Tram 006 is a 71-623 model built in 2014 by UKVZ - Ust Katov Carriage Works - in Russia. With the exception of a handful of Tatra T3s, the whole tram fleet of Daugavpils is operated by UKVZ models. Daugavpils is the only city in the European Union that operates Russian built trams.
My main goal of this visit was to see and ride on the older KTM-5 trams. Unfortunately, due to track replacement works in the city, 2 routes were out of action meaning the KTMs were parked in the depot out of service. Undeterred, I rode on other Russian UKVZ built trams in operation.
I head to the tram depot on Butļerova iela in the north east of the city and watch the steady flow of trams arrive and depart. From here I take tram 006 that operates line 1 to Daugavpils railway station (Stacija). My plan was to ride the full route but something caught my eye and I ended the journey prematurely at Daugavpils University.
