewed tomatoes over grits with fresh bacon crumbled on top is really good.

Grits is made from a corn derivative called hominy. Grits are ground up hominy that can be ground in different groundings like medium, thick , fine etc , sort of like sugar and polenta. Most people eat instant grits which only take about 15 minutes or so to cook. Instant grits are typically sold in the cereal aisle of supermarkets and is on the shelves with oatmeal. Some people eat grits with a pat of butter and a sprinkle of sugar, sugar substitute, honey, berries , etc. Grits can be eaten as part of a large breakfast or with just a piece of toast, bacon, ham bacon 🥓 or just by themselves They can be eaten for breakfast, lunch or dinner, if eaten for the latter two mean, a popular paring is shrimp 🦐🍤 and grits but other savory topping can be added. I've eaten grits a few times in my life, but in truth, they are hit or miss with me since they weren't a constant growing up. Oatmeal and Cream of Wheat we're more often eaten than grits. Non instant grits can take up to 40 minutes to cook
